We the people of St. Mary of the Pines are unified by our Baptism to fulfill the mission of the Catholic Church: to proclaim the works of God and to live as Jesus taught.

Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we will improve our lives by continuing to understand the teachings of the Catholic Church, sharing with the poor, providing support for our young people, the sick and the lonely, worshipping with reverence and enthusiasm, providing stewardship for the gifts God has committed to our care, and celebrating together as a Christian family.

Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time August 30, 2020

Be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect. — Romans 12:2

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The name of the LORD has become like fire burning in Jeremiah’s heart (Jeremiah 20:7-9). Psalm — My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God (Psalm 63). Second Reading — Be transformed; renew your mind; discern what is good (Romans 12:1-2). Gospel — Those who lose their lives for Jesus’ sake will find them (Matthew 16:21-27).

THE CROSS OF JESUS The perception of a cross changed dramatically after Jesus’ crucifixion. Before that event, death on a cross was not only horrible, it was degrading. It was a penalty reserved only for the most wretched of criminals. The word “glory” would not have found its way into the same sentence containing the word “cross.” But all that changed with Jesus. Over time, believers began to ven-erate and honor the cross. They painted, sculpted, and carved images of it. Many lost their own lives for their association with it. Today our reverence for and relation-ship with the cross recalls little of the contempt originally associated with it. As it has been through the ages, it is our perception of the cross that determines how we fol-low Jesus.

Questions of the Week Adults: What has it meant to you to take up your cross and follow Jesus? Children: When has it been hard to be a follower of Jesus?

Welcome Pope St. Victor I Several days ago some of the members of the National Black Catholic History Committee along with Fr. Mike blessed the image of Pope St. Victor I, first African Pope. St. Brigid, Santo Nino, St. Joseph, and Our Lady of Guadalupe wel-come St. Pope Victor I as he joins the images which are so dear to our parish celebrations and so many of us. This painting was created by Matthew Wells, son of parishioner and committee member Frances Rachal Antoine. We thank Matt for sharing his talents with our parish!! Victor is best known for his role in the Quartodeciman controversy. Prior to his elevation, a difference in da-ting the celebration of the Christian Passover/Easter between Rome and the bishops of Asia Minor had been tolerated by both the Roman and Eastern churches. The churches in Asia Minor celebrated it on the 14th of the Jewish month of Nisan, the day before Jewish Passo-ver, regardless of what day of the week it fell on, as the Crucifixion had occurred on the Friday before Passo-ver, justifying this as the custom they had learned from the apostles; for this, the Latins called them Quartodecimans.

Fr. Mike, Elmira Trammell, Frances Rachal Antoine, and Sylvia Rachal. Frances and Sylvia are mother and aunt of the artist, Matthew Wells. Fr. Mike blessing the portrait of St. Pope Victor I
