Dear Friends, Jesus says in today’s Gospel from Matthew: “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” We know these words. We hear them often. But do we really ponder them, pray about them, and challenge ourselves to truly do what the Lord asks? Even in the Scriptures we hear that not everyone was able to accept these words and left Jesus. They could no longer abide by His words. We all have experienced taking up the cross, our cross, for Jesus. We have had to stand up for what is right, to witness our faith in God, to defend someone being berat-ed because of their looks or background or status. Let us pray that our faith may continue to grow stronger so that we can be good disciples of the Lord. May the grace of the Holy Spirit guide us today and always. God bless you. Father Fred

Today’s Second Collection is for Parish Maintenance. Thank you for your support.

Next weekend (Sept. 9 & 10) the second collection is for the Retirement Benefit Trust for Priests of the Dio-cese of Oakland. This is not the same as the December collection for retired religious men and women. The collection next week is to help maintain the existing Trust, which provides priests who have served in the Diocese of Oakland during their retirement. The num-

ber of priests receiving this benefit is growing as more men retire. But not all have put in 35 years of service (the years required to receive full funding). Some priests were ordained later in life. Some priests have come from other dioceses and coun-tries and wouldn’t receive full funding, yet would face the same expenses after retirement that we all do. This collection will assist in keeping the Trust up to meet the needs of the future. This is a wonderful way to show your appreciation for the priests who have dedi-cated their lives to serving you in Mass, in the Sacraments, in counseling, and in many other ways. Please be generous in your donation to this collection next weekend.

Help for the Victims of Hurricane Harvey The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is promoting an emergency na-tional collection to assist dioceses affected by hurricane Harvey. Archbishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles, vice-president of the USCCB, said, “Our hearts and prayers go out to the families that have lost loved ones and to all who have lost homes and businesses along with their sense of peace and normalcy. We also stand with our brother bishops in the region who have the difficult task of providing pastoral care in these most trying times while managing their own losses. Our prayerful and financial support is urgently needed." The office of the Bishop of Oakland is currently organizing an appeal, the details of which will be forthcom-ing in the days to come. We will keep our parishioners informed in case they would like to help in this effort.

Dear Friends, Sadly I need to announce the postponing of this year’s Interna-tional Festival which was scheduled for October 7. Due to sched-uling difficulties, we need to move this event to a future date, hopefully in the Spring. This Festival is one of the best things we do to show our unity and to celebrate our diversity. We do not want to lose this! And hopefully in the coming years we will re-serve the last Saturday in September for the Festival, assuring it always happens without any conflicts. Thank you all for your understanding. Father Fred & Staff

Prayer for Workers O God, to whom all our prayers rise like incense, We thank you for the ability to work And to provide for our families. Assist us in honoring the laborer And providing a fare wage for all laborers. To work brings us purpose and dignity. In work, the laborer honors you, The One who provides everything we need. We ask you to bless all those Who have no opportunity to work And help us to give from our abundance To those who have little. We ask this Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

St. Mary School is back in session and the excitement of a new school year can be felt in each and every classroom. Our outstanding

faculty and staff put all their efforts into preparing curriculum and assem-bling classrooms to welcome our amazing students and their families. Our first day of school gave our FAM-ILY the first glimpse of our school theme: Inspire the Community through Love. What a powerful message for all of us. To give of ourselves and love as Jesus loves; there is no greater gift we can give. We look forward to liv-ing our faith this school year and fol-lowing the example of Christ today and always.

FOLLOWING CHRIST If you’ve ever had an unpleasant but somewhat amusing practical joke played on you, then you have some understanding of how Jeremiah feels today when he tells God “good one—you duped me.” We can almost see him shaking his head with a bit of a rueful smile, but an angry undertone in his voice. In similar fashion, Peter thinks Jesus is “duping” him when Jesus starts to explain that being Messiah means suffering and dying, and being a follower of the Messiah means tak-ing up a cross and doing the same. Jeremiah tries to deny God’s will for him by trying to shut up; Peter—who has just been made the foundation of the church—out and out denies the teaching of Jesus, for which he is named “Satan” today. Fortunately for us, Jeremiah comes to realize that to have the word of God placed in your heart means that it will be futile to try and keep silent, even if it means scorn and derision from those around you. Luckily Peter ultimately returned to the faith he professed in last week’s Gos-pel, and came to understand our need as baptized followers of Christ to fol-low in his way, even when it means following him to our very death.
