Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles!!

"But who do you say that I

am?" What if Jesus asked

this question today? How

would people respond?

Some might focus on his

role in history, saying, "You are the founder of the Christian religion." Others might

describe his work: "You are a teacher, a healer, a spir-

itual guide." Perhaps there are some who would identi-

fy him by his character, suggesting that he is a loving,

generous, compassionate, and forgiving role model.

But surely some would answer in the same spirit as Pe-

ter in today's reading, "You are the Christ, the Son of

the living God." This is a profound statement of faith. To call Jesus "the

Christ" is to profess that he is the Messiah, the long-

awaited savior of God's people. To call him the Son of

God is to profess that he is not only a miracle-working

man, he is also divine. Among the disciples being ques-

tioned, Peter was the one who responded with this re-

al insight into Jesus' identity. "Flesh and blood has not

revealed this to you," Jesus replied to Peter, "but my heavenly Father." In other words, recognizing Jesus as

our savior and our God isn't something we figure out

on our own. It's a spiritual insight that comes through

faith.

Jesus did many amazing things while he walked the

earth. He gave us a powerful example of love and for-

giveness and he offered us teachings that help direct

our lives. But we are called to see even more than these historical facts; as Christians we are called to rec-

ognize him as the Christ. Through faith, we know who

Jesus really is: our God and our Savior. Thus, we are

called to give him more than our respect and admira-

tion as a remarkable man. We are called to give him

our full allegiance and to worship him as the one true

God.

Peter's Pence 2018!!

“A little mercy makes the world less cold and more just.” Pope Francis, !Angelus, March 17, 2013!!

!

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, !!

This weekend our diocese will take up the Peter’s Pence Collection. Our participation supports the charitable work of Pope Francis as he reaches out to those who are marginalized and suffering around the globe. By supporting this collection, you join the Holy Father in bringing a little more mercy into the world. Pope Francis challenges us to look at those around us with the eyes of mercy. At a Papal Audience he said, “We encounter so many weary and oppressed people today . . . And how is our heart? Is it merciful? And our way of thinking and acting, is it inclusive?” (Jubilee Audience, Nov. 12, 2016). I invite you to reflect on how you feel moved to an-swer the call to mercy. In Iraq, many people still live a night-mare of war and violence. This has left many displaced, includ-ing young people in the midst of their studies. Without an edu-cated population, it will be difficult for the country to gain sta-bility. Thanks to support from this collection, the Archdiocese of Erbil, in Iraqi Kurdistan, has received funding for 10 schol-arships for young displaced persons. With this help, the stu-dents can complete their university education and move for-ward with the hope of rebuilding their country. Let us join with our brothers and sisters in faith from around the globe to help Pope Francis reach the marginalized in our world. I ask that you prayerfully consider how you can best support the collec-tion this year. For more information about the good works that result and the response over past years, please visit the website of the U. S. Conference of Catholic Bishops at www.usccb.org/peters!pence. !!!!!!!!!! Thank you for considering how you can respond to the call to be a “Witness of Charity” by your pray-ers, your spreading the word about this good work, and by your financial support. !!

With every prayerful best wish, I remain, !Sincerely yours in Christ, !! !Most Reverend Robert J. McManus, !S.T.D. Bishop of Worcester

GOSPEL MEDITATION ENCOURAGE DEEPER !

UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE!

!

June 24, 2018 The Nativity of Saint John the Baptist!!

!

Tiny fingers and toes. A little yawn. A loud cry. An infant wrapped in swaddling clothes. "What will this child be?" It is a question every parent asks time and time again. As first steps are taken, as personalities emerge, as a child shows interest in reading or drawing or climbing, the question is on our lips. "What will this child be?" This question is asked as John the Baptist is born. Will he be a priest like his father? Does his strange, unexpected name signal a departure from that inheritance? Could Elizabeth and Zechariah ever have predicted what would be?!Under the tutelage of his priestly father, John "became strong in spirit." As an adult, John would retreat into the desert to preach repentance. He would attract a large following and eventually attract the attention of the rulers of the day. He would point out the adulterous ways of King Herod and would find himself in prison. Eventually, he would be beheaded. But today, he is a child, an infant newly born.!On this special feast, we're reminded of the great humility required of parents. The character formation, the discipline and encouragement, the violin lessons and soccer practices ? every parental effort is subjected to the decisions of the child them self. Even children on a sure track by high school graduation trans-form under life's circumstances. Entrusting our children to God can be incredibly intimidating. "What will this child be," especially when that transformation lies outside of my control? John the Baptist's story might not have ended as his par-ents imagined. But he is celebrated as the greatest of the prophets, as the one who prepared the way for the Messiah. Here is the hope of all Christian parents that our children would be raised in such a way that when people meet them, they meet Jesus Christ.!!
