“I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the little
ones” (Matthew 11:25) declares Jesus. It recalls Father’s Day and the Nativity of St. John the Baptist near the end of June and our up-coming celebration of the Declaration of Independ-ence. We need the hope, ideals and enthusiasm young people bring who look to the future. They are determined to make a better world for themselves and their children. We also need the witness of patience and valued experience more seasoned adults bring to the world. Good fathers encourage and inspire their children to go to work with courage, putting their tal-ents at the service of others; recognizing how blessed and fulfilling it is to give in faith. At the same time, each child is created a gift of love and an end in his or herself: from the womb, through the end of the jour-ney in this world, and into eternity. Each has a right and duty to recognize the responsibility that comes with the many gifts they have received. The world needs to grow toward the fulfill-ment promised in God. Although it will always strug-gle and labor until the final coming of the Lord and the end of the fallen world as we know it, Jesus says: “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for your-selves” (Matthew 11:28-29). Finding fulfillment and happiness in the mystery of our journey here includes prayerful discernment of how to live in God’s Spirit, the trials that gain experience, and the spiritual and emotional rest and comfort that come even here through knowledge of God’s will and His union with us. As we heard on the Solemnity of the Nativity
of St. John the Baptist, we are called from the womb to carry out this mission.
In Christ, Son of Mary,

In the Gospel today, we hear Jesus say: “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will
give you rest.”
Your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul brings peace to those who are overwhelmed with
life’s burdens.
“O God our creator … through the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society.”
United States Conference of Catholic Bishops “Prayer for Religious Liberty”
Stewardship “The harvest is rich,” Jesus tells the seventy-two in today’s
Gospel, “but the workers are few.” The situation is the same today. How can I help with God’s harvest? Am I called into the field? Am I one who could provide food or shelter or wages to
those who toil in the fields of the Lord? See Luke 10:2

Meals on Wheels Thanks St. Mary Parish!
A big thank you to all who participated in the June Delivery Program for MOW. There were many “regulars” as well as newcomers, and it seems as if many enjoyed this minis-try! This is a vital program for our homebound friends, and it is dependent on volunteer drivers. It is a fairly easy ministry, requiring about 1½ hr. from start to finish… Perhaps you are called to serve? If interested in continuing to deliver occasionally, con-tact Colleen at The VAC, 815-758-3932. If interested in learning more about MOW, call Chris Hacker at 815-758-5625. Again, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your generosity of time and spirit! Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one an-other with whatever gift each of you has received. Whoever speaks must do so as one speaking the very words of God; who-ever serves must do so with the strength that God supplies, so that God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ.

ST. MARIA GORETTI Feast Day - July 6
She was born on a small farm near Ancona, Italy, in 1890. Pope Pius XII called her “the St. Agnes of the 20th century.” The third of seven children, she was, in the words of her mother, “happy, good, openhearted, without whim, but with a sense and seriousness beyond her years, and never disobedi-ent.” Her father died when she was nine, and she helped out with the younger children and the house work while her mother ran the farm. She received her First Communion at age eleven and strove with all her strength to be better each day. Six months later, she was severely tried for her Faith. The Goretti family shared a home with the partner of their father and his son, Alexander, a wicked-minded youth who began making sinful advances toward Maria. She repelled them. Finally he attacked her, but again she resisted him with all her strength, crying out repeatedly: “No, it’s a sin. God does not want it .” He was overwhelmed with fear and anger and began to strike her blindly with a long dagger, and several blows passed through her body. She was rushed to the hospital and surgeons worked feverishly to save her life, but it soon became evident that nothing could be done. The next morning she was given Communion. She was asked what she thought of her attacker. She replied clearly that she forgave him, that she would pray for his repent-ance, and that she wished to see him in heaven. She died on July 6, 1902. Her death profoundly moved the people of Italy and stirred worldwide notice. Her attacker was sen-tenced to thirty years in prison. Her prayers for her murder-er were heard and answered. After eight years of unrepent-ant imprisonment, Alexander had a complete change of heart. He was released for good behavior after twenty-seven years. He quickly went to Maria’s mother to beg for-giveness and then he became a Capuchin laybrother. He gave evidence at the canonical inquiry about Blessed Maria and lived to see her canonized. On July 25, 1950, she was raised to sainthood by Pope Pius XII, with her mother, brothers, and sisters present, a unique event in the history of the Church.
