November Newsletter

The Virtue for the month of November is Peace.

There are many exciting things and much learning going

on at our school. I would like to take a moment to high-

light a few things.

October was the month of Gratitude and we have much to be thank-

ful for. Thank you for your generosity with the food drive and for supporting our Hal-

loween Dance. Our students did extremely well at Cross Country with three of our

students making it to the City Finals! We also started our Intermediate Volleyball

Teams thanks to the efforts of all of our teacher coaches and students. We have had

Fire Drills and Lock Down practices, our students and staff have done very well. We

have changed our lunches and though it has taken some fine tuning, we are already

reaping the benefits of the changes. We have a very active Parent Council and that

was reflected in the At Home Alone Workshop for parents and students led by Toron-

to Public Health Nurse Stephanie Forestell saw 50 people gathered in our Library on

October 26th learning about safety and being confident when our students are at

home alone. 100% of the people attending said that they learned valuable infor-

mation and got a lot out of the experience. Our Halloween Dance Party and Costume

Day was also a huge success, thank you students and families for the interesting and

spooky costumes. October also saw many leadership opportunities through our Lead-

ership Team and their WE initiatives and our office, school yard and ECO helpers.

As for November, we have already started things off well with the Gr.7/8 trip to

Loretto College to learn about high school life by experiencing a full day of secondary

school. Our students had a great time and learned a lot along with Ms. Machado Dias

and Ms. Silva. We also had our All Saints Day Mass with Fr. Garcia and our Seminarian

Joao and led by the beautiful music of Dr. Bianchi and the excellent readings of our

students led by the preparations of Mrs. Tamburro. Our last excitement on the 1st of

November came in the form of the beautiful, gracious and talented Portuguese au-

thor Isabel Zambujal (pictured below) who had her stories performed by our Gr. 6

and 6/7 classes and who read her exciting

and fun stories to our Gr. 1, 2/3 and ELP

classes. Thanks goes out to Senhora Silva

for organizing such a special event.

The excitement, fun and learning continue,

please encourage your child to get involved

in all of the activities.

Thank you to Stephanie Forestell our Toronto

Public Health Nurse who led us through a ter-

rific program so that our students feel confi-

dent about staying home alone (and so do

their parents). A chance to work through sce-

narios and problems so that when they hap-

pen, you know what to do. Thank you to our

Parent Council for organizing the event, it

was a great success!

Please stay tuned for information on our

upcoming session in April,

Spring Concert in March or April.

Please watch for more information.

Leadership Team—WE make a

Difference

The leadership team sold Terra Cotta Cook-

ie Co. chocolate chip cookies as a kick start-

er to our fundraising efforts this year for

our sister community in Tanzania. Altogeth-

er we raised $250 – a quarter of our goal

for the entire school year! Everyone should

be so proud of this amazing start. Our

school’s efforts have helped improve

healthcare in a very needy community, and

this is just the start! The leadership team is

really excited to continue this great success

and will share information about our next

initiative, rafiki sales, in the coming weeks!

PAINTING St. Mary of the Angels has had a face lift, or

at least a tightening. :)

Our washrooms and hallways have

been freshened up to enhance the

learning experience for our stu-

dents. Thank you to Night Custodian

Mauro Ruberto for spearheading

this exciting and at times exhausting

endeavor. Thank you to the board

and to our students and teachers

who have been supportive and pa-

tient during this process. Let’s take

good care of our improvements!

Drop Off in the Morning

* Thank you for your continued efforts to

keep our students safe. Please drop off

your child in the space provided and then

drive off to make room for the next fami-

and staff are safe.

Did you know that school lunches are a ma-jor source of waste in Ontario? In fact, the average student’s lunch generates a total of 30 kilograms of waste per school year! That is an alarming amount of waste! In an effort to engage students in small environmental initiatives that can make a big impact, St. Mary of the Angels school has adopted a waste-free lunch program. This October, the entire school participated in the week-long

Waste-Free Lunch Challenge, a province-wide initiative run by the Recycling Council of Ontario. This was a great opportunity to re-mind students of the correct use of the green and blue bins, and to showcase the many stu-

dents who consistently bring litter-less lunches to school. We dramatically reduced the waste in our blue bins and made better use of the green bins in all lunchrooms! The event was a great success! We will continue this initiative all year, so please con-tinue to pack those healthy, waste-free lunches!

A Spooky Tale

Imagine an old man whose eyes are deformed. One eye is normal, while the

other looks like a glass ball. Would you be scared? The grade 6/7 class was!

In our class, we read The Tell Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe, a horror story

of a madman who’s afraid of an old man’s eye. What does he do in his mad-

ness? You’ll have to read the chilling tale to find out! Don’t be afraid if you

hear screams coming from the grade 6/7 class, we’re just acting out this

spoooooky tale! Happy Halloween!

Portuguese Author Isabel Zambujal Comes to St. Mary of the Angels

Senhora Silva organized a beautiful visit with famous Portuguese Author Isabel Zam-

bujal. The students in Grades 6 and 6/7 prepared skits and readings while students in

Grades 1 and 2/3 enjoyed the excitement. Ms. Zambujal then went to visit our ELP

classes to read her children’s books to the very excited students. It was a lovely visit

that everyone truly enjoyed. Thank you Senhora Silva for organizing the

event.
