TM the Collar Grapes thatarenative to theUnitedStatesaregood foronlyonething,grapejuice.Theydonotproducegoodwine.Ontheother hand, many grapes native to Europe, Sangiovese, forexample, one of the primary grapes that is used for Chianti, are excellent for producing wine. There are stories ofnineteenth-century Italian immigrants coming to Californiawith theirgrapevinecuttings, so theywouldbeable toplanttheir own native grapes in this NewWorld and have wine.TheytendedthesecuttingsonboardshipsandthenacrosstheAppalachianrange, theGreatPlains, andtheRockyMountainsbefore inally settling on the West Coast. These grapevinecuttings were precious reminders of the land, culture, andpeople the immigrants left behind; and these same cuttings, properly transplanted, cared for, andpruned, wouldprovidelife andhappiness in this, theNewWorld. And it turnedoutthat California’s climate,NapaValley in particular, was idealfor growing grapes thatwould produce some of theworld’sbestwines.WecanimaginesomethingofthiswhenJesussaysthatheistheVine.IntypicalJohanninefashion,wehavehereno parable about the kingdom of God being like a vineyard.FortheFourthGospel,JesusistheVine!HegoesastepfurthertosaythattheFatheristhevinegrower.Forusandourimageabove, perhaps the Father is the immigrant who brings thepreciousvinetotheNewWorld,readytoplantinfertilesoil.Jesusremindsusofthevinegrower’srole.Notonlydoesthevine grower ensure its viability, but he prunes branches toproduce fruit, and cuts away those that do not produce anyfruit.Inastarkvisionoftheendtime,Jesustakesyetanothersteptosay that thosebranches thathavebeencutawaywillbethrownintothe iretobeburned.Suchapocalypticimagesarerareinthisgospel,thoughtheyappearmorefrequentlyinMatthew.Asvinegrower, theFather tendshisprecious vinemuch like the immigrantbringingnativecuttings to theNewWorld.Oncetransplanted,therealworkbegins.Wherearewein the metaphor?
