Why the sudden personality change? Even more puzzling, why would Jesus intentionally do something he knew would ultimately lead to his arrest and execution? Jesus knew that to attack the Temple was to do violence to the very heart of all Jewish people, but he also noted that this structure which had been intended to be a sanctuary for worship and community enrichment, had become a place noted for its idolization of wealth and greed. It was now a building that represented everything that oppressed people. Jesus’ act was symbolic, but he doesn’t just stop at tearing down. Jesus offers a replacement, a value system that will deliver people from the bondage of greed and bottomless self-regard. In their place, Jesus wants to build a new kind of temple in our hearts. A temple that idealizes and radiates compassion, embodies service and promotes the highest regard for those who cannot fend for themselves. This new temple that Jesus proposes for all of us, is centered in the Father, enriched by the power of the Spirit, and modeled on that of Jesus’ own life. It is a new temple, fully dedicated to the God who, in St. Paul’s words, is ‘wiser than human wisdom’ and ‘stronger than human strength.’” (adapted from http://celebrationpublications.org/issues-week/2018-03-04)

Lent is a time for penance and repentance, for almsgiving and prayer, for working to change attitudes that are not pleasing to God.

Stations of the Cross Fridays during Lent @ 7:00 pm

Please consider taking thirty minutes of time each week to reflect on the final

hours of Jesus’ life by taking part in the Stations of the Cross. This week the Stations are being led by members of the Hospitality Ministry.

In addition to the regular parish sched-ule, the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available at St. Mary’s all the Wednes-

days of Lent from 7:30-8:30 pm (March 7, 14, 21 and 28th). Jesus is on His way to Jerusalem to celebrate Passover. He quickly responds to the appalling acts taking place in the temple with holy audacity, righteous anger, and consuming zeal. Just as Jesus clears the temple, if we are living temples of the Holy Spirit, we can also ask what abominations are taking place in us. Action: Pray to the Holy Spirit to identify what needs to change in your life. Dare to ask God for help and mercy.

Tips for the best Lent: 6. The Three T’s Why not examine your life in the following three areas and see where and how you can give, as St. Teresa of Calcutta said:”Give until it hurts!” Time! Give of your time to others. Start at home because charity begins at home. Talents! We all have talents. Lent is time to conquer our laziness and work diligently to cultivate our God-given talents. “Better to wear out then rust out!” Treasures! If you have an excess of food, clothing, money and material possessions, give and give. You are giving to Jesus in the poor! (https://catholicexchange.com/10-tips-best-lent

Please keep in your prayers our elect, Josie Peacock and Amanda Arsenault, who celebrate the first of three scrutinies at the 10 am Mass this weekend, in

preparation for baptism at Easter. “The scrutinies, which are solemnly celebrated on Sundays and are reinforced by an exorcism, are rites for self-searching and repentance and have above all a spiritual purpose. The scrutinies are meant to uncover, then heal all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the elect; to bring out, then strengthen all that is upright, strong and good. For the scruti-nies are celebrated in order to deliver the elect from the power of sin and Satan, to protect them against temptation, and to give them strength in Christ, who is the way, the truth, and the life. These rites, therefore, should complete the con-version of the elect and deepen their resolve to hold fast to Christ and to carry our their decision to love God above all.” (source: Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, CCCB)

Readings for the Fourth Sunday of Lent First Reading (2 Chronicles 36:14-17a, 19-23+) The wrath and steadfast kindness of the Lord are shown by the exile and restoration of the people. Second Reading (Ephesians 2:4-10) Even when you were dead in your trespasses, by God’s grace you have been saved. Gospel (John 3:14-21) God sent his only-begotten Son so that the world might be saved through him.

“You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything…” Exodus 20:4 How many ‘gods’ do you put before God? ‘Idols’ do not always take the shape of physical things, things we can touch and feel. Those are easy to recognize. Many times they take the form of things we cannot touch and are much harder to spot like pride, power, ego, time, comfort or health.” (http://archstl.org/wardship/page/bulletin-inserts)

Although we do not live in a time where the Catho-lic Faith is threatened as was the Judaism of Esther’s generation; we need committed disciples of Jesus Christ. Teenagers & men with conviction who will recognize God has called us to be Catholics “for such a time as this” because we live

in a generation where there are many forces intent on un-dermining Catholic faith, identity and practice. This year’s conference will be held at St. Peter’s on the evening of March 16th from 6-9 pm and March 17th from 9–4 pm. The speakers will include Fathers Jerome Lavigne, Jonathan Gibson, Cristino Bouvette and Raymond de Souza.

12:00 pm (noon) on Saturday, March 17th at St. Mary’s Cathedral. Following the celebration of Mass, a buffet lunch will be served in St. Mary’s Parish Hall, which will showcase Irish culture. LENTEN REFLECTION – REDUCE FOOD WASTE Laudato Si’ is a call to conversion and action, an invitation to change direction by taking on the task of caring for our common home. Did you know that most households throw away 50% of the food that is purchased? This week as a Lenten "Fast for Creation" commitment, make a list before you go shopping, look in your fridge and cupboards, and make a list of only those items you need. Not only will you save money on your grocery bill, but you will also reduce the amount of food that you throw out that ends up at the landfill.
