The Blessing We Receive The blessing we experience in Christ Jesus is proclaimed in Numbers as the special blessing for the people of Israel. They and we are to be blessed by the invocation of God’s loving kindness, the shining glory of God’s face turned to-ward us in love, not away from us in anger. We are blessed by God’s own peace! Our wish and our hope are fulfilled in this blessing, which is made visible in the coming of Jesus. In Jesus, the image of the invisible God, God’s face is shown to us and God’s presence is made known to us in faithful and loving kindness.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

LITURGY MATTERS The Arrangement and Ornamentation of

Churches for the Celebration of the Eucharist General Principles: Part 1

For the celebration of the Eucharist, the People of God are normally gathered together in a church or, if there is no church or if it is too small, then in another respectable place that is nonetheless worthy of so great a mystery. Therefore, churches or other places should be suitable for carrying out the sacred action and for ensuring the active participation of the faithful. Moreover, sacred buildings and requisites for divine worship should be truly worthy and beautiful and be signs and symbols of heavenly realities. Consequently, the Church constantly seeks the noble assis-tance of the arts and admits the artistic expressions of all peoples and regions. In fact, just as she is intent on preserv-ing the works of art and the artistic treasures handed down from past centuries and, in so far as necessary, on adapting them to new needs, so also she strives to promote new works of art that are in harmony with the character of each succes-sive age. On account of this, in appointing artists and choos-ing works of art to be admitted into a church, what should be looked for is that true excellence in art which nourishes faith and devotion and accords authentically with both the mean-ing and the purpose for which it is intended. All churches should be dedicated or at least blessed. Ca-thedrals and parish churches, however, are to be dedicated with a solemn rite.

Treasures From Our Tradition “Octave” comes from the Latin word for “eight,” and since eight is one step be-yond seven, the number of days in a week, it has long been seen as a symbol of perfection, completion, and new begin-nings. Early Christians called Sunday the “eighth day,” since it was the day after the Sabbath and a day of resurrected life, the Lord’s Day. By the seventh century, people regarded the eight days after East-er Sunday as one great day, an octave, one glorious feast when people were for-bidden to fast or kneel. In the seventh century, Pentecost acquired an Octave, too. Christmas didn’t claim the honor of a continuous feast, but it did get an Octave Day. January 1 is the oldest Marian feast, the Octave of Christmas. It was originally a feast of the motherhood of Mary, alt-hough for centuries until 1969 it was called the Feast of the Circumcision. Our reformed calendar follows the earlier tra-dition of celebrating Mary as Mother of God. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

DID YOU KNOW? Cell Phone Apps Allow for Hiding Photos and Messages A review of a young person’s cell phone text messages may provide a parent or caring adult with information such as who your child talks to, where they are going, and what they’re doing. Unfortunately, all of that may be in the past. Today, some new cell phone text messaging services keep cell phone texting activity increasingly private. In order to protect young people, one must stay current and re-connect with ever changing technology. For a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Vanishing, Self-Destructing Texting, and Electronic Communication,” email [email protected] or call 213-637-7227.

Jesus’ Divine Mercy for Everyone

Appreciate the Gift of the Christ Child. In His love and mercy, He be-came man; first coming to us as a little baby then remaining with us in the Eu-charist. As an infant, He chose a Moth-er to share with us and to intercede for us. When I did take Him in my arms, He cuddled up close to my bosom and said, It is good for Me to be close to your heart Although You are so little, I know that You are God. Why do You take the appearance of such a little baby to commune with me? Because I want to teach you spiritual childhood. I want you to be very little, because when you are little, I carry you close to My Heart, just as you are holding Me close to your heart right now. (Diary, 1481)

Let us support our families, our sick and dying, and our priests through our daily merciful prayers and acts of good-ness and kindness.
