He makes reference to the Jews’ ancestors who ate manna in the desert. These days we would think primarily of Israel wandering in the desert, but faithful Jews would also have known the story of Elijah that we hear today. Strengthened by food and drink in the desert, the angel of the Lord sends him on his forty-day and forty-night journey (the biblical number for a preparation time). Like the food given to Elijah in the desert, Jesus tells his listeners that he is bread for the life of the world. It is very important that we not stop listening to Jesus after his promise of eternal life—a marvelous promise, but this “reward” is not the only reason we feast on the Bread of Life. We also come to the table to be made strong for the journey of mission, that the whole world might have life in the fullness of Christ. We are compelled, if we have eaten of the bread of life, to go forth in service to all. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time

August 12, 2018 I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever. — John 6:51

FEAST of the ASSUMPTION of MARY

August 15 (Holy Day of Obligation)

MASS SCHEDULE 6:00 PM Vigil

6:30 AM, 8:30 AM & 6:00 PM Feast Day On this day we celebrate our belief that Mary, the Mother of God, was taken to heaven, body and soul, after her earthly life. Because of

Mary’s central place in God’s eternal plan for salvation, her body did not undergo corruption. Mary’s assumption offers us a glimpse of the promises made to us when we were baptized into Christ. We are given the promise that we, too, will enter heaven, body and soul, when Christ returns at the end of time.

In gratitude for God’s gifts we gratefully appreciate: Envelopes (7/29) $ 5238.00 Loose Collection $ 2135.65 Total $ 7473.65 2nd Collection-Mission Co-op Plan $ 3095.00

Thank you for your generosity!

RECTORY OFFICE REQUEST If you are NOT currently using donation envelopes and you would like to request a box set for 2019 please call the rectory office by August 31.

LET’S PRAY FOR OUR SEMINARIANS

In order to support vocations in our diocese, you are asked to add a special prayer for seminarians to your daily prayers. The best way to encourage and support our seminarians is to pray for them.

Prayer for Vocations Loving God, How awesome are your ways! Through your abundant love, you bless us with gifts that can make our world

holy and just. Dwell deep in our hearts that we may know how to share these gifts. Inspire many to respond generously to your call to service in the Church. May the fire of your love direct us on our journey that we may act justly, love tenderly and walk humbly with you. We give you the praise and honor now and forever. Amen. ************************************ Readings for Sunday, August 19: First Reading — Wisdom has built her house; she has dressed her meat, mixed her wine, yes, she has spread her table (Proverbs 9:1-6).Psalm — Taste and see the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 34).Second Reading — Be filled with the Spirit, giving thanks always and for everything (Ephesians 5:15-20).
