Fourth Sunday in Easter

Reading I

Acts 2: 14a, 36-41

God has made Jesus both Lord and Christ.

Reflection: St. Luke describes how the

early believers recognized both the

humanity and divinity of Jesus. The

community knows that to be baptized into

Christ Jesus means living in forgiveness

that reveals the Spirit is among us. Do my

actions of mercy and compassion reveal

what I believe and know?

Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd;

there is nothing I shall want.

Reading II

1 Peter 2: 20b-25

You have returned to the shepherd

and guardian of your souls.

Reflection: Encountering the Risen Christ

provides true meaning to the mystery of

suffering. The Cross of Christ frees us

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT: The very heart of St. Matthew the Apostle Catholic Church is Jesus Christ present on the

altar. Our mission, born at that altar, is to be sent forth into our neighborhood in order to

build up the Kingdom of God. The labor of this effort must address in deed more than in

word the needs of our people.

from sins, heals us from past hurts, and

unites us back with our God. Today, the

mystery of our world’s suffering places us

deeper in confusion or draws us closer to

God. Does my suffering unite me closer to

Jesus in the redemption of our world?

Gospel

John 10: 1-10

I am the gate for the sheep.

Reflection: John’s Gospel is known as the

Good Shepherd readings. The gatekeeper

opens the way for those to follow their

Shepherd. Jesus invites his followers into

an abundance of life. Does my relationship

with Jesus offer safety and freedom,

nourishment and protection, and a step

closer to the source of all life and

goodness?

Anima Christi

Soul of Christ, sanctify me.

Body of Christ, save me.

Blood of Christ, inebriate me.

Water from the side of Christ, wash me.

Passion of Christ, strengthen me.

O good Jesus, hear me.

Within your wounds, hide me.

Permit me not to be separated from you.

From the wicked enemy defend me.

At the hour of my death call me,

bid me come to your side, that with your

saints I may praise you forever and ever.

PASTOR’S CORNER

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Jesus Christ is risen! He is risen indeed!

Our Easter Season continues with Good

Shepherd Sunday. We hear a promise from

the Good Shepherd to those who listen to

His voice. We are living in unusual and

uncertain times. But we focus to hear the

voice of our Lord who leads and guides us

in life.

Our six confirmation students continue to be

voices of hope. They planned to be ready

for confirmation on this Tuesday. The Holy

Spirit fills their minds and hearts as they

choose to follow Jesus. Their voices have

become words of encouragement and

invitations to follow Jesus. Their decisions

reveal how to grow in discipleship by acting

like Jesus. We are grateful for their gifts of

faith, and look forward to celebrating the

sacrament of Confirmation with them.

We also hear voices of caution, as both Pope

Francis and Archbishop Carlson reflect on

the well-being of mind, body and spirit of

their flock. They encourage us to be

prayerful and to be patient. During this

month of May, they ask us to look to Mary

as our model and for intercession. As we

pray the rosary, we look, listen and discover

the Good Shepherd is with us here and now,

gently calling each of us by name to follow.

Jesus Christ is risen! He is risen indeed!

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

PARISH NEWS

Month of May

Pope Francis addressed

the faithful of the world:

“I want to encourage everyone to

rediscover the beauty of praying the

Rosary at home in the month of May.

This can be done either as a group or

individually. The key to doing this is

always simplicity, and it is easy also

on the internet to find good models

of prayer to follow.”

The Spiritual Life and Worship

Commission will host recitation of

the Rosary on Sundays during May

starting at 9am.

Confirmation Class 2020

Sunday, May 3, 2020

All powerful God, by water and the Holy Spirit you freed your

children from sin and gave them new life. Send your Holy Spirit upon

them to be their Helper and Guide. Give them the spirit of wisdom

and understanding, the spirt of right judgment and courage, the spirit

of knowledge and reverence. Fill them with the spirit of wonder and

awe in your presence. - from The Rite of Confirmation

The Sacrament of Confirmation marks a believer as totally belonging to

Christ. Growth in maturity and decision-making is done in faith. The

ritual calls on the gifts of the Holy Spirit to help integrate one’s

experience of God into all the choices in life. A new name marks the

intentional choice to follow as a disciple in the way of Jesus.

Our community has six members prepared to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.

They are: Brennan Anderson, Hollye Ann Brinkley, Dionne Baloney, Anthony

Holmes, Jr., Carl “C.J.” Summers, Jr. and Jadon Trice. The scheduled ceremony on

Tuesday, May 5th is postponed. When it is safe for us to gather, we will celebrate this

rite with them.

Our students share in their own words, their experience of the grace of Confirmation.

Listen and recognize how we are a blessed community, for the Spirit dwells among us:

Prayer and structure in my life give me time everyday to meditate

and thank God for the situation He has put me in. Brennan

Give grace, be forgiving in all that you do, and don’t hold grudges. Give thanks

for all God has given us and for the love he shelters us. Hollye Ann

Discipleship is hard, but I can try to be the best person that I can be,

from the time I wake up until I go to bed. Dionne

I can make sure that I am around people who follow

God’s word and live a Christian life. Anthony

I have to stay on track, helping others when they are struggling, following

expectations and just trying to be a teen in today’s world. CJ

I can be loving, caring, forgiving, thoughtful,

responsible, and have faith. Jadon Are not our hearts burning within us, as they speak to us along the way!

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia
