thThe Year of Mercy

In our personal witness to mercy – let’s watch our language. How do we describe other people? Does the way we talk

about others reveal inclusion or exclusion? Does our language condemn? Your children will take a great lesson from our

careful and merciful speech.

NO CLASS SCHEDULE APPROACHINGThere will be no classes January 17-19 in honor of the

Martin Luther King holiday.

Mr. Pantano and Mrs. Coughlin’s Sunday Level One ClassThis month the children learned about the season of Advent. They learned that it was a special time to prepare for the coming of Jesus Christ.

A READING FROM THEACTS OF THE APOSTLESPeter proceeded to speak to those gatheredin the house of Cornelius, saying:“In truth, I see that God shows no partiality.Rather, in every nation whoever fears him

and acts uprightlyis acceptable to him.You know the word that he sent to the Isra-

elites

Feast of the Baptism of the Lord

A READING FROM THE HOLY GOSPEL ACCORDING TO LUKEThe people were filled with expectation, and all were asking in their heartswhether John might be the Christ.John answered them all, saying,“I am baptizing you with water, but one mightier than I is coming.I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of his

sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and

fire.”

After all the people had been baptizedand Jesus also had been baptized and was

praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit de-

scended upon himin bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven,“You are my beloved Son;with you I am well pleased.” The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

A READING FROM THE BOOKOF THE PROPHET ISAIAHThus says the LORD:Here is my servant whom I uphold,my chosen one with whom I am pleased, upon whom I have put my spirit;he shall bring forth justice to the nations, not crying out, not shouting, not making his voice heard in the street.a bruised reed he shall not break, and a smoldering wick he shall not quench, until he establishes justice on the earth;the coastlands will wait for his teaching.

I, the LORD, have called you for the victory of justice,

I have grasped you by the hand;I formed you, and set youas a covenant of the people,a light for the nations,to open the eyes of the blind,to bring out prisoners from confinement, and from the dungeon, those who live in

darkness. The word of the Lord . . . Thanks be to God.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM The Lord will bless his people with peace.

as he proclaimed peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all,

what has happened all over Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptismthat John preached, how God anointed Jesus of Nazarethwith the Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing goodand healing all those oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.”

The word of the Lord . . . Thanks be to God.

Page 8: St. Mary’s Washingtonville · 1/10/2016  · January 10, 2016 The Baptism of the Lord “When Jesus had been baptized and was praying, heaven was opened.” Gerard Chiffriller,

Baptism Bullet Points• Baptism is given to us as a gift by Jesus himself in the gospels. He says,

“One MUST be born again by water and the Holy Spirit”.

• This Sacrament welcomes us into a relationship with God: Father, Son, and

Holy Spirit by removing the barrier of Original Sin, after which the gifts of

God’s grace can begin to flood the soul.

• It is the foundational Sacrament on which all others are based. That’s why

folks who haven’t been Baptized can’t receive Confession, Communion, or

Confirmation.

• “You cannot give what you do not have.” That’s why at least one parent

must be a practicing Catholic. Sacraments aren’t magic and must be lived to

accomplish what they start.

• Godparents: Sometimes people get twisted about “sponsors”. Here’s a

way to look at it. You don’t want me tutoring your kid in Chemistry! I failed

junior year Chemistry. In the same way, a non-practicing Catholic can’t really

help your son or daughter in faith. I’m not hurt if someone says, “Don’t ask

Father Maurer to teach you Organic Chemistry”. They’re right! The kid would

be better off without my limited understanding of Chemistry.

• Baptism begins our relationship with Jesus’ life and love in our lives. How-

ever, we know, all too well, that what we start we often don’t finish. Just ask

your New Year resolutions! Here’s a good verbal device to remember this

point.

Baptism Begins, Confession Corrects, Fidelity Finishes
