October 23rd
This is our weekend of fun and fundraising as we hold our annual Fall Festival. We begin on Saturday (10/22) with the kick-off dinner after the 5:30pm Mass, and Sunday (10/23) is the festival proper with fun, food, games, a silent auction, dance, a raffle, bin-go, etc. from noon ‘til 6pm. This is a family and community event, so every parishioner and all friends are invited to participate. A “thank you” shout-out goes to all our coor-
dinators and volunteers of various booths for helping us make this event a success. Special thanks to the festival chair, Tony Butera, and the co-chair, Doug Walker, our Facilities Manager, Rick Swanson, and all those who worked closely with them in the planning, layout, and logistics of this event. We are grateful to the good Lord who, through the intercession of St. Rita, is blessing us with this beautiful day. Let us enjoy the festival on this day that the Lord has made! Funds raised will go to support our many parish ministries, including our Youth and Formation programs, and our school ministry. Jesus, in today’s gospel, challenges us to avoid being self-righteous. He told the parable of the tax collector and the Phari-see who went to pray in the temple. The Pharisee was full of himself and thus prayed to himself, enumerating all the good things he had done and how he is different from every other person, especially the tax collector. He reminded God of all the good he had done, such as fasting and paying his tithes. He seemed to be too proud of himself and seemed not to think of the good he did as coming from God but rather through his own power. The Pharisee was so full of himself that he failed to no-tice his own emptiness. He thought he had everything but left the temple with nothing. On the other hand, the tax collector could not dare look up to God but rather beat his chest and asked for God’s mercy and forgiveness. He acknowledged his emptiness and his need for God. He left the temple filled with mercy and love. There are times that we act like the Pharisee. We feel that we are not like others who are adulterers and mur-derers. We forget that the good that we do is not by our power, but rather by the grace of God. We are challenged today to re-member that we come before God not because we are already full and good but so that we can be filled and be good. Today is World Mission Sunday! It is a special Sunday set aside by the Universal Church for God’s children to renew their com-mitment to the missionary activities of the Church. Mission Sunday was instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1926 as the day of prayer for missions and to also take up a collection for the mis-sions. Your prayers and generous support on World Mission
Sunday is for the benefit of the Mission Church today. Through your generosity, help will reach clinics caring for the sick and dying, orphanages providing a place of safety and shelter, and schools offering education from kindergarten through high school. Your help provides for seminarians preparing for the priesthood and religious Sisters and Brothers in formation pro-grams. All of this takes place in 1,111 mission dioceses, mostly in Africa and Asia, where the poorest of the poor receive an education and healthcare while experiencing the loving heart of our Lord through the service of priests, religious, and lay faith-ful. As Pope Francis reminds us in his message for this year’s World Mission Sunday, “Let us not close our hearts within our own particular concerns, but let us open them to all of humani-ty.” World Mission Sunday is the birthday of my congregation, the Missionary Society of St. Paul. It was on this day in 1977 that we were instituted in Nigeria. It was also on this day in 1986 that the first MSP missionaries left the Nigerian shore for the United States of America. Three MSPs were pioneer missionar-ies to the United States, but today, we have fifty MSPs working in the U.S.A. As you pray for the missions today, please pray for all MSP priests and seminarians and all those we serve. Some of you have been asking if we are still going to install the projectors in the church. Considering durability and mainte-nance, we have decided to install LED monitors rather than pro-jectors with a screen. Well, work has begun to install them. We are going to build some structures that will hold the monitors first before the installation. The LED monitors are another way of helping parishioners to participate actively in our Sunday and daily worship. Once they are installed, we will be able to see the lyrics of our music without opening the hymnbook and also see some other important information for worship. Thus, many more will be able to sing along and also pray the prayers or the creed without flipping through the pages of a book or missalette, thereby making the Mass more participatory. The monitors will also help our hearing-impaired parishioners enjoy the liturgy better. A new ministry will soon be formed to help us input the information in a system and display them on the monitors. Are you interested? Please talk to Perci, our Liturgy Director. Join our parish in praying for the presidential election on Mon-day, October 24th at the 8:30am Mass. There is so much to pray about in this election. We need the guidance of the Holy Spirit to be able to discern how to exercise our civic rights. May God bless the United States of America.

Weekly Message
Jubilee Year of Mercy
Today’s Gospel graces us with a beautiful prayer that can make every day of our lives a jubilee of mercy: “O God, be merciful to me, a sinner” (Luke 18:13). Religious Israelites despised the tax collector who prayed it, for collaborating with Gentile occupiers and han-dling currency that bore the “divine” emperor’s graven image. But the Pharisee’s long-winded self-congratulation, mixed with self-righteous condemnation, was no “prayer” at all. “The Pharisee . . . spoke this prayer to himself” (18:11, emphasis added). Praying the tax collector’s simple, sincere, succinct cry for mercy acknowledges our own sinfulness and “welcomes” other sinners as brothers and
sisters with whom we can identify, even empathize, echoing Pope Francis’s famous comment about not being the one to judge. Indeed, the tax collector “went home justified” (18:14), that is, restored to God’s friendship, for God’s mercy is not prize achieved but gift received. “Let your pray-er be brief: for tax collector, prodigal son, and dying thief were all reconciled to God by a single phrase!” (Saint John Climacus, 7th century).

Second Collection for October 30th, 2016
Next weekend, our parish will take up the Collection for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, U.S.A. (AMS). The AMS relies solely on private donors in support of its mission, “Serving those who serve,” and its ministry to
provide the same pastoral care and services to Catho-lics serving in the United States Armed Forces, enrolled
in U.S. Military Academies, undergoing treatment at any of the 153 Department of Veterans Affairs’ Medical Centers, working in civilian jobs for the federal govern-
ment beyond U.S. borders, and the families of these populations, as does any other Catholic diocese. While
the salaries and retirement of Catholic military chap-lains are paid for by the U.S. Government, the AMS re-ceives no funding from the government or the military
for its programs and services, including the Co-Sponsored Seminarian Program, which provides priests
for home dioceses and for the military chaplaincy.
To learn more about the AMS, go to www.milarch.org/nationalcollection.
Diocesan Services Fund (DSF) Shortfall
The Diocesan Services Fund supports the Cardinal in ful-filling the mission of the Archdiocese through over sixty
ministries. Our parish goal for this year is $165,000.00. We are grateful to the 398 families that have pledged $146,518.20 and con-tributed $134,830.74 to the DSF. If you have not made a pledge or contributed to DSF this year, kindly consider supporting the Cardi-
nal with this appeal. Envelopes are available in the narthex after Mass. You may also donate online at www.archgh.org/dsf. P.4
The office will be closed next Tuesday, November 1st, in observance of All Saints Day.

Our Pope Speaks: “A society truly welcomes life when it recognizes that it is also precious in old age, in disability, in serious illness and even when it is fading; when it teaches that the call to human fulfillment does not exclude suffering; indeed, when it teaches its members to see in the sick and suffering a gift for the entire community, a presence that summons them to solidarity and responsibility.”

Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Reading I: Sirach 35:12-14, 16-18
The Lord is a God of justice. In the ancient Near East, it was the king's special duty to care for the most helpless members of society. In Israel, God was the Most High King, and so those who were orphaned, widowed, and oppressed were the special concern of God. The basic principle of Israelite law was to be like God.
Reading II: 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18 I have fought the good fight. This section from the Second Let-ter of Paul to Timothy includes a description of Paul's ex-pectation of reward for his faithful service. Today's letter emphasizes that death endured with Jesus will result in life with Him. Paul anticipated divine protection for his contin-ued faithful service.
Gospel: Luke 18:9-14 Everyone who exalts him or herself shall be humbled. In the para-ble of the Pharisee and the tax collector, Jesus contrasts the attitudes of two people praying. The paradox here is that the prayer of the tax collector was preferred by God. In the par-able, Jesus once again combats the self-righteous attitudes that threaten spiritual growth.
American & Catholic Values Ivana Meshell, Director of Adult Faith Formation
In this election year, it is more important than ever that American Catholics need to hear the Word of God and re-spond to it in a new way. One of the reasons why so many American Catholics suffer from lack of a true, personal, and intimate relationship with God and the Church is because there is a constant conflict between the values of what it means to be a good Catholic and a good American. From the beginning of our nation, Americans described their national history as an experiment. Because government of this type had never been tried on this scale, the Founders of our nation weren’t entirely sure it would work. Much was at stake for the early American rev-olutionaries. After the Continental Congress finally voted for independence, they sat in a stunned, “What have we done?” silence. Benjamin Franklin's famous line, "We must all hang together or we shall surely hang separately," took on a deadly serious meaning. The founding fathers took great per-sonal risk and principled stands for a cause not guaranteed to succeed. It was a great gamble, yet one they felt was worth it. Then as now, Americans prized their freedom and will that—as President Lincoln con-cluded his Gettysburg Address—“government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” This is indeed a noble value. Yet, when taken to an extreme, it can become distorted, like many other goods taken to extremes. As Catholics reflect on this experiment in ordered freedom, we understand that true freedom is NOT “freedom to do whatever I want”; rather, the only true freedom is the freedom to act in ways that lead us to the ultimate good, which is God.
In American society, “freedom” is seen as license to do “whatever I want.” In Christianity, “freedom” is the freedom to choose God’s will over our own. Anything else ultimately leads to slavery, destruction and unhappiness. We may not be in physical chains or handcuffs, but we might as well be, considering what sinful and selfish choices end up doing to us. Over time, they drain our spirit, leaving us empty and unfulfilled. Too often, what we consider “doing it my way” rather than God’s way is the reason people are restless, bored, dissatisfied, depressed, lonely, confused, lacking meaning and purpose in life. We think the choice is between good and evil. That is a lie our culture and pop-ular media tells us. The only real choice is to choose what is good. Everything else is slow, spiritual suicide. This and other American ideas greatly affect personal, spiritual, family and Church life. I love being an American, but there are times when our American values conflict with my Judeo-Christian values, and I have to make a choice: Am I an American Catholic or a Catholic American? Does my discipleship in Jesus inform my decision-making first, or does my citizenship and culture influence me first? The Gospel of Jesus Christ should be our first criteria, but the reason the Year of Faith has been called for is because so many people, especially in our devel-oped countries like the United States, do not think about turning to the Church and their Catholic faith for answers when making important moral decisions about their life and family. Many people listen to the voices of popular me-dia much more readily than they do the Church. They may not be getting the information they need, or they do not know where to find it. Some many not know where to look for it. These are issues the Church must address from both sides — the leadership AND the people. It must come from bishops, priests, deacons and pastoral ministers who do everything they can to provide the people with opportunities to overcome their ignorance (believe me, I make it my life’s work to do this and dearly wish I could somehow reach more people), AND it must come from individual Catholics themselves, who consciously take the initiative to pray end educate themselves in whatever ways they can so they can engage the practice of their religion in far more meaningful ways. Religion is just a tool to lead us into a relationship with God and one another. Empty religion leads us nowhere. God wants us to lead rich, full lives.
There is a great hunger in the human heart for communion with God, even if we are ignorant in some ways, even if we marginalize God or put him on a shelf and take him out only when we want favors, even when we have interior conflicts over what it means to be a Catholic American. In our own time, godless people are trying to undermine Christian values and make it difficult, if not impossible, for us to freely practice our Christian faith. Religious freedom is threatened, and there is a clear and present danger when Christians do not plainly and respectfully proclaim their beliefs. If we do not fight for religious freedom in the United States, we may soon not have a Church to attend. The privileges of freely practicing our faith can be taken away in a heartbeat. This week, visit the website of the U.S. Catholic Bishops: www.usccb.org. Find out what the Church teaches about social issues. Take an active part in your neighborhood, parish, community and civic life. Examine the issues, and vote according to your conscience. If we as Christians fail to do this, we have no one to look to but ourselves if our cherished religious freedoms are no more. P. 12
