Euphrasie Barbier, Foundress of the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions was born on 4th January in Cean, Normandy – France. From

a tender age she received her religious training from her pious parents, which prepared her even at an early age of nine to offer herself to God and His people.

As she grew in years, inspired by the Spirit of God, she desired to reach out to the people of the entire world. In 1861, Euphrasie reached Lyons - France; her plan was to set out to far off mission fields to serve the poor and needy. She however, discovered that she was destined for a greater work the founding of the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions.

Three years later, she sent her first group of Sisters to New Zealand. That was but the beginning of sending and journeying of her Sisters to various parts of the world. This valiant, energetic, intelligent woman herself undertook difficult sea voyages to the four corners of the world to visit her sisters and missions.

India was one of the countries, which had the privilege of receiving her and her companions in 1883. She won the hearts of the Indian people by her humility and

simplicity and above all by her love.

Deeply in love with God and passionately in love with people, caused her to insert herself and her sisters among the Indians in order to reach out to them. The goal of this reaching was to empower them, to transform their existence and face the challenges of life intelligently, confidently and courageously.

A born teacher far above the ordinary, she knew that education was the vital force for social, moral, emotional, spiritual and psychological development. She opened schools, colleges, orphanages and work - centers to prepare the young women and children for their future life.

Having completed her mission on earth this valiant little woman went to her heavenly abode on 18th January 1893, to her God whom she loved and served with all her strength.

The light of love and service which Euphrasie Barbier lit in all the continents is kept burning by her sisters today, who endeavour to carry on the work which she began and other works according to the demands of the time, ever mindful of the motto she gave them “All for the glory of God”.

VIRTUEAND

KNOWLEDGE

St. Mary’s College of Teacher Education is named after the Blessed Virgin Mary, the woman who epitomized in herself the qualities of womanhood.

Every Student-teacher is called to imitate her virtues of purity, modesty, simplicity, self-respect, courage and self-effacing love and inculcate them in the young who will pass through their hands.

The Letters RNDM embossed in the center of the College Coat of Arms and Motto denotes the place given to Mary, the Lady of Grace and Virtue.

The Ivy branches stand for continuity, growth and openness to God, to others and to life. Surrounding the Ivy Branches, we find the words, Virtue and Knowledge.

The Crown signifies the Victory of Education over illiteracy and ignorance.

True knowledge leads to cultivation of virtues without which education loses its power of transforming society. True education contributes to the blossoming of the human being.

Hence, “Students of St. Mary’s College of Teacher Education”; let us nobly do our part, tenaciously playing the game of life and aiming at virtue high. Let knowledge ennoble our lives and those around us.
