NEWSPAPER RECYCLINGThank you to all those who recycle their newspapers in the skip on the playing field. This is an important source of income for the playing field. I have just sent off a bill for just under £300 to Parry & Evans for the wastepaper taken away. Could I encourage all parishioners to recycle their newspapers through this community facility.

Marden News and Views – July 2014

JULY & AUGUST IN THE GARDENAs we enter the second half of the year all our crops should either be being enjoyed, or improving in size and flavour for later. If you have a pond you will need to keep it free from algae and thin any thick weed, pumps need cleaning regularly, the whole system will be improved by doing this.Lawns will need regular mowing and maybe a weed and feed treatment, you do this between two mowings and do not put the mowings on the garden or compost as you will have residue in the grass and this can kill plants. Feed baskets and tubs weekly, put it in the water, also dead head. If holidays are imminent make sure that you have someone to water these while you are away, also make arrangements for house plants.Keep nipping the side shoots from tomatoes to stop them going bushy and shading the fruit and stop ripening. Water regularly and this will also stop blossom end rot, make sure that plants are tied to canes to keep upright. It is the time of year when Blackspot and mildew attacks our roses, they also get red spider, you will find these on the backs of leaves. Look at leaves that are going yellow down the veins it is the spider sucking the goodness out. You can buy treatments for both of these. Take dead heads off regularly.Kidney beans will undoubtedly need a few twists up the canes, remember anti clockwise! I also suggested earlier that a drench of lime to the roots may help beans set, this lime is available at garden centres. Broad beans will almost be finishing in July, unless you have some late ones. If you cut them leaving the roots in soil they will put nitrogen in as well. The same goes for kidney beans. Early and mid season potatoes will most likely be lifted, and the soil will be enriched from the potato crop ready to plant maybe carrots and beet roots for salad use while very small, they are tasty. Salad crops can also go in there as well, of course you may want to prepare this area for winter and spring greens such as sprouts, purple sprouting and cauliflower etc, you can keep planting salad crops of your choice as long as the weather is good.Sweet peas may be slowing up now but the more you pick, the more they produce. Perhaps they will get mildew on the leaves but this won't harm, as it is usually a hot weather problem.Soft wood cuttings can be taken now. Cut young growth about three inches long, cut it clean under a joint, take the lower leaves off just leaving the top ones and put into some gritty compost straightaway before they dry out, keep them in humid atmosphere if possible by covering with polythene, do not over water. This is the time of year that pests and disease get about, aphids on almost anything, thrips on gladioli, red spider, lily beetle and of course the dreaded vine weevil. There are also yellow and brown rusts mainly on hollyhocks and fox gloves but they do get elsewhere. For all of these you find treatments at garden centres. Of course we have biological controls for some pests but they have to be used very, very carefully. I am not able to go into that here. I have forgotten to mention our friends, slugs and snails, control these as you wish. I did mention copper spray last month. House cyclamen can now be tidied up, take all the old foliage off, take from the pot and tease the roots out, these can be trimmed up. Re-pot in fresh compost and give a little water to get them going but don't over do it, they should be ready to flower again in autumn.Keep hoeing and tidying borders and a feed of 7.7.7 will help. t will soon be time to plant bulbs as well. Where has the year gone? I have put two months together this time as it is just keep at it time of the year. Good luck. Peter Mann

Marden Village Trusts Committee - Marden Play Area Project

The play equipment at Marden Playing Fields is now approaching 20 years of age and it is becoming increasingly necessary to carry out expensive maintenance.Marden Village Trusts Committee has taken on the task of providing a new play area and we hope to start this work later this summer.New equipment is really expensive and we can currently fund a replacement climbing frame and a new set of swings. In addition to providing new equipment we also want to make the play area safer and more accessible by installing access pathways, safer surfacing and timber fencing. We are hopeful of raising more funding through grant applications and this will allow us to install further equipment for the children to enjoy. To help stretch our budget even further we are proposing to undertake some of the simpler building tasks ourselves. We would be delighted to hear from any local Contractors or Volunteers who could help us take down the old equipment, erect fencing and excavate to form pathways. If you are able to offer any help please get in touch.

S&A Open Farm Sunday EventThis was the second year that S&A have participated in the LEAF “Open Farm Sunday” event and it was an even bigger success than last year. The number of visitors through our gate was slightly higher than the 2013 event and the noticeable difference was that people stayed on the farm longer, enjoying looking around, chatting to our employees and tasting strawberries! We had a bouncy castle this year for the children which parents were using as a kind of ‘crèche’, leaving the children to enjoy themselves whilst being supervised by S&A staff, whilst they had a tour around Brook Farm, learning all about our operations – “Meet The Grower” talks were freely available where our growers were on hand to explain all about how we grow our strawberries; there were tours of our packhouse and new for this year’s event was a strawberry tasting panel where visitors were able to taste different varieties of strawberries and give scores and their opinions of each one, which was very popular. The proceeds from our strawberry themed refreshment stall were split between LEAF and S&A’s chosen charity for the day of the Alzheimer’s Society. We received extremely positive feedback in relation to the tidiness of the site, the organisation and professionalism of our operations and the friendly, helpful manner of the staff. Thank you to those residents of Marden village who attended the event.

NEWS FROM S&A

THANK YOUWe would like to thank Carol and Stan Rawlings for providing us with plants for our tubs at the Mini Market and at the School. It's very much appreciated.

Liz Bryon & Pat Whitcombe

Christian Aid 2014 Again such an encouraging response from all those who so generously gave to this year’s Christina Aid Week. Over 300 envelops were collected by our ever loyal collectors and over 50 completed forms were sent off for gift aid funding. Our grand total this year amounted to £1427.78 (up on last year). Perhaps in some small way this reflects the feelings of so many who so appreciate the quality of life we have in our village compared with so many less fortunate in our global village.THANK YOU ALL so much who made our wonderful collection possible.

Marden News and Views – July 2014

Village Club NewsMARDEN GARDENERS’ ASSOCIATIONOur garden visit to Stockton Bury Gardens at Kimbolton on Wednesday 11 th June 2014 was wonderful. The gardens were laid out in a series of ‘rooms’ each with its own character but I thought that the best by far was the ‘dingle’. This featured a superb water garden, beautifully laid out and full of colour. Everywhere were plants that we had not seen before and all in glorious profusion. To cap it all the weather was very good and the cafe/restaurant excellent. In fact Les and I will be going back to sample one of their lunch meals. This garden is well worth a visit, is open Wednesday to Sunday, and is only just north of Leominster. The OrchardsOn Wednesday 16th July 2014 we will be visiting ‘The Orchards’ at Bishops Frome, Worcester. The garden includes a Japanese tea-house and a Mediterranean area as well as 16 water features and a large bird aviary. We will be car sharing and plan to meet at Marden School car park at 1.00pm. Cost is £3.00 entry plus £2.50 for tea/coffee and homemade cake. Anyone interested in joining the tour should contact Len Day on 01432 880657.Westonbury Mill Water Gardens. This visit has been arranged for Wednesday 13th August 2014. Situated between Pembridge and Kington this garden has many splendid features, buildings, dingles and dells with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. Cost is £5.00 for entry with refreshments extra. A big part of our outings is always the coffee and cakes. Car sharing as above, meeting at 1.00pm in the school car park.

The above garden visits are open anyone who wants to come along and have a very enjoyable and relaxing afternoon but please contact Len Day as we often have to provide an estimate of numbers.

We are in touch with the son of Patrick John Breen (RAFVR), WW2, whose name appears on the Marden Memorial, but is buried in Poona, (India).Mr Andy Taylor, who appeared on BBC Midlands Today, is planning to explore all the War Memorials in Herefordshire as part of his history of the Herefordshire Regiment and to add to the WW1 commemoration. The society is in contact with Andy and looks forward to obtaining more information.

Herefordshire Councillor’s ReportBlack Bins – Alternate weekly bin collections from November 2014Alternate weekly bin collections mean that recycling will be collected one week and general rubbish will be collected on the other week. Every household in Herefordshire will receive an information leaflet & for further details look up www.herefordshire.gov.uk home page “Alternate weekly bin collections”. Please note that the Council will start deliveries of wheeled bins for these collections from August 2014.New Cabinet Member AppointmentThe Leader of Herefordshire Council has announced a new Cabinet appointment. From 1st June Councillor Paul Rone will join Herefordshire Council’s Cabinet as Cabinet Member for transport and roads with responsibility for transport operations; Streetscene design, policy and delivery; traffic management; car parking policy and services and highways maintenance. For more information on highways and grass cutting look up: newsroom.herefordshire.gov.ukIndividual Electoral RegistrationThere is to be a change in how people are required to register to vote in all elections. Due to electoral fraud in the past the Government has decided to rethink the way in which voters are required to register to vote. At present, one person in every household is responsible for registering everyone else who lives at that address. The Government is proposing that, from Summer 2014 each person will be required to register to vote individually, rather than by household. Identifying Information will be required e.g. date of birth & national insurance number which will need to be verified before you are added to the register. Anyone unable to supply this information would be able to provide an alternative form of evidence of their identity. It is expected that the general election in 2015 will not be affected with regard to registration, however it is better to be prepared rather than not to be considered eligible to vote. For further more detailed information look up www.gov.uk on this matter.Contacting Herefordshire CouncilHow people contact Customer Services is changing because of the following:1) There is more of a demand for 24 hour internet services.2) The service has been reduced by 25% in staffing since April 2013 as part of the budget reduction plan to allocate resources to essential services.3) To reduce customer waiting and response times, and to make sure queries are directed to the right place to be answeredThis means that priority will be given to people who have no other choice but make contact in person and via the phone, with all other queries through the web.Contact by Phone – Customer Services general enquiries 01432 260500Visit – The Hereford Centre at Franklin House Monday to Wednesday 10 am to 4.15pm Thursday 10 am to 4 pm Friday 10 am to 4.15 pm Sat & Sun ClosedThe best way to contact the Council when reporting a pothole or making an enquiry is to use e-reporting rather than the general info. or streets email. The Wildside of MardenOn Sunday 25th May the Christian church celebrated Rogation Sunday. In years gone by the whole congregation led by the churchwarden walked the church parish boundaries like a great pageant. It must have taken them all day in the countryside as our parish of Marden stretches around bordering Wellington, Sutton, Preston Wynne and Bodenham which is approximately 15 miles. However, on my walk I had to stick to the rights of way, farm tracks and highways. Sometimes I would be over the boundary, as was the case at Bodenham, and at other times well within it as the River Lugg runs along the border. From the Vern to Laystones there is no right way by the riverside so I had to walk some of it on the back road between Marden and Bodenham. On this road I met a rabbit just sitting there on the road, I went up to him thinking that he may have myxamatosis, which I have seen in other rabbits in the area. I touched him with my walking stick and he woke up from his doze and shot up the bank into a hole, as bright as anything. As the council are not going to cut our verges it was good to see masses of white flowering hedge (cow) parsley in full bloom. The wild flowers are amazing this year, elder flowers on the bushes, red Spanish and white English candle flowers on the horse chestnuts trees, red and white campions flowers in the hedgerows and fields of yellow buttercups. Up behind Franklins there is a meadow full of flowers and lovely ox eyed daisies. The views up on the bank there looked across to Marden, one way and Sutton the other and as the rain had ceased I stopped a moment to eat my roll and have a drink of water and listen to the bees busy among the flowers. In the Lugg meadows I saw a beautiful dark blue damsel fly that I identified as a male Demoiselle and I have seen several since. On the bird side the little owl at Hawkersland is still making his presence felt, as is the cuckoo who I noticed on my walk was quiet until after 4 in the afternoon and is more prominent around the Vauld area. The wrens were popping in and out of the hedgerows as were finches and tits. However, I was so excited while on my walk to see my favourite bird and one I used to see regularly on the Isles of Scilly or on the Welsh coasts and that is a pair of Oyster Catchers as they flew over the River Lugg on to Manor Court Farm’s potato fields then took off again over my head back to the lakes burbling their shrilling cry as they went. We may have had rain this last May but it has given nature a chance to grow. June continued with the rain but as the month has progressed the sun has come out. The cuckoo has definitely changed his tune and the hedge parsley has gone to seed and the hog weed is in full bloom. A swallow has made a new nest under our porch roof and most of the fledglings are flying around enjoying life. Roll on summer.
