Bulletin Deadline

Monday - 8:00 AM (FOR CONSIDERATION)

Send requests to: [email protected]

Please notify the Parish Office if you or some-one you know will be hospitalized or confined at home and would like to receive the Anointing of the Sick.

In Need of a Minister of Care Visit? Perhaps you or a loved one is unable to attend Mass, perhaps due to a surgery, chronic illness, or difficulty in mobili-ty… It is important that each parishioner knows they are a part of our community, even when not able to actively participate. Each of us is in need of Christ’s presence in our lives… Ministers of Care bring the Eucharist to the homebound and offer prayer. Also, if you or a loved one is admitted to Kish Hospital, please make sure the patient’s name is given to the hospital on admission and it will be added to the list for communion visits. Call the church office if you or a loved one is in need of the Eucharist being brought to the home. Please continue to pray for the sick and homebound.

From the Desk of Pope Francis — (from his Homily at World Youth Day in Panama)

Pope Francis told journalists that while he fully supports the suffering people of Venezuela, pick-ing a side in the crisis “would be pastoral impru-dence on my part and would cause damage.”

“That is why I had to be - I don’t like the word ‘balanced’ - I must be a shepherd to all and if they need help, then they must come to an agreement and ask for it,” he said.

The people said that he thought carefully about his words to the people of the country because “I suffer for what is happening in Venezuela in this moment.” “What is it that scares me? Bloodshed,” the pope said. “And that is why I ask for generosity from those who can help resolve the problem.”

Pope Francis also addressed the issue of abortion, which was among the themes of the Way of the Cross at World Youth Day January 25.

EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION NEEDED

Training sessions are scheduled Monday, April 22 at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday, April 27 at 10:00 a.m. in the Church. Please contact the Parish Office at 815-758-5432 if you would like to sign up for Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion training. Our Parish is in great need of Extraordinary Ministers for all Masses but especially at the 4:30 and 10:30 Masses. Jesus called imperfect men to serve as his disciples and to build his Church on earth. Is Jesus calling you to serve our Parish as an Extraordinary Minister? Mentoring is included with training to alleviate any fear in serving in this ministry. If you have ques-tions and would like to inquire more about the ministry, please call Peter and Lisa Clark at 815-756-1068.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING ST MARY SCHOOL!

Today’s Gospel story for the 5th Sun-day of Lent is a beautiful lesson on the power of God’s mercy. As the story goes, a woman is caught in the very act of adultery, then, verbally condemned by the scribes and Pharisees - who eventually walk away realizing they are sinners as well, and the story concludes with Jesus lifting her up and forgiving the woman of her sin. We can often dwell on the past or be reminded by oth-

ers of our mistakes. Jesus’ loving concern shows us that

His mercy frees us from the burden of having to worry

about what others think of us, and frees us from having

to carry around the burden that I think I’m unforgiva-

ble. Yes, we all sin, but God’s mercy is so much greater

than our sins. Let’s experience His mercy, get back up,

and pursue our vocation in holiness.

Women's Bible Study for Spring

The Joy of the Gospel by Pope Francis The Joy of the Gospel is a passionate call for every Christian to "be constantly ready to bring the love of Jesus to others." Pope Francis envisions a Church of "Spirit-filled evangelizers" who exude joy and care for God's people, especially the poor. Instead of retreating into our own security, he says, we must not be afraid to have our "shoes get soiled by the mud of the street." Pope Francis warns against spiritual worldliness, disunity, and a spirit of pessimism or defeatism.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus is the model of compassion and kindness. He shows us how to be merciful and

nonjudgmental.

When we give to the poor, God indeed pours His love, peace and mercy into our hearts and into the hearts of those suffering in poverty.

There is also an emphasis on support for the fathers, and this has enjoyed increasing participation! The annual Walk for Life is a fundraiser scheduled for May 4. It is a sponsored, family-friendly walk of two miles. If you want to walk OR sponsor a walker, please call the We Care Pregnancy Clinic at 815.748-4242 for information. ST. MARTIN I FEAST DAY—April 13

He was born in Todi, Italy of noble birth on June 21, 598. Pope Theodore I died in 649 and Martin was elected to succeed him. Without waiting for the necessary imperial mandate, he proceeded with his consecration on July 5, 649. This independent act so enraged the emperor that he refused to acknowledge Martin as the legitimate pope. As Bishop of Rome, he staunchly defended the Catholic faith against the heresy of Monothellitism, which denied that Christ had both a human and divine will. Soon after his election, he convened a council at the Lateran and and condemned Monothelitism, its leaders, especially Byzantine Emperor Constans II, and two imperial decrees supporting the heresy. Upon hearing this, Constans became enraged and demanded that Martin be brought before him in Constantinople. Constans then sent Theodore Calliopas and his troops to Rome. Martin was captured and brought back to Constantinople. He was placed in solitary confinement. While in prison, he was subjected to many indignities and tortured unmercifully. On December 19, 653, he was brought to trial on trumped-up charges of treason and sacrilege. The pope, near death and realizing his position futile, could only laugh at the ridiculous accusations and beg the emperor to excuse the fumbling witnesses before they added perjury to their false witness. Martin was sentenced to public flogging and death. His life was spared by the Patriarch of Constantinople, and he was exiled to the Crimea where he died on September 16, 655 suffering from cold and starvation. Pope Martin I had been disgraced in life but later became honored as a martyr.

Mercy Corner In the 1930s, St. Faustina was chosen by Our Lord to be His secre-tary of Mercy. She was instructed by her spiritual adviser to record in her diary, Divine Mercy in My Soul, all the mystical revelations she received. Christ revealed to her His great love for man and especially His mercy, which is greater than our sins.

Jesus declared, “I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for Poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open, I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My mercy. The soul that will go the Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. On that day all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet. (Diary 699).

Jesus also requested that we venerate His image with the inscription, “Jesus I trust in You.” We are so fortunate to have the beautiful im-age painted by Randy Halverson inside the church for reflection and veneration. The two rays denote blood and water. The blood recalls the sacrifice of Calvary and the mystery of the Eucharist. The water symbolizes Baptism and Reconciliation. Confession is a vehicle for great cleansing and healing. “the greater the sinner, the greater the right he has to My mercy.” (Diary 723) The Sacrament of Penance may be received any time during Lent.

Jesus told St. Faustina, “I demand from you deeds of mercy which are to arise out of love for Me. You are to show mercy to your neighbors always and everywhere. You must not shrink from this or try to excuse or absolve yourself from it…It is to be a reminder of the demands of My mercy, because even the strongest faith is of no avail without works.” (Diary 742). Lent is a good time to begin practicing works of charity and detachment from affection to our sins. We are to be merciful to others through our actions, words and prayers on their behalf.

Additional suggested devotions are to recite the Chaplet and Novena of Divine Mercy along with visits to Jesus in Eucharistic Adoration. The two most significant moments of Our Lord’s mission on earth, the Holy Sacrifice of the Cross and the Holy Sacrifice of the Altar, are in reality two parts of a single act: Christ’s sacrifice of Himself on our behalf. The Last Supper and Calvary are made present to us at one and the same time whenever we participate in the Holy Mass or Eucharistic Adoration. In re-presenting Christ’s Sacrifice at each Mass and in Adoration, we experience here and now the spiritual effects of that sacrifice upon us. The work of salvation is being accomplished in us.

Good Friday “Way of the Cross” at Planned Parenthood - Aurora

Through His Holy Passion, Our Lord united Himself with all the victims of suffering in this life. None suffer more innocently than children in the womb whose lives are taken by abortion. None suffer more deeply than their mothers, who carry such a burden of guilt and shame. This year’s service will be officiated by His Excellency Bishop Daniel Conlon of the Diocese of Joliet! On Good Friday we remember all the victims of abortion—the children lost, the mothers wounded, the communities blighted - in a solemn, ecumenical prayer service:

Event: Way of the Cross for Victims of Abortion When: Friday, April 19 at 10:00 a.m. Where: Planned Parenthood, 3051 E New York Street in

In today’s second reading, St. Paul says, “For His sake I have forfeited everything; I have accounted all else rub-

bish so that Christ may be my wealth.” Does my steward-ship suggest that I could say the same?

MERCY MOMENT April 7– “Praise the Lord, for He is good; for His mercy endures forever; Praise the God of gods; for His mercy endures forever; Praise the Lord of lords; for His mercy endures forever; Who alone has done great wonders, for His mercy endures forever; Who skillfully made the heavens, for His mercy endures forever; Who spread the earth upon the waters, for His mercy endures forever; Who made the great lights, for His mercy endures forever; The sun to rule the day, for His mercy endures forever; The moon and stars to rule the night, for His mercy endures forever;…. Praise the God of heaven, for His mercy endures forever.” (Psalm 136:1-9, 26) April 8– “I am going forward through life amidst rainbows and storms, but with my head held high with pride, for I am a royal child. I feel that the blood of Jesus is circulating in my veins, and I have put my trust in the great mercy of the Lord.” (Faustina, 992) April 9– “The act of Jesus by which He raised Lazarus demonstrates the end to which the power of the Grace of God can arrive, and the end, therefore to which our conversion, our change can arrive. But listen well: there is no other limit to the divine mercy offered to all! There is no other limit to the divine mercy offered to all! Remember this phrase. And we can all say it together, “There is no other limit to the divine mercy offered to all.”….The Lord is always ready to take away the tombstone of our sins, which separate us from Him, the light of the living.” (Pope Francis, homily of April 6, 2014) April 10– “Oh my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of Thy mercy.” (Fatima Prayer) April 11– “God’s Love is the flower – Mercy the fruit. Let the doubting soul read these considerations on Divine Mercy and become trusting. Divine Mercy, gushing forth from the bosom of the Father, I trust in You. Divine Mercy, greatest attribute of God, I trust in You. Divine Mercy, incomprehensible mystery, I trust in You. Divine Mercy, fount gushing forth from the mystery of the Most Blessed Trinity, I trust in You. Divine Mercy, unfathomed by any intellect, human or angelic, I trust in You. Divine Mercy, from which wells forth all life and happiness, I trust in You. Divine Mercy, better than the heavens, I trust in You. Divine Mercy, source of miracles and wonders, I trust in You. Divine Mercy, encompassing the whole universe, I trust in You. Divine Mercy, descending to earth in the Person of the Incarnate Word, I trust in You. Divine Mercy, which flowed out from the open wound of the Heart of Jesus, I trust in You. Divine Mercy, enclosed in the Heart of Jesus for us, and especially for sinners, I trust in You. Divine Mercy, unfathomed in the institution of the Sacred Host, I trust in You. Divine Mercy, in the founding of Holy Church, I trust in You. Divine Mercy, in the Sacrament of Holy Baptism, I trust in You.” To be continued tomorrow (Faustina, 949) April 12– God’s Love is the flower – Mercy the fruit. (continued from 3/26/15) “Divine Mercy, in our justification through Jesus Christ, I trust in You. Divine Mercy, accompanying us through our whole life, I trust in You. Divine Mercy, embracing us especially at the hour of death, I trust in You. Divine Mercy, endowing us with immortal life, I trust in You. Divine Mercy, accompanying us every moment of our life, I trust in You. Divine Mercy, shielding us from the fire of hell, I trust in You. Divine Mercy, in the conversion of hardened sinners, I trust in You. Divine Mercy, astonishment for Angels, incomprehensible to Saints, I trust in You. Divine Mercy, unfathomed in all the mysteries of God, I trust in You. Divine Mercy, lifting us out of every misery, I trust in You. Divine Mercy, source of our happiness and joy, I trust in You. Divine Mercy, in calling us forth from nothingness to existence, I trust in You. Divine Mercy, embracing all the works of His hands, I trust in You. Divine Mercy, crown of all of God’s handiwork, I trust in You. Divine Mercy, in which we are all immersed, I trust in You. Divine Mercy, sweet relief for anguished hearts, I trust in You. Divine Mercy, only hope of despairing souls, I trust in You. Divine Mercy, repose of hearts, peace amidst fear, I trust in You. Divine Mercy, delight and ecstasy of holy souls, I trust in You. Divine Mercy, inspiring hope against all hope, I trust in You.” (Faustina, 949) April 13– “The Lord came down in a cloud and stood with him [Moses] there and proclaimed the name, “LORD.” So the Lord passed before him and proclaimed: The Lord, the Lord, a God gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in love and fidelity, continu-ing His love for a thousand generations, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion, and sin…. Moses at once knelt and bowed down to the ground. Then he said, “If I find favor with You, Lord, please, Lord, come along in our company. This is indeed a stiff-necked people; yet pardon our wickedness and sins, and claim us as Your own.” “ (Exodus 34:5-7, 8-9)
