2 Fr. Paul’s Message

Dear Families and Friends of St. Margaret Mary,

A Sacrament is a sacred sign instituted by Christ to give grace. Christ instituted sev-en special sacramental signs to communi-cate divine grace to us, the faithful. They are to the soul what food is to the body. Without food the body starves to death, without the sacraments the life of the soul dries up and blows away.

Sacraments are extensions of the In-carnation to bring us to Christ and Christ to us. They are “the front door” to Heaven, to living our human life in a divine way. As in the Gospel of St. John, this divine life begins now but continues eternally.

But we may well ask the question: Do the sacraments actually do things to us? Do they actually change our very being? The answer is simple yet profound. The sacra-ments produce in us “the sacramental char-acter” and “the sacramental character” is “the character of Christ.” Therefore the sac-raments produce in us the character of Christ. One of the central teachings of St. Paul is “putting on Christ.” Receiving the sac-raments is how to do that. Our humanness is what we are but our character is who we are. Receiving the sacraments, the charac-ter of Christ transforms our individual charac-ter. In one sense, we can change our own character because of every free choice we make, as a sculptor chisels away stone. And yet, unless we received grace from God we would never be able to make the right choices, prone as we are to our fallen na-ture, to sinfulness, selfishness and stupidity. Without the grace of the sacraments our O-so-human characters would always give way to the “vanity of vanities” of this world.

The great English writer George MacDonald says that God, like a good father, is “easy to please but hard to satisfy.” He will not be satisfied with us if we are merely justified,

saved and guaranteed Heaven. We must also be sanctified. We must cooperate with our own sanctification. Christ who is called “Savior” not only saved us from the punish-ment due our sins but tells us we must “be perfect, as your Heavenly Father is per-fect” (Mt 5:48). This is what the sacraments do in us: they perfect us in the sense that they make us Christ-like. As we cooperate with grace, the sacraments do their interior work, gradually but powerfully, like the tides. This is why the single most practical answer to the question: How can I become a saint? is the frequent and passionate reception of the Holy Eucharist and Confession.

The sacraments put us into living con-tact with the living Christ. This, of course, begs another question: What happens when one stops going to Mass or deliberately miss-es Mass? Well, except for the legitimate ex-cuses of illness and travel, the person not on-ly incurs serious sin but they are distancing themselves from Christ. In effect we are cut-ting the only Life-line we have, connecting us to God, to others, to ourselves, to reality and to eternal life. In other words, we are not allowing Christ the opportunity to transform our character. And thus we forego entering into the process of perfection which makes us into saints worthy of Heaven.

It is no insult to the six other sacraments to rank the Eucharist greatest. The others contain a certain instrumental power which is a share in in Christ’s power but the Eucha-rist is the greatest sacrament because it con-tains Christ Himself substantially. We do not adore the other sacraments but we do adore Christ in the Eucharist. So, let us think about that the next time we attend Holy Mass or are tempted not to attend!

Estimadas Familias y Amigos de Santa Margarita María,

Un sacramento es un signo sagrado insti-tuido por Cristo para dar gracia. Cristo instituyó siete signos sacramentales especiales para comu-nicar la gracia divina a nosotros, los fieles. Son para el alma lo que es el alimento para el cuerpo. Sin alimentos, el cuerpo muere de hambre, sin los sacramentos, la vida del alma se seca y se es-fuma.

Los sacramentos son extensiones de la En-carnación para llevarnos a Cristo y Cristo a noso-tros. Son "la puerta de entrada" al Cielo, a vivir nuestra vida humana de una manera divina. Co-mo en el Evangelio de San Juan, esta vida divina comienza ahora pero continúa eternamente.

Pero es posible que nos hagamos la pre-gunta: ¿Realmente los sacramentos nos hacen cosas a nosotros? ¿Realmente cambian nuestro propio ser? La respuesta es simple pero profun-da. Los sacramentos producen en nosotros "el carácter sacramental" y "el carácter sacramental" es "el carácter de Cristo". Por lo tanto, los sacra-mentos producen en nosotros el carácter de Cris-to. Una de las enseñanzas centrales de San Pablo es "ponerse en Cristo". Recibir los sacramentos es cómo hacerlo. Nuestra humanidad es lo que so-mos, pero nuestro carácter es lo que somos. Al recibir los sacramentos, el carácter de Cristo transforma nuestro carácter individual. En cierto sentido, podemos cambiar nuestro propio perso-naje debido a cada elección libre que hacemos, ya que un escultor esculpe piedra. Y sin embargo, a menos que recibamos la gracia de Dios, nunca podríamos tomar las decisiones correctas, pro-pensas como somos a nuestra naturaleza caída, a la pecaminosidad, el egoísmo y la estupidez. Sin la gracia de los sacramentos, nuestros personajes humanos siempre darían paso a la "vanidad de las vanidades" de este mundo.

El gran escritor inglés George MacDonald dice que Dios, como un buen padre, es "fácil de complacer pero difícil de satisfacer". No estará satisfecho con nosotros si somos simplemente el Cielo justificado, salvo y garantizado. También debemos ser santificados. Debemos cooperar con nuestra propia santificación. Cristo, llamado

"Salvador", no solo nos salvó del castigo debido a nuestros pecados, sino que nos dice que debemos "ser perfectos, ya que nuestro Padre Ce-lestial es perfecto" (Mt 5:48). Esto es lo que hacen los sacramentos en nosotros: nos perfec-cionan en el sentido de que nos hacen ser seme-jantes a Cristo. Mientras cooperamos con la gra-cia, los sacramentos realizan su trabajo interior, gradual pero poderosamente, como las mareas. Esta es la razón por la que la única respuesta más práctica a la pregunta: ¿Cómo puedo convertirme en santo? es la recepción frecuente y apasionada de la Sagrada Eucaristía y la Confesión.

Los sacramentos nos ponen en contacto vivo con el Cristo viviente. Esto, por supuesto, plantea otra pregunta: ¿Qué sucede cuando uno deja de ir a misa o echa de menos deliberada-mente la Misa? Bueno, a excepción de las legíti-mas excusas de enfermedad y los viajes, la perso-na no solo incurre en pecado grave sino que se aleja de Cristo. En efecto, estamos cortando la única línea de vida que tenemos, conectándonos con Dios, con los demás, con nosotros mismos, con la realidad y con la vida eterna. En otras pa-labras, no le estamos permitiendo a Cristo la oportunidad de transformar nuestro carácter. Y así renunciamos a entrar en el proceso de perfec-ción que nos convierte en santos dignos del Cielo.

No es un insulto a los otros seis sacramen-tos clasificar a la Eucaristía como la más grande. Los otros contienen un cierto poder instrumental que es una participación en el poder de Cristo, pero la Eucaristía es el sacramento más grande porque contiene a Cristo mismo sustancialmente. No adoramos los otros sacramentos, pero adora-mos a Cristo en la Eucaristía. ¡Entonces, pense-mos en eso la próxima vez que asistamos a la Santa Misa, o nos tentemos a no asistir!

Los fariseos andaban muy lejos de imaginarse que con la prueba a que sometían a Jesús plan-teaban una cuestión espinosa, que si a primera vista parece fácil de resolver, no ha seguido el mejor camino en el curso de la historia. Los fa-riseos le hicieron una pregunta de carácter polí-tico. El pueblo de Israel estaba sometido por las armas a un poder extranjero, el imperio ro-mano. Los fariseos le preguntaron a Jesús: ¿debemos o no pagar los impuestos al empera-dor de Roma?

Jesús responde inteligentemente dicien-do que el Estado es una sociedad necesaria en la vida humana, con autoridad para promover el bien común; pero al mismo tiempo, recuerda a los fariseos que hay un Dios personal, fuente y raíz de toda autoridad, Señor de la historia. Esto es lo quiere decir Jesús en su respuesta: “Lo del César devuélvanlo al César, y lo de Dios a Dios”. El evangelio presenta un caso de con-ciencia sobre un tema muy discutido entre los judíos. Los fariseos veían el tributo al César co-mo opuesto a Dios, el único rey de Israel. Los herodianos, partidarios del rey Herodes, cola-boraban con los romanos sin escrúpulos. La res-puesta de Jesús, cualquiera que fuese, tenía que comprometerlo o con los romanos o con los ju-díos nacionalistas y piadosos.

La pregunta de los fariseos iba con mala intención; no buscaban aprender de la respues-ta sino poner en dificultad y atrapar a Jesús. (¿No sucede esto hoy con muchas preguntas que hace la gente especialmente cuando no-católicos hacen preguntas a la gente sencilla? Muchos comentadores del evangelio ven la res-puesta de Jesús como una nueva manera de de-cir que “No se puede servir a dos señores”, y que “hay que obedecer a Dios antes que a los hom-bres”. Unos piensan que Jesús prohíbe mezclar la política con la fe, ya que son dos cosas bien distintas aunque entrelazadas; pero hasta en la política hay que dar a Dios lo que es de Dios porque él es el Señor de todo.

Hay quienes creen que Jesús, contra los fariseos, afirma que el César tiene su propia es-fera, aunque limitada. Otros creen que Jesús afirma los derechos “inalienables” de Dios que es el Señor de todo, hasta de la política y de los políticos: a los políticos se les debe obedecer

como a instrumentos de Dios, pero sólo cuando mandan o deciden “cosas buenas”. El problema se agrava al tratar de decidir cuáles son “buenas”, o cuando algunos políticos se consi-deran a sí mismos instrumentos de Dios, atribu-yéndose los mismos derechos que Dios.

El significado más probable de la famosa frase de Jesús hay que verla a la luz del contexto evangélico en que se escribió: la narración evan-gélica es parte de una serie de conflictos de Je-sús con sus enemigos y de los conflictos de la iglesia naciente con los dirigentes judíos. En los conflictos con los judíos, Jesús suele acabar con una frase acusatoria, como lo vimos en los evan-gelios de las semanas pasadas. En este caso, Je-sús no estaría dando un principio general y uni-versal para regular la relación de la religión con la política, ni tampoco estaría respondiendo con una frase general ambigua que cada cual pudie-ra interpretar a su modo; Jesús respondería personalmente y al hombre a un error de sus interrogadores. Ellos le preguntaron sobre “pagar/dar” el tributo al César; Jesús les res-ponde hablando de devolver al César y a Dios lo que les pertenece; el dinero es del César, el pue-blo es de Dios. Jesús acusa a los fariseos de aceptar y usar el dinero del César, paguen o no el tributo, porque realmente eran más esclavos del dinero que del César. Si fueran tan religiosos como se creían, devolverían ese dinero al César; también deberían devolver el pueblo a Dios, ya que el pueblo le pertenecía a Dios. Los fariseos se habían convertido en esclavos del dinero del César y habían esclavizado al pueblo de Dios con sus leyes y exigencias.

Reflexión.

Debemos de dar a Dios lo que es de Dios. “Busquen primero el Reino de Dios y su justicia, y todo lo demás se les dará por añadidura”. ¿Qué es lo de Dios? Pues, todo: nosotros y las cosas de este mundo. El es el Creador de todo y a él debe retornar todo lo que salió de sus manos.

SAFEGUARDING GOD’S CHILDREN

All adults who are volunteering in the parish are required to take a Virtus class called Pro-tecting God’s children. This is a three hour class that is offered at the parish and is very informative. If you are volunteering in the parish and have not yet taken the class or you took the class more than four years ago, you will need to take the class. The morning Bible Study Group meets eve-ry Thursday (except for holidays and vaca-tions) from 10-11:30 a.m. in the St. Joseph Center. The Group, which is led by Fr. John, is continuing its study of St. Paul’s Let-ter to the Ephesians (chapters 5 and 6). All are welcome to join, even if you have missed previous meetings or have never studied the Bible before. Please bring a Bi-ble, or purchase a Bible for $10 at the first session that you attend. If you have any questions, please contact Fr. John at the parish office.

FR. JOHN’S BIBLE STUDY GROUP

Many contemporary Christians believe Je-sus was the Messiah, but they don’t neces-sarily know why they believe he was the Messiah, much less why his first followers thought he was the long-awaited king of Israel. There are dozens of passages in the Old Testament that are interpreted as pointing to Jesus as the Messiah, but, when we turn to the Gospels, we find Jesus re-peatedly referring to himself and his mis-sion in terms of several prophecies from the book of Daniel. Challenge yourself to try to understand ancient Scripture from the perspective of Jesus! The evening Bible Study group will begin again soon (starting date, day, and time will be determined later).
