Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Matthew Parish,

Thank you to all the staff and parishioners who have been so generous with time and talent in preparing this weekend’s Installation Mass and reception.

And thanks to you all for making special effort to participate in the festivities on this of all Sundays, the one when we “spring forward.” It’s ironic that God would arrange for my installation on what is well known to be my least favorite day of the year! I’ve mentioned before how much I love to sleep, and adjusting my sleep schedule to get up an hour earlier on this Sunday each year is really hard for me personally. So I’m all the more grateful for those who make special effort to be here on time for the specially scheduled Mass. Maybe you can look at it this way: You’re not losing an hour, you’re gaining a pastor!

A central part of the Rite of Installation is the new pastor’s renewal of the promises he made at ordination. With that in mind, I think it was providential that on Ash Wednesday this “Examination of Conscience before Renewing One’s Priestly Commitment” fell out of my Lenten volume of the Breviary as I was taking it off the bookshelf. Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Matthew Parish, (cont’d) While I am certain that we all have many questions during this time of transition, I do not hesitate to admit that I do not have the answers. For now I think it’s more important that these are the questions I have been asking myself daily in preparing to renew my priestly commitment during the Rite of Installation. Still more, I believe they are the first questions I need to be answering all throughout my time as pastor of Saint Matthew’s, long before I can ever begin finding the answer to all the other pastoral questions we have ahead of us. Thank you for your prayers as you read this examination of conscience and learn a little bit more about me by the questions I will be asking myself throughout my years as your pastor. “Examination of Conscience before Renewing

One’s Priestly Commitment”

Have I been diligent in devoting time arid energy to preaching the Gospel? Have I been reverent in offering the holy sacrifice of the Mass?

Have I devoted myself to the Word of God?

Am I faithful in going to confession frequently?

Is my love of God evident in my conversations and actions?

Am I faithful to praying the Breviary (Liturgy of the Hours)?

Do I live in a recollected manner?

Am I faithful to daily private prayer?

Have I been compassionate and merciful in the confessional?

Have I shown pastoral charity to those seeking counsel?

Am I generous with my time?

Have I been present and generous to the hospitalized, the elderly, the imprisoned, and the homebound?

Have I taken the initiative in the religious education of children?

Am I generous in showing special concern for the poor?

Have I cultivated deeper love of the Blessed Virgin Mary?

Am I obedient to my bishop?

Do I live with missionary zeal?

Am I faithful to Church teaching and Tradition?

Do I witness to the Gospel through a modest lifestyle?

Do I make time for spiritual reading and theological study?

Is commitment to holiness the chief priority behind my pastoral planning?

Is my life one of loving, self-sacrificing service?

Do I welcome the cross in my life and devote myself to Gospel penance?

Have I applied myself to ongoing priestly formation?

Have I made time this past year for a retreat?

Have I been a good listener to those in need?

Have I been open, patient kind, friendly, caring, and loving to God's people?

Am I committed to giving a good example to others as another Christ?

Do I stoop to “wash the feet” of others?

Do I live in intimate friendship with Jesus?

Do I live the grace and gift of ministry with a sense of unending thanksgiving?

Am I devoted to becoming more like Jesus Christ in every way?

Have I lived up to the title "Father"?

Have I made visible the love of the heart of Jesus to all those I meet? Msgr. John Talesfore, Pastor

Third Sunday of Lent The Ten Commandments are our

moral code given directly to us from God. Our Catholic beliefs, morals and practices often come under attack from the secular society, but these clearly written morals are the anchor on which much of our behavior should be based.

In fact, according to the noted author and philosopher C. S. Lewis, "There is a universal morality among all humankind. These principals rep-resented in the Ten Commandments are implanted in the hearts and minds of all women and men." That would seem to make it simple, but as we all know, nothing is ever simple.

Nevertheless, during our Lenten preparations for Easter, it is an excel-lent time to evaluate how we are

doing in relation to these basic Com-mandments from God. Our sense of stewardship tells us that we are in need of God's guidance and instruc-tions. Too often in our society we seem to rely upon what our "personal" feelings may be in rela-tion to morals and how we live them out. When questioned about the Com-mandments, Jesus responded that the two most important were to "love the Lord your God with all of your soul, and with all of you r mind," as well as "love your neighbor as yourself." Our problem may be that we do not even fulfill those two Command-ments, let alone the Ten Command-ments. That should be our goal al-ways, not just during Lent.
