Fr. Paul’s Homily

Bad Example 2 Mc 6:18-31; Lk 19:1-10

(So when it comes to four possibilities: apparent evil, real evil, apparent good, real good, the only good choice is real good.)

7

Today we are reading from the Second Book of Maccabees, and it’s a little bit difficult for us to understand the spiritual meaning of some of these texts. The issue here seems to our mind, in our culture, even our faith and religion, to be trivial: the eating of pork. So we have to keep in mind that for a Jew or a Muslim to eat pork is considered offensive to God. Granted that, now the story takes on a very particular form, and what it does is it contrasts objective evil with the appearance of evil.

Now in the gospels there’s the mirror side of this, the contrast of objective good with the appearance of good. We know that Jesus is absolutely totally against the appearance of good, which he calls hypocrisy. He finds it hateful. He finds it odious. Now the surprise is when it comes to the appearance of evil, that’s just as

hateful and odious. Good is good; the appearance of good is bad. Evil is evil, but the appearance of evil is also bad. This is what is called bad example.

So since the king had ordered all these Jews to eat pork, which is against the law, now this friend says comes forward and saying/says, “Well because of our long acquaintance, we urge you to bring meat of your own providing, then you wouldn’t be objectively doing anything evil, and then you could legitimately eat it and pretend to be eating some meat of the sacrifice prescribed by the king.” But Eleazar saw through this. To give bad example by apparently doing something wrong is just as bad as doing the wrong itself.

So when it comes to four possibilities: apparent evil, real evil, apparent good, real good, the only

good choice is real good. There are no other choices available that are acceptable to someone who has integrity, honesty, sincerity, truthfulness. Everything else is offensive.

Now this is very important in my view because people today have lost, completely almost, the sense of the evil of bad example. This includes parents who speak in a way and behave in a way that they would actually find offensive if their children did it. Doesn’t it occur to them that their children are learning exactly how to talk and how to think and how to act by the example they are giving? And there are many other such examples. So this is a wake-up call that we need to, not only be good in our intentions, but we need to be good in our actions and in the appearance of our actions.

First Friday Adoration & Benediction January 3

Eucharistic adoration is held in the chapel the first Friday of each month following the 8:15 am Mass and Benediction until noon.

This Sunday is the feast of the Holy Family, which comes on the first Sunday after Christmas Day. Today’s feast celebrates how the humanity of Jesus (including his entire family life) has brought saving significance into the daily rhythms of our human family life.

The scriptures offer instruction and encouragement on how to share—within our families, parish families, and the wider human family—the love that God shares with us in Jesus. Selections from Sirach, Psalm 128, and Colossians encourage us to reflect divine love and thus find holiness in all our human relationships. The reading from Matthew’s Gospel offers a living example of love in the actions Joseph took to protect his young family from danger and to nurture them within the larger family of faith of their time.
