St Mary’s Anglican Church Sunday 7 July 2019
We acknowledge the Dja Dja Wurrung people, the custodians of this land where we gather.
We pay our respects to their elders past and present as we pray for reconciliation.
Sentence: The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; ask
therefore the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest.
Luke10:2
Collect: God of the covenant, in our baptism you called us to
proclaim the coming of your kingdom: give us courage, as you gave
it to the apostles, that we may faithfully witness to your love and
peace in every circumstance of life; in the name of Jesus Christ our
Redeemer, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

A minister decided to skip church one Sunday morning and go play golf. He told his assistant he wasn't feeling well. He drove to the golf course in another city, so nobody would know him. He teed off on the first hole. A huge gust of wind caught his ball, carried it an extra hundred metres and dropped it right in the hole, for a 450 metre hole in one. An angel looked at God and said “What’d you do that for?” God smiled and said “Who’s he going to tell?”

The Rector Wri tes Extraordinary Ordinary
As I reflect over the few weeks, I can’t help but notice a bit of a
common theme that yes, challenges me, surprises me and delights
me. There have been a number of occasions where I have found
myself holding words spoken about me, to me that remind me of my
son, Hayden, some years ago. My niece and family had visited, and
she handed to Hayden her little week-old baby, Trinity, to hold. He
stood there, looked at her with amusement and joy, and
apprehension and fear, at what to do with this fragile little one. He
wasn’t sure how to hold her and afraid she might break. That’s a fair
enough response I think from a very young man on such an
occasion. Beholding the new, is exactly that, new and there is a very
real element of the unknown, the unfamiliar. There is no, “oh yeah I
got this I know how to do this” as the experience was a first time. In
one sense, we could say it was an extraordinary moment in the
ordinariness of the everyday.
I have been reminded of that scenario lately as I have been handed
feedback from my lecturers at the recent intensives both in Sydney
and Melbourne and can relate to Hayden’s mixed response in
holding what’s being readily placed into your hands. During this third
week in Ordinary Time, the readings focus on the transforming power
of the ordinary. In a world of celebrity, of “Reality TV”, and of value
given only to winners and to those who are larger than life, it can be
tempting to think that the ordinary has no contribution to make, that
“vanilla” people can make no difference. But, the Gospel does not
despise small things. God’s Reign is a reality in which the least, the
child and the marginalised all have significant value to offer. And
that, I think is such a challenge for many to grasp, including myself.
More often than not, we shirk from any suggestion that what we
have to offer is of worth. Like Hayden with Trinity, we contort with the
thought that our own uniqueness, our own self, who we are, as we
are, our stories, can be embraced, valued and even enjoyed for
what they are and, are in-fact something of great worth and
precious. As I reflect on this week’s readings and the message that
shines through, I am confronted and challenged to indeed believe
God is in the very ordinary and can do extraordinary things with it.
May you find yourself this week, celebrating the small and the
ordinary in your worship and like Hayden, like me, find yourself
hearing the small whisper of our heavenly Father say, “here, hold
this.”
Blessings Rev Tracey
