The theme of the week is ROLE MODELS and our poem of the week is ‘Premonitions’ by

Carol Ann Duffy (1955 -). Dedicated with love to the memory of UA Fanthorpe We first met when your last breath

cooled in my palm like an egg;

you dead, and a thrush outside

sang it was morning.

I backed out of the room, feeling

the flowers freshen and shine in my arms.

The night before, we met again, to unsay

unbearable farewells, to see

our eyes brighten with re-strung tears.

O I had my sudden wish -

though I barely knew you -

to stand at the door of your house,

feeling my heartbeat calm,

as they carried you in, home, home and healing.

Then slow weeks, removing the wheelchair, the drugs,

the oxygen mask and tank, the commode,

the appointment cards,

until it was summer again

and I saw you open the doors to the gift of your garden.

Strange and beautiful to see

the roses close to their own premonitions,

the grass sweeten and cool and green

where a blackbird eased a worm into the lawn.

There you were,

a glass of lemony wine in each hand,

walking towards me always, your magnolia tree

marrying itself to the May air.

St Marylebone are taking part in Sainsbury’s Active Kids 2015 again this year

to collect for an exciting range of equipment and experiences and help

children to eat well, move well and live well.

In 2014, we collected 12 411 Active Kids vouchers.

This year we’re hoping to collect 18 000. Together we can make this happen.

Active Kids vouchers can be collected from 28 January until 5 May

at all Sainsbury’s stores, petrol stations and when ordering

groceries online.

Most importantly, please remember to donate your vouchers to us. We’ll

need them by early May so we can count them and send them off to get our

new equipment.

Let’s make this our most successful year yet!

Year 12 Spanish and Geography Trip to Barcelona

From the Spanish students:

We were very lucky to be part of the five day trip to Barcelona for Spanish and Geography students.

Although meeting at Gatwick at 5:45 am on Saturday morning was a tad strenuous, we were all so excited

for what was to come. Upon arrival in Barcelona, we travelled on a coach to the city centre, discovering

La Sagrada Familia and other various tourist attractions – and we obviously had to take an obligatory

group photo! After being given a brief introduction to the city, we checked into our hotel in Sitges (35km

from Barcelona’s centre). We were then given some free time to explore the town, leading us to discover

its beauty! There was a long promenade of restaurants, bars, palm tree-lined roads, an idyllic Church, and

most importantly a picturesque beach, all of this within a two minute walk from where we were staying!

For safety, we were always in groups no fewer than three, so our favourite thing to do each evening was

witness the beautiful sunset at dusk as a large group on the beach.

The next couple of days involved Spanish lessons in the Hola! school nearby, cultural visits to La

Sagrada Familia, tours around La Pedrera and 4 Gats, where Picasso, and many other influential artists have visited. In addition to this, we walked around the food market, enjoyed churros con chocolate, and had

free time on the ‘Oxford Street’ of Barcelona, Las Ramblas! On the penultimate day, after being separated

for so long, the Spanish and Geography students all joined together in the four main zones of El Raval, a

neighbourhood within Barcelona. Here we carried out surveys, asking locals about the renovation and

development of the area (in Spanish of course!) which really enabled us to become more confident in

speaking the language. Some evenings prior to dinner, we had evening sessions which was a really nice way

to feed back on our favourite moments of the day and relax at the same time. Every dinner time provided

typical Spanish food, whilst also being a platform to tell each other what we’d done.

On the last evening, we had extra free time, more group pictures and sadly – we packed. The next

day, we handed in our keys and departed the hotel. However, the coach journey to the airport will always

be unforgettable; we played music (probably too loudly!) through a speaker and were nostalgically

reflecting on the holiday. As we landed in London, there were a large number of upset faces, but we were

all looking forward to seeing our friends and family at home! This trip was a perfect way to bond with

friends, gain confidence and learn new and relevant skills for our A-level courses. We all recommend you

go on this trip if you’re given the chance!

Year 12 Spanish and Geography Trip to Barcelona

From the Geography students:

Last week, Year 12 geographers were lucky enough to fly off to Barcelona to carry out fieldwork for our

geographical investigations paper. Everyone was incredibly excited, one student ,Will, even said he “hadn’t

been this excited since he went to Disneyland”.

On the first day we were all given a bus tour around the city of Barcelona, stopping off for a quick visit to

the famous “La Sagrada Familia”, before heading to the coastal resort of Sitges ,where our hotel was. We

used this resort as a base of operations over the next five days to carry out our fieldwork.

After a good first night, we were off the next morning to investigate flood risk in several dry river beds.

We were all taught how to set up a river transect and later on, in our summary lesson, we used our data

to calculate the potential discharge of the rivers. The next day we investigated the ­­­­­rebranding of four

rural villages, this day gave us an opportunity to practice collecting primary data as well as enjoying the

amazing scenery and banter on board the coach. This data collection also gave us vital practice for the next day when we conducted similar surveys in the El Raval district of Barcelona itself, which was another

excellent day.

The trip was not all hard work though; we were lucky enough to hit a patch of nice weather and were able

to enjoy our free time in Sitges on the beach, which everybody hugely enjoyed! It provided a great oppor-

tunity for bonding among all the students, both Spanish and Geography, and by the end of the trip every-

one was much closer. There are some great memories and I’m sure everyone will remember it for a very

long time.
