“The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.”“The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.”“The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.”“The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.”

This week is the Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Times. The first reading is taken from the book of the prophet Jeremiah. It is an eye opening reading for me in the time that we live. It speaks of the harsh words of the Lord to the shepherds. The first reading is blam-ing the shepherds for misleading the sheep. The reading opens with this ominous statement, “Woe to the shepherds who mislead and scatter the flock of my pasture.” This is truly a heartbreaking statement, yet it is true. Many things have happened in the Church for sixty years. It was not all good. But the Lord did not abandon the Church. As he said two thousand years ago to the apostles, “I will be with you till the end of time.” He is true to his words to this day. God gave to the Church wonderful men and women, who with their steady hands, continued to steer the bark of Peter, in the right direction. The great Pope St. John Paul II came into a very disturbing time in the life of the Church. There was utter confusion among the Catholics, “What they really believed.” Life became a commodity, which can be bought and sold to the highest bidder. Abortion be-came a right. The killing of the innocent babies became a choice. People are in control of life and death. This made them forget who the author of life is. Our great Pope fought vigorously against this pagan idea. It was not easy, but with God’s help he succeeded to open the eyes of young people to the mistake of their own generation. The young people are very much saddened to see their brothers and sisters were sacrificed to the altar of selfishness and hatred toward life. A great generation of people were lost not by war, but by the evil of abortion. Today the March for Life in Washington DC is filled with young people. Young people are seeing the horrendous effect of abortion in their lives. They are seeing with their own eyes, what abortion does to the society. The people are coming out and telling sad stories of their lives openly and sincerely. Abortion harmed many people and destroyed their lives. We have to give thanks to God for giving us the great Pope John Paul II and helping him to bring the right perspective to life. He was the one who coined the phrase “Choose life.” Following the great Pope, God blessed the church with another great and holy Pope in the person of Benedict XVI. He continued the path, which St. John Paul II started. He worked hard for the right way of celebrating the liturgy. The liturgy is the greatest prayer of the Church. The right liturgy is important. The wrong liturgy plac-es man in competition with God. In the wrong liturgy, man takes center stage not God. You remember in many places the tabernacle was moved to give space to the presider’s chair. When you entered the Church, the first thing people saw, was this empty chair. The reform of the reform, as Pope Benedict called it, made lots of pro-gress. People once again began to worship God in the right way. God is the center of our liturgy and not the presider of the liturgy. The things that happened in the Church, was most of the time with the knowledge of its shepherds. They were not interested in the life of the Church, but they are interested in their own agenda. There was truly on open revolt against the very Church of Jesus among some of the Catholics. Let us go back to the first reading and see what Jesus says about the situation in the lives of Israel. Here God makes a strong statement, “You have scattered my sheep and driv-en them away. You have not cared for them, but I will take care to punish your evil deeds. I myself will gather the remnant of my flock from all the lands to which you have driven them.” It is the love of God that made him say, “His heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd.” God will be always our true shepherd. “Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known

that anyone who fled to thy protecon, implored thy help, or sought

thine intercession was le unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly

unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before

thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate,

despise not my peons, but in thy mercy hear and answer me.” Amen
