Lent is a time of darkness. Darkness comes in our days this time of year. Our struggles with Jesus’ death can feel like wandering in darkness. Confronting our own sin and brokenness is living with the shadow side of ourselves. It is an uncomfortable time in the church calendar. We have shifted from the light of Epiphany to the darkness of Lent. And, we begin the difficult work of Lent - learning how to live in discomfort. As adults, we have learned to live with the discomfort of darkness because darkness is part of life. Sure, going into that

darkness may mean meeting an unfriendly dog, tripping over a toy and getting hurt or getting lost, but we learn things to help make it not so scary. Bring a flashlight, don’t go into the dark alone. But how do we live “in” discomfort. For 40 days, 40 nights, just like Jesus in the desert, we don’t just live with discomfort, we are called to live discomforted.

The darkness of racism, sexism, ableism, classism and the list goes on is part of our lives and I know in the last year there were times when I didn’t know what to do as I lived in this dark-ness. I just wanted the pain and anger to be lifted, but that pain was real and necessary. As a mother of a black son, I feel pain knowing the power of prejudice that exists in this country every day. As a lesbian, I grieve for those GLBT teens that are homeless, or worse, dead because of fear and hatred of the other.

Nobody, just like the toddler afraid of the dark, wants to live discomforted, but we are called to discover how to live discomforted – especially as oppression, violence and in-justice are part of our daily life. The scripture 1 Corinthians 12 reminds us that “if one part suffers, every part suffers with it.” Suffering is not the goal of life, but we cannot deny this part of the journey. Even Jesus asked for the cup to pass by in the garden of Gethsemane, but he was denied.

How did Jesus live in the darkness? How did he not get swallowed up by it? How do we learn to live and honor our pain, but not let it overtake us? Where is the strength that God has provided you? What reminds you to trust that God will be with you in the darkness? Where have you experienced darkness and found your way out of it?

The dark is scary for young children. With tears in their eyes, they cling to a trusted adult and with quivering voice say,

“don’t make me go in there.” Lord God, you offer to us this

“acceptable time” to recover a sense

of what life meansand to be

reconciled to youand to our neighbor.

Grant that we may walk together, day by day,

in the footsteps of Christ toward the paschal feast of joy.

On its surface, this text from 3 John may not seem much more than a simple greeting at the beginning of a letter, but on a deeper level, it speaks to a theme found throughout scripture: that health, both of body and soul, is desired for us, both by God and ourselves. Indeed, in the Gospel of John, Jesus tells his disci-ples that he came that we “may have life, and have it abundantly.” A key part of this abundant life is health – wellness of body, mind, spirit, and soul, so that we may fully live into

the life that God has given us.Lent is a season that invites us to

reexamine our relationship with God, both as individuals and as a community. This Lent, St. Luke’s as a parish will explore ways in which healthy living is part of our holy experience with God. As we encourage you to participate in these opportunities that will promote health of body, mind, and spirit, we do so remembering that such healthy living can empower us to fulfill God’s purpose for us – to love God, love one another, and love ourselves.

Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health,

as it goes well with your soul. 3 John 1:2

Couplehood as a Spiritual Path | Linda and Louis McLeod Jan 31, Feb 7, 14We were created to be in relationship and we know how difficult it can sometimes be to embody love in our committed love relationships or marriages. This class will look at some of the reasons it is so easy to become disconnected from our partner and ways to intentionally enhance the connection and joy we desire. This class is taught by Linda and Louis McLeod who have presented workshops for couples for the past 24 years.

Good Old Fashioned Bible Study | Parkins Room |WeeklyThat you May Believe: The Gospel of John - Join us as we explore this gospel’s spiritually attuned, stunningly beautiful insights into the nature of Jesus and the meaning of faith. Continues weekly through the spring.

Adult Inquirer’s Class|The Rev. Dan Matthews This class is intended for adults who are seeking to explore and deepen their faith by preparing for adult Confirmation and/or Baptism, which will be held at St. Luke’s on May 15. Other pro-spective members of St. Luke’s, newcomers with questions and even long-time parishioners interested in a “refresher” are also welcome to attend.

Examen[ing] our Relationship to Food | Audrey Hindes Feb 14, 21Examen is a spiritual practice of finding God in our daily lives. In this two-part series, we will practice this ancient form of prayer to gain greater discernment in our relationship to food. Over time, we can learn to approach our cooking and eating habits with a spirituality that carries over into the rest of our lives.

Lent thru Lens: Mind, Body and Spirit|The Rev. Dennis PattersonFeb 14, 21, 28, March 13 Using the Gospel lessons for each Sunday during Lent, partici-pants will read scriptures and offer interpretations of the reading through their own documentary photography. Participants will also have the opportunity to learn basic camera techniques. All levels of “camera users” are welcome.

Healthy Living/Holy Lent: Exercising in Place - Why and How Early and Medieval Christian Practices Still Help us ThriveBobbi Patterson | Feb 28Exploring the connections between life-style choices and con-text or place, early Christian communities developed “exercise regimes” for healthy living rooted in a range of activities from gardening, to walking, to prayer. Medieval teachers, like Teresa of Avila, built on these “workouts” broadening exercise types and intentions. This session will explore various “exercise re-gimes” worthy of contemporary commitment (yours and mine) to faith-bearing health.

Stories of Recovery | Shane Phillips and Mary Ann Phillips March 6Come and hear one family’s story of addiction and recovery. Shane Phillips, a St. Luke’s parishioner in long-term recovery from drug and alcohol addiction, will share his story of recovery and discuss how addiction affects people from all walks of life. His mother, parishioner Mary Ann Phillips, will also be present to par-ticipate in a Q & A about the process of family recovery. Come to learn more about addiction, recovery, and what you can do to cre-ate recovery-friendly environments within St. Luke’s and beyond.

What Will We Be Doing?A pilgrimage is an opportunity to explore one’s relationship with God in new, different, and eye-opening ways, encouraging the pilgrims to have their spirituality and faith stretched and challenged by new experiences. There will be opportunities for praying (both in groups and as individuals), journaling, singing, talking, listening, and much more. The connection to faith will be obvious for some of our activities, such as visiting chapels and having daily prayer; in others, pilgrims will be encouraged, and perhaps challenged, to find what the faith connection is in other activities.

Many of our activities will be closely connected with natural settings. We’ll visit sacred spaces around Arizona, explore nat-ural attractions such as the Grand Canyon and Red Rock State Park, encounter Native American traditions and culture, and in all of it we’ll be looking for God.

Where Will We Be Staying? For most of the week, we’ll be staying on campus at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona.

As with all St. Luke’s youth events, we do not want money to prohibit anyone from participating. Please contact The Rev. David Wagner to discuss options.
