ANTIOCHIAN ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN ARCHDIOCESE OF NORTH AMERICA

April 10, 2020

Beloved Faithful in Christ,

Greetings to all of you in the Name of our Great God and Savior, Jesus Christ!

By the grace of God, we have come to the completion of the forty-day fast. Our

ascetical labors this year have been without the consolations of the Lenten services or

the gathering of the faithful to receive the Holy Eucharist. We have made these difficult

decisions to protect our vulnerable brothers and sisters as well as our health care

workers by reducing opportunities for this novel virus to spread unchecked. I know

that this has been as immensely difficult for all of you as it has been for me. We all long

for that day when we will gather again in our churches to receive the Heavenly Bread

and the Cup of Life as the people of God.

We hoped that we would be able to return to a normal liturgical life during Holy Week

and Pascha. Unfortunately, after much prayer and deliberation, in coordination with our

Mother Church of Antioch and the other Orthodox jurisdictions comprising the

Assembly of Bishops as well as with the advice of the civil authorities and public health

officials, we have determined that the time is not yet here. While we are heartbroken to

extend the restrictions of our services to clergy, servers and chanters during this most

holy time of the year, we take heart knowing that we are all sharing this burden together.

We give thanks to God that we are beginning to hear of hopeful signs in this fight. We

even hear of plans for a return to normal life or as they say a new normal. Beloved in

Christ, I want us to reflect this Holy Week – in the quiet prayerfulness of our little home

churches – on what we should consider normal. So much of what our fallen humanity

considers normal was transformed by the Passion and Resurrection of our Savior. How

can we continue to strive for power, wealth, or lusts of the flesh when we look on the

Cross of our Crucified Master? How can we willingly enslave ourselves to sin when

Christ has broken our bonds asunder and raised up our fallen nature by His

Resurrection?

Page 3: St. Mary Orthodox Christian Church · 2020-04-20 · St. Mary Orthodox Christian Church 344 S. Martinson, Wichita, KS 67213 Rev. Fr. Aaron Warwick -Deacon James Kallail Website: IN

Let our thirst for a return to normal life not be for a return to what is natural to our fallen

human state but for a life full of grace and holiness. Let our new normal include this

increased life of prayer in our homes. Let it continue to include a willingness to sacrifice our needs for the needs of our neighbor, a greater sense of responsibility to our wider community, a deepened feeling of gratitude for our many blessings, a heightened concern for the elderly and vulnerable, and an increased respect for our health care workers and first responders. When we are able to return triumphantly to our churches – as the crowds joined Christ

triumphantly entering Jerusalem – let our desire for the Holy Eucharist today be a reminder for all our days to never take it for granted. Let our every reception going forward be with greater love for God and our neighbor, forgiveness for all who have offended us, prayerful preparation, genuine repentance, and true thanksgiving.

Beloved in Christ, I offer my gratitude to all of you for your cooperation during these trying times. We have heard many times this week that, although there are signs of hope, the time to let up on the social distancing measures has not yet arrived. Likewise, our time of fervent prayer for our deliverance from this pandemic is still vitally necessary. We need all of our homes to be churches during this Holy Week, and we need all your prayers to be offered up continually as sweet-smelling incense. Do not let up, my dear spiritual children!

This year we will anticipate the glorious Resurrection on the third day as the disciples did – from within our homes with the doors being shut. Just as the Resurrected Christ came to them in the Upper Room to reveal His victory over sin and death, may He also reveal Himself mys-tically in all our homes and instill in our hearts the joy of His presence and the firm assurance that He has overcome world.

With great love and fervent prayers for all as we bow down and worship the life- giving and saving Passion of our Lord, I remain,

Your Father in Christ,

+JOSEPH

Tanya Husselman – Currently working from home, but it is great to take my laptop outside. We have taken walks and working in the yard. Our dog Maxwell will not want us to go back to the office. Ro Kallail – I worked a 1000 piece puzzle and realized I HATE 1000 piece puzzles! I don’t like the messy dust particles. Helen Stitt – Jerry and I have been working in the yard cleaning out the flower beds, and he has been treating the wood railings on our deck steps. We walk outside with our daughter and her family and see our son’s family since we live in the same neighborhood. Of course, we are keeping our distance!! Just when we think we are too busy to add one more thing to our calendars, life has a crazy way of clearing our calendar for us! Take care everyone! We miss you. Theodora Stevens – Not sure if this is fair, I’m not home, but still working. Though on weekends playing catch-up and trying to learn different types of bread to bake! Deacon James – I have been working remotely from home most of the time. I have lots of Zoom meetings. I stay connected to my kids and nephews across the nation by playing online computer games together. Ro and I do puzzles, play ping-pong, and watch movies. I keep my spiritual life active at home and in church. Laura Stanley – I’m in contact with my special education students and their parents, checking on their lessons and making sure everyone is OK. I’m also reading adventure books on mountain climbing, and attending 3 on-line Microsoft team meetings per week. I’m proud to say I have not watched any shows having to do with tigers. TC Wallace – Cleaning and purging old stuff. Robbie Namee – Working from home. Getting caught up on “To Do” List. Working from home. Getting caught up on “To Do” List. Repeat! Mike Zarich – We had 4 ceiling fans to install. Thought doing it myself would keep me from being bored. After an epic battle with the first 2 fans (which I lost), I decided to risk being bored and called an electrician! Oh, and we have done a couple of jigsaw puzzles. Charlie Walker – I've become an expert at whittling and knife throwing, a.k.a. I'm getting really good knife sharpening and drywall work. Dennis Fairbanks – Yard work, home projects, tax preparations, investment research and budget manage-ment. Mike Shaheen – I have been keeping myself busy. I have been doing a lot of work in the yard, been catching up on my reading, cleaning the house, organizing shelves, and keeping in touch with family. Michelle is work-ing at the palliative care unit in Via Christi. She has been keeping pretty busy with patients. That’s really it. I do miss not going to church and seeing everyone. Steven Shippy – Crying in the corner.

What have you been doing while staying home quarantined?

The Lord's Diner exists to combat hunger in the community. The Diner's singular mission is to serve a nutritious meal with dignity and respect to anyone who is hungry. The Lord’s Diner serves an evening meal 365 days a year. The Lord’s Diner serves an average

of 2,500 meals nightly at two dining facilities (one in downtown Wichita and one in south Wichita) and three food trucks (one in northwest Wichita, and one in southeast Wichita, and one in northeast Wichita) to any guest who needs a nutritious meal, 60 percent of which are families. St. Mary volunteers serve at The Lord’s Diner on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. We gather at the downtown location, Central and Broadway, at 5:15 p.m. We are usually finished by 8:00 p.m, so come join us. All volunteer sign up is now taking place on SIGN UP GENIUS. For more information contact Vicki Jones at 650-0658 or [email protected] .

The St Mary Meal Train ministry was formed in 2016 to serve the families in our parish immediately following the birth of a child. After the birth of a child, what to eat for dinner is not usually at the forefront of new parents' minds. Instead, new parents are focused on the new life they have created and finding their new normal between dirty diapers, seemingly near-constant cries, and many feedings.

MEAL TRAIN

ST. MARY

“St. Mary On the Go” is an adult fellowship for the St. Mary parishioners. All adults are invited to participate in planned activities scheduled at least 4 times a year: March, June, September and December. There is no theme or purpose to this ministry team other than to enjoy each other and have social time together.

Our goal is to provide the evening meal every day for a week. The meals have been a mixture of home cooked, frozen, and store-bought meals as well as restaurant gift cards. We also provide a supply of paper products such as plates, napkins, cutlery, and cups to reduce the workload of the family. Being part of this ministry does not mean that you have to be involved every time a request is sent out. Each of us has our own commitments and are sometimes unable to help. Any help at all is much appreciated by the families we are serving. If you would like to be part of this ministry, please contact Mindy Walker ([email protected]) or Jessica Lessman ([email protected]) to get on the mailing list.

PARISH COUNCIL

From the Ministry Teams

The Parish Council has taken steps to reduce operating costs wherever possible. Our Secretary and custodian have been completing many tasks outside of their normal routine, which has kept them very busy. Hand sanitizers have been installed in the main Foyer and in front of the food line in the church hall in anticipation of the day when we Will return to in-person services.

THE BELLES The Belles enjoyed holding fellowship meetings through Zoom. A good time was had by all, especially getting to see some of our out-of-town members! Look for information by email about future Belles fellowship Zoom meetings.

March 31

April 8

The Belles Bazaar is scheduled for September 26. If you know of any vendors that would like to attend, please contact Robbie Namee at [email protected].

Thank you to everyone who participated in the toiletry bag drive for Passageways for homeless veterans, and Empowering Women For New Beginning for women coming out of prison. There are at least 60 bags that have been collected so far, along with a monetary donation that will be given to one of the organizations. The food pantry has been a real challenge during these days of the stay at home order. Many of the homeless who come to St. Mary for a meal have said that we are one of the only resources for meals at this time. We have provided 100 meals during the past few weeks and have enough food to provide 20 more. We pray that this situation will end soon so that we can continue to provide this service to the community. We pray that all of you are staying safe and well during this challenging time. God bless you

all. Christ is risen! Indeed He is risen!

Due to the current public health crisis surrounding the Coronavirus (COVID-19) and to ensure the health and safety of our guests, workers, and parishioners, our annual Mediterranean Festival scheduled for May 15-16 has been cancelled. While the health and safety of everyone and the ongoing restrictions limiting gatherings to 10 or less people made this an easy decision, it didn’t make it easy to deal with. Sharing our food and heritage with our community has been an important part of our parish since the founding of this church, and for 87 years we have been able to open up our parish home to others so that we can share our faith and our founding heritage with them. We are incredibly sad that we will not have the opportunity to do that this year, even though we know it is for the best. The festival committee has been meeting and discussing since early March to work through all possible options during this difficult and ever-changing situation. Over the years we’ve dealt with many obstacles before and during the festival—tornados, flooding, loss of electricity, emergency appendix removals, Mike Zarich out of town, the great cabbage roll disaster of 2008—to name a few. During one meeting earlier this year the comment was made that “There isn’t much that could be thrown at us anymore that we don’t know how to handle!” Wow, were we wrong! I don’t think any of us ever could have imagined we would be faced with a global pandemic that has effectively shut down our city, state, country, and world—and with it our beloved Mediterranean Festival. Taking the ongoing uncertainty of this situation into consideration, along with the potential after-effects, and the opportunities we presently have to sell our existing inventory in a safe and convenient way, we will be selling the current items in a format similar to our pre-sale. While the date for that sale is to be determined as we await further information from our local government regarding restrictions and shelter-in-place orders, we hope this allows us to earn a little bit of income without creating new concerns or even possible losses. As always, our guests and our parishioners have been incredibly supportive and encouraging through these challenging times, and we are looking forward to being able to share our food and faith once again with everyone next year. We will be back and the 2021 will be our biggest and best festival yet!
