Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Series Part 4)

This week brings us to the last word (Here we can substitute meal for Body). Meal: If we are to understand the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, celebrated three weeks ago, we must come to a better understanding of the significance

of this word. The reading from Romans on that Sunday said, “those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance.” The phrase, “Those who are called”, tells us that there are some that are not called. Who are they and why are they not called could it be that they do not or cannot make the response to the covenant faithfully? The phrase: “May receive” tells us that there are some conditions, maybe, that would prevent reception by some and that there may be times some people should not receive. The meal though is important. Let’s suppose that we can think in terms of a meal you would eat at home or at a restaurant. We partake in that kind of meal, primarily for the health of the body, even when it can also be for social interaction. If you have an illness you should be cured of that illness before having a full meal. This only makes sense. It is the same with this meal, the Eucharist. We must not be seriously ill, have unrepented and unforgiven mortal sin, when receiving this meal or else we will become sicklier still.

We have the four words: Covenant, Response, Body and Blood. Our response begins in Baptism, reaffirmed in Confirmation, should continue perpetually in fidelity, and never end because the promised inheritance is eternal. Isn’t it wonderful that we can celebrate the most bountiful blessing of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ every Sunday?

On the weekend of June 30 & July 01, Fr. Paul M. Gins, O.S.M. of the Order of Friar Servants of Mary (Servites) USA Province will be visiting our parish

to celebrate Masses at St. Mary’s, St. Agnes, and St. Paul’s and to talk to you about their missionary work in KwaZuluNatal, Republic of South Africa.

The Servites are one of the mendicant orders and were founded in the 13th century in Florence, Italy. At the present time, they serve all over the world in every type of apostolate.

The USA Province of Servites is responsible for the missions in KwaZuluNatal. The main task of the missionaries today continues to be the proclamation of the Gospel and the establishment of viable Catholic communities. The idea that the people are the church is quite strong and participation in the liturgy and the work of the Church is very good. Other ministries include education, primary health care centers, and providing funding to improve the water system to root out malaria. They are also ministering to the victims of the AIDS epidemic and the building of homes for these victims and other people of the area. They are in need of prayers and material help to carry on these ministries.

God Bless you for your prayers and financial assistance.

Pastoral Plan Information

(Fruit Bearing)

The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us that there are three expressions of prayer, specifically vocal prayer, meditation and contemplation. Since contemplation is purely gift, it is better for us to focus our attention on vocal prayer and meditation while asking, with humility, for contemplation, union with God. “Contemplative prayer is the simplest expression of prayer. It is a gift, a grace; it can be accepted only in humility and poverty.” (CCC 2713) Our progression in prayer, “with the Holy Spirit”, is important. In order for our progression in pastoral planning to be fruitful we must ask for the help of the Holy Spirit in prayer. The next dimension of “Living as Missionary Disciples” directs us toward a way forward in pastoral planning with focus and discernment.

A parish plan provides a direction focused on bearing fruit not just on having activities. It is intentional, visible, and based on wellthoughtout, fruitproducing outcomes. This fruit is clearly rooted in the teachings and pastoral ministry principles of the Church.

It first tells us to not allow “having activities” to become “distractions” in our prayer filled planning. It tells us that our planning must be “wellthoughtout” so as to maintain “vigilance” in achieving our goals. Then, it tells us to avoid “dryness” by looking for “fruitproducing outcomes”. All of this is possible only through our openness to the Holy Spirit’s promptings and by following the “teachings and pastoral ministry principles of the Church”.
