Established 1826
January 22nd - Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), no. 373, designates January 22nd as a particular day of prayer and penance, called the "Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children”: “In all the Dioceses of the United States of Amer-ica, January 22nd shall be observed as a particular day of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life and of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion.” It is said that since the 1973 decisions of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton, there have been over 56 million cases of abortions reported, and this shows how some people do not value the sanctity and dignity of life becaue of selfishness and the wrong notions of their rights and freedom. This reflects with heartbreaking magnitude what Pope Francis means by a “throw away culture.” However, we have great trust in God’s providence. We are reminded time and again in Scripture to seek the Lord’s help, and as people of faith, we believe that our prayers are heard. As individuals, we are called to observe this day through the penitential practices of prayer, fasting and/or giving alms. Another way to take part is through participating in special events to observe the anniversary of Roe v. Wade like what the USCCB (United
States Conference of Catholic Bishops) came up with the nine days for life, prayer rally or march for life done at Wash-ington, DC every January 27th. It is through this that we can express our support to inherent dignity of every person in every circumstance at every stage of life from conception to death. Thus, defend the immeasurable worth of each person and his/her life. Pope St. John Paul II, in his encyclical Evangelium Vitae, said a great prayer for life is urgently needed, a pray-er which will rise up throughout the world. Through special initiatives and in daily prayer, may an impassioned plea rise to God, the Creator and lover of life, from every Christian community, from every group and association, from every family and from the heart of every believer. (Evangelium Vitae, no. 100)
TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The burdens that were once laid upon the people have been vanquished (Isaiah 8:23 — 9:3). Psalm — The Lord is my light and my salvation (Psalm 27). Second Reading — Paul exhorts the believers at Corinth: As there is one Christ, so too must there be no divisions among you. (1 Corinthians 1:10-13, 17). Gospel — After calling his first disciples, Jesus goes throughout Gali-lee teaching, proclaiming the gospel, and curing the people (Matthew 4:12-23 [12-17]).
