Prepare for Lent
In a little over a week, we begin the Lenten season. As we approach this season we are reminded that it is a time of praying, fasting, and almsgiving. This is a good time to look ahead at how you are going to prepare for Lent this year. It is too easy to walk away after Ash Wednesday and maybe give something up, but this year what if you really plan how you would like to spend the season of Lent. This is the time to order some spiritual reading you would like to do. There are many places to look for things to read and keep you on track this Lent. You can go to the Blessed is She web page and order the Lenten devotional: Here, too, is Where We Will Find God. Dynamic Catholic’s site gives you a place to sign up for the Best Lent Ever. When you sign up you will get a daily devotion through email, which will keep you on track.
Plan for time in prayer. We have Adoration every Wednesday evening at 7 PM at St. Cecilia, every Thursday at 7 PM at St. Anthony and the first Friday of the month at SMSJ at 10:30 AM. Plan to pray before the blessed sacrament at least once this Lent.
Plan on going to confession. You can go to the parish web pages and find the different times we offer reconciliation in the region. Pray the Stations of the Cross each week. Also, plan to make it to as many as the Triduum Masses and services that you can this year. If you plan ahead and get it on your calendar, you will be more apt to do the things that you are planning to really prepare for Lent and make this a meaningful season that will help you grow in faith and charity and make it a wonderful Easter.
Amen? Amen.
Studying at the SeminaryAre you are thinking about a new career or a more active role in the parish or community? Are you discerning the Diaconate? Perhaps you are interested in enriching your own faith life? The Athenaeum of Ohio is offering lay theo-logical and ministry formation through our master’s degree and certificate programs. Choose from Master of Arts degrees in Pastoral Ministry, Biblical Studies or Theology. They also offer certificates in Pastoral Ministry at both the master’s and non-degreed levels.
Attend classes at their main campus, 6616 Beechmont Avenue in Mt. Washington or at the satellite location, Mercy-West (non-degreed certificate classes only). Call 231.1200 or email [email protected] or [email protected] to learn more.

1 | ENGAGED COUPLES BLESSING. We had a very nice brunch
with our newly engaged couples that will be getting married this
year at St. Cecilia. Mandy and Mark Milliron made a wonderful
brunch and Sue and Bob Kellison created a wonderful atmosphere
with music and information to help our couples prepare for the
sacrament of marriage.
2 | CANDLEMAS. Each of the parishes had a candlemas procession
at their Masses and we also were able to bless the candles that we will
be using this year for Masses, baptisms and daily devotional votive
candles. It was so nice to be able to celebrate this Mass on its actual
feast day.
3-4 | REST IN PEACE. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for
Elaine Fischer on Wednesday, Jan. 29. She was a long-time parishio-
ner of St. Cecilia and a regular at the 4 PM Mass. A Mass of Christian
burial was celebrated for Judge Tom Nurre on Friday, Feb. 7. He was
also a long-time St. Cecilia parishioner, a Navy Chaplain assistant and
a judge for 44 years. May Elaine and Tom both find peace in heaven.
5 | NEW PARISHIONER MEET AND GREET. I want to thank
Ethan and Carol Schimmoeller for hosting another wonderful eve-
ning to meet and greet our new St. Cecilia parishioners. We had a lot
of fun getting to know so many new people! We are thankful to have
them and hope felt very welcomed by the parish.
6 | CMA SPEAKER. Marty Arlinghaus, who is a parishioner and
the Director of Prison Ministry in our diocese, was the speaker for
the CMA Commitment Sunday at St. Cecilia. He was a really great
witness to his work that is supported by our donations.

Wisdom of the Fathers Evil is evil, even if God turns it to good.
St. John Cassian tells how an earnest monk asked a hard question of the wise abbot Theodore: if dying brings a good person to eternal bliss, how can murdering a good person be a crime?
“Germanus: Well then, if a good man does not only suffer no
evil by being killed, but actually gains a reward from his
suffering, how can we accuse the man who has done him no
harm but good by killing him?
Theodore: We are talking about the actual qualities of
things good and bad, and what we call ‘indifferent,’ and not
about the characters of the men who do these things. No bad or
wicked man should go unpunished because his evil deed was
not able to do harm to a good man. For the endurance and
goodness of a righteous man do no good to the man who is the
cause of his death or suffering, but only to him who patiently
endures what is inflicted on him. And so the one is justly
punished for savage cruelty, because he meant to injure him,
while the other nevertheless suffers no evil, because in the
goodness of his heart he patiently endure his temptation and
sufferings, and so causes all those things that were inflicted
upon him with evil intent to turn out to his advantage, and to
lead him to the bliss of eternal life.” - St. John Cassian,
Conferences, 6.7-8
IN GOD’S PRESENCE, CONSIDER… Am I tempted to justify objectively sinful behavior because it seems to produce good results?
CLOSING PRAYER
Father, purify my life and cleanse my heart from all wickedness, and grant me a pure and undefiled conscience.
Meet Your Candidates & CatechumensMONICA CHANEYFavorite bible verse: She is clothed in strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future.
– Proverbs 31:25Favorite Saint: The Blessed Virgin Mary Why do you want to become Catholic? My husband and I had been church shopping for years and had not
landed anywhere we felt was right. Meanwhile, the St. Cecilia community continually showed up in our life. Eventually, we de-
cided this is where we wanted to place our faith roots as a family.
Catholicism 101: e RCIA ExperiencePlease consider joining us for this week’s Catholicism 101 lesson on Stump the Theologians. (February 19 at 7 PM in the St. Cecilia Commons).
This session will consist of an evening of Q&A with a panel of 2-3 priests, 1-2 seminarians, and 1-2 lay theologians. All ques-tions are on the table. Come, enjoy some refreshments, and take part in the opportunity to ask that question that you’ve always wanted to ask but never got the chance to do so. All questions will be written on paper at the beginning of the session for the sake of confidentiality.
On Tuesday, Feb. 18, Monsignor Lane will lead the Eucharistic Holy Hour at St. Margaret-St. John during which he will give a short talk on mental prayer. The Holy Hour begins at 7 PM.
Give me a sense of humor, Lord, and something to laugh about. – St. Thomas More

Dresser Project 2020For quite a number of years, Saint Cecilia parish has generously contributed to a “dresser project.” Through this project, we collect baby items that will be donated, through Pregnancy Center East, to a mother who has made the choice of life for her unborn child. Many parishioners find this to be a very positive way to express their support for the pro-life movement. This year’s dresser can be found in the church vestibule with a list of suggested items. We are collecting baby items through February 23. The participation of everyone throughout the region is welcome and appreciated!
The Gift of African American Sacred Song In the sixties, Father Clarence Joseph Rivers revitalized Catholic worship, inaugurated a revolution in liturgical music, stirred international interest in the indigenization of Catholic liturgy, and brought new hope, joy, and spirit to millions of Black Americans when he introduced the mel-odies, rhythms, harmonies, symbols and rituals of African American Sacred Song into Roman Catholic worship. His American Mass Program and subsequent compositions and recordings popularized Black music for Catholic worship. His Soulful Worship and The Spirit in Worship analyzed the history, theology, theory and practice of Black sacred song and its appropriateness and effectiveness in Catholic liturgy and worship. Rawn Harbor, Grayson Brown, Eddie Bonnemere, Leon Roberts, and others began to compose for Catholic worship. Black sacred song is soulful song: holistic, participatory, real, spirit-filled and life-giving.
Shared by Black American Christians across time, the heritage of sacred song crosses geographic, socioeconomic and denominational lines through a vast variety of kinds, styles, and forms. – Sister Thea Bowman, F.S.P.A., Ph.D.
