READINGS FOR THE WEEK Aug. 13 - Aug 19
Ratchetupthetension is aphrase sometimesusedwhendiscussionsaregettingheated,whenonesideortheotherrefuses to backdown, orwhen someonedrives home theargument relentlessly. Often we can shy away fromratcheting up the tension as it can make peopleuncomfortable.And thosewhodonot shyaway fromthiscanbeseenasboorish,overzealous,orsimplyhotheaded.But in this story, Jesus is not afraid to ratchet up thetension. He is not afraid to deal with any rami icationsthereof. In the gospel reading from last week the peoplewanted Jesus to give them a sign like the manna in thedesert.InresponseJesusclaimedthathewastheBreadofLife come down from heaven. This week he goes evenfurther.Notsurprisinglythecrowdsarehesitanttobelievesuchaclaim.Theyknowhis familyoforigin. Jesus’ fatherwas Joseph. How could Jesus claim to have come downfromheaven? Jesusdoesnotbackdown.Hedoesnotsay,
Oh,youmisunderstood. Iwasspeakingmetaphorically.Instead,hetakes ittothenext level,as itwere.HequotesIsaiah:TheyshallallbetaughtbyGod. Both he and thecrowdsunderstoodthemeaning.Hewasplacinghimselfonparwith God or, rather, even equating himself with God.Thiswas becoming toomuch. Jesus, whose father Josephtheyknew,couldnotwithastraightfaceimplythathehadcome down from heaven, teaching the people, in effectclaiming to ful ill the passage from Isaiah saying theywouldbetaughtbyGod!Ratherthanbackdown,Jesusgoesanotherstepfurther.Hestates latlyandperhapsboorishlythat their ancestors ate manna and died. The peoplewantedJesustoperformsomesignakintothemanna,butin fact those who ate the manna died in any case. WhatJesusprovidesgiveseternallife.HehimselfistheBreadofLife,comedownfromheaven.Andasa inaltrumpcard,heplaysthelinethatratchetsituponceagain:The bread he gives is his very lesh.With Jesus’willingness to go onestep further followedbyanotherandyetanother,wewillnot be surprised to learn that many of his followers willabandon him. What he was teaching and preaching wasbeyond credibility. This upstart preacher from Galilee,whosefatherwassomebodyknowninthecommunity,wasdelusionalifheclaimedhecamedownfromheavenastruebread, which is his very lesh. Somebody preaching thattodaywould likelybe ridiculedand summarilydismissed,whichiswhatwillultimatelyhappentoJesus.
