DONUT SUNDAYS ARE BACK. Coffee, juice and donuts will be served on the rectory lawn (weather permitting) immediately following the 9:00 a.m. Mass beginning Sunday, June 28 and

ending August 30. Join us after Mass! It's a wonderful op-portunity to meet other families in the parish.

THE DAUGHTERS OF ST. PAUL, Catholic Sisters who run a Publishing House, are with us this weekend, June 20 and 21. They have a wonderful selection of materials which they publish and produce: Spiritual reading, Lives of the Saints, books for Children, DVD’s, music and more which will be available for sale after all the Masses: Be sure to stop by and peruse their materials which will as-sist you with the faith formation of your family. Find a good book or two for summer reading and gift giving!

Scituate Appalachia Service Project

Last July, a team of 83 Scituate area high school students and adults spent a week in Craigsville, West Virginia with the Appalachia Service Project (ASP). Our teens worked

hard repairing homes for low income families: making them “safer, warmer, and drier” at no cost to their occu-pants. This summer will be the 11th year that Scituate has participated in ASP. During the previous 10 years, the group has helped nearly 100 families in the Appalachia Mountain regions of Tennessee, West Virginia, and Ken-tucky enjoy better living conditions in their homes. ASP is a Christian ministry that builds relationships, faith and ser-vanthood while improving homes for low-income families and individuals throughout Appalachia.

We leave on the Fourth of July, returning home July 12th. It is a wonderful opportunity for the youth in Scituate, spending a week of their summer to give back to those that are less fortunate. Children of St. Mary’s families as well as teens from other parishes in town will learn a valu-able life lesson on the trip: how to give of themselves to strangers while expecting nothing in return.

Following the 4.30pm mass on Saturday June 27th and the 9am and 11am masses on Sunday June 28th, teens participating in this year’s service project will be asking for your support and prayers. The generosity of our parish, toward this awesome cause has been humbling in the past. We are most grateful for the support!

Pastor’s Corner

Today we celebrate Father’s Day, a day given to remember and thank our fathers for all they have done for us and continue to do for us. Without a doubt a mother’s role in raising her children is of vital importance but sometimes we forget the importance of the father’s role in raising his children. The ideal situation and the way God intended is to have both the mother and the father active and engaged in the raising of their children, which creates an environment for them to thrive in. The father’s role in his children’s faith formation is indispensable. When the fathers set the example in faith and char-acter formation the children are more likely to retain their faith into adulthood than if only the mother did. Philip Rivers, the quarterback for the San Diego Chargers and a practicing Catholic, during an interview for “Blessed to Play” spoke about the example of his father who motivated and got the family moving for Sunday Mass. As Philip stated, “when Dad says you are going to Mass, you are going to Mass.” For children the father often becomes an image of God because of the paternal images of God found throughout the Bible and the example of Jesus Christ in the Gospels. When the father takes his role of spiritual leadership seriously and remains active and engaged in the life of his children they develop a more personal and emotional connection with God, who they see as loving and caring like their own Dad. Besides the spiritual dimension the father’s role is important in the social-psychological development of his children, who tend to be better adjusted and have fewer behavioral issues and perform better academically when their father is in-volved and present in their lives. Studies have shown that the absence of fathers in the lives of their children is a contribut-ing factor to violent crimes, incarceration and out of wedlock births among other societal issues. Writing about fathers in his Apostolic Exhortation: The Role of the Christian Family in the Modern World, Saint Pope John Paul II spoke about fatherhood and its importance in family life. In article twenty-five he states: “Love for his wife as mother of their children and love for the children themselves are for the man the natural way of understanding and fulfilling his own fatherhood. Above all where societal and cultural conditions so easily encourage a father to be less concerned with his family or at any rate less involved in the work of education, efforts must be made to restore socially the conviction that the place and task of the father in and for the family is of unique and irreplaceable importance. As experience teaches, the absence of a father causes psychological and moral imbalance and notable difficulties in family relation-ships… In revealing and in reliving on earth the very fatherhood of God, a man is called upon to ensure the harmonious and united development of all the members of the family: he will perform this task by exercising generous responsibility for the life conceived under the heart of the mother, by a more solicitous commitment to education, a task he shares with his wife, by work which is never a cause of division in the family but promotes its unity and stability, and by means of the witness he gives of an adult Christian life which effectively introduces the children into the living experience of Christ and the Church.” To all fathers I congratulate you and wish you a Happy Father’s Day. May each of you continue to make a generous gift of yourself to your wife and children as you live out your vocation as husband and father.

Sincerely yours in Christ, Fr. Cannon

FATHER’S DAY BLESSING

Loving God and Father, on this day when we honor our fathers, our first and best models and our earliest spiritual guides, we ask Your choicest blessings on them.

Thank you for all the times they have nurtured and supported us growing up.

Thank you for all the times they stood by us and loved us when we felt rejected and alone.

May St. Joseph, loving father of Jesus, be their model and guide their hardships and their hopes for the future.

May they find Your beloved Son, Jesus always beside them leading them to holiness and happiness and watch-ing over them faithfully as they have watched over us. Amen.
