The Joy of the Easter Sacraments
"Have among yourselves the same attitude that is also yours in Christ Jesus "(Phil 2,5). Then ours will be a "Happy Easter". – Pope Francis
During this season of Easter joy, we would like to
congratulate and welcome our newest members of
the Catholic Church who completed the sacraments
of initiation last week at the Easter Vigil Mass.
(Please see the list on the next page).
Since the Fall, they have been on a path of learning
and spiritual growth through the RCIA, the Rite of
Christian Initiation of Adults.
During Holy Week, Fr. Eric shared with them some
thoughts from Pope Francis. In one of his Holy Week
homilies, Pope Francis urged all of us to enter into
the mystery of the week by taking on “the same
attitude” as Christ – by “putting on Christ,” as St.
Paul reminds us in Col. 3:10.
The Pope’s message to think and act more like Christ
was something we had hoped to convey throughout
our sessions together. Through the sacraments, we
can encounter Christ. At our Baptism, the Pope
reminds us, “the grace of God cleanses us from sin
and we put on Christ (cf. Col 3:10).”
We also encounter Christ through prayer and silent
reflection. And if we’re really listening, we can hear
him calling us to draw closer to him, to strive to put
on his very thoughts. That was a great blessing that
we were able to witness with this amazing RCIA
group.
From the very start, we could see their desire to
know and grow closer to Christ. Their commitment
to serious preparation only grew each week – along
with their friendship and closeness to each other. As
Fr. Eric said in his Easter Vigil homily, our newest
members are a sign to all of us that “God is very,
very good.”
It was a joy to watch them receiving the Eucharist
together last Saturday, for the first time uniting with
Christ – and with the entire community – at the
Lord’s table.
Sara Ann Knutson, a U-M senior, described her
journey this way: “No one forced us to attend the
first Wednesday RCIA meeting, nor were we
obligated to return week after week to listen to Fr.
Eric explain the power of prayer or the mystery of
the Incarnation. But there we were, because those
evenings meant something to us. Somewhere along
the way we became a tight-knit community,
everyone supporting each other in their hardships,
their celebrations, their spiritual journey toward
entering in relationship with Christ. For months, we
attended mass, unable to receive the Eucharist,
something others take for granted as another part of
Sunday mass. For RCIA candidates, this is what we
have longed for.”
Sara’s desire for closeness and unity with Christ is
something for each of us to consider. As longtime
Catholics, do we approach the Eucharistic banquet
each week with the same longing and eagerness?
Fr. Eric Sundrup, SJ, and Rita Zyber direct and
coordinate the RCIA process here at St. Mary Student
Parish.
