Salt for the Ascension

Overloaded with facts and figures… differing opinions, multiple solutions; ideologies and politics and people at odds… Just what does one believe? And that was BEFORE COVID-19! Today’s reading from the Acts of the Apostles captures it all with the disciples staring up in disbelief! They saw, but had their doubts (not an unusual response). The economic, medical, social, emotional and spiritual landscape of these days wears on us all. We are rightly concerned and wrestle with our own disbeliefs as we try to make the best navigating these days. We really need the message of Ephesians: “May the eyes of your hearts be enlightened, that you may know what is the hope that

belongs to his call, what are the riches of glory in his inheritance and what is the surpassing greatness of his power for us who believe.”

In the Ascension Jesus says it’s our turn. TOGETHER we pray that the eyes of our

hearts be opened. TOGETHER we pray that we witness to the

common good. TOGETHER we remember that we are never

alone and have the Holy Spirit to plead our cause.

We ARE and Easter people and Alleluia IS our song.

Amen!

Congratulations to Father John as he celebrates the 36th Anniversary of his Ordination on Tuesday, May 26. Thank Father John for all he has done for our Pastorate,

particularly during this difficult time of the pandemic. Father John, you continue to remind us that we are community, even though we are not able to gather in physical community at this time. Congratulations and blessings as you celebrate this special occasion. We are blessed to have you as our Pastor.

Accepting New Counseling Clients via Telehealth—If you know of anyone struggling with their brain health during this time, Catholic Charities Counseling is accepting new clients from any location in the Archdiocese. The telehealth process allows counselors to meet with clients via computer or other devices. Counseling provides individuals, couples, and families the ability to work out their challenges before they become a crisis, helping to maintain emotional health and strengthen relationships. Call 800-772-2758 for more information. Tax Update—If you do not itemize your deductions, you are allowed to deduct up to a total of $300 in qualified charitable contributions on your taxes. This applies to the "tax-filing unit." For example, married taxpayers who file a joint return and do not elect to itemize deductions can deduct the $300. Check with your tax preparer for details.

Faith vs. Fear—It is two months of practicing social distancing, staying at home and wearing a mask when out and about. It is hard to look back on where we have been and maybe even harder to look ahead to

where we are going. With the Easter Season coming to a close, it is a good time to review the images presented by Father John so we come closer to 20/20 vision!! Some of the ways Father John shared with us are listed below. Let’s take another look at them.

w Temptation: Just as Jesus was tempted by the devil, we face daily temptations. How do we face them? Some are easier to ignore than others. Do you ask for help to reject them?

w Transfigure: How have you changed or re-figured yourself? What about changes due to Covid-19? This virus has certainly altered our normal, everyday life. Who can help us and how do you help others?

w Thirst: Do you ask for the spring of water welling up to eternal life? You will not be thirsty again if you ask for the water from Jesus, the Savior of the world.

w Blindness: Jesus opened the eyes of the blind man. Do we have 20/20 vision or is your eyesight blurry and distorted?

w Untie us: Are we filled with fear and uncertainty that keeps us focused on ourselves. Untie those knots that are barriers to finding our true self.

w “It is Finished”: the last words of Jesus. He died to save us from our sins. Be filled with gratitude.

w How many of these messages do you remember? Are you trying to achieve 20/20 vision? Joy and peace will come to you as you develop a relationship with Jesus and those around you. These will help us through this difficult time.

Reflection: 2020 Prayer of Lent

by Father John (shortened) “Be thou my vision”

O Lord, that’s easy to say, But much more challenging to live.

“Be thou my vision.” Lord Jesus, you know all and see all.

You know me and still love me. You see all my sins and blind spots

and still forgive me. Deepen my faith to see as you see.

Enlarge my heart to love as you love. “Be thou my vision” Amen

Take a look at the picture. That ’s what 1,358 pounds of items collected looks like. In addition to collecting for the Food Shelf, volunteers also passed out bulletins and palms to parishioners. Thanks to everyone who participated in any way.

A Memorial Day Prayer Heavenly Father, as our nation pauses today to remember those in the military who have given their lives for freedoms we enjoy, we pray you would have us all look to you for strength, comfort and guidance. Be with all who serve in our Armed Forces. Bless them and their families. Grant your loving protection. Let peace prevail among all the nations, O God. Especially let your mercy rest upon our land, even as we acknowledge with thanksgiving your past goodness on this country. If it is your will, preserve the lives of the men and women in uniform as they defend our citizenry. Most of all, we pray that you would turn the hearts of all – military and civilian – to your holy Word where we find the true peace for our sinful souls that surpasses all understanding. Keep us repentant of sin. Move us to know, take hold and treasure grace. In the name of Jesus, our Savior and Your beloved Son, who alone gives this peace and hope for eternity, we pray. Amen.
