Do not be afraid to bend yourself down before God especially, and also to the angels and saints, our intercessors and patrons, and simply be pious. Man was made to be pious. This is the essence of religion, without which we are empty shells: to give due reverence to God. The sin of our first parents came from trying to be the opposite of pious: self-sufficient self-gods. That was defiance of due piety. But we can drift into the same emptiness of life by neglect of piety and devotion, neglect of fostering the habits of devotion. Consider the benefits of devotion, and then consider the downside of being – not impious or wickedbut slothful and haphazard and lukewarm. How did our Lord describe the fate of the tepid? It wasnt good. If you are hesitant about the notion of piety, and what you know is going to be the result – giving up things that are incompatible with true piety – here is something from Benedict XVIs sermon for his inaugural Mass in 2005. Are we not perhaps all afraid in some way? If we let Christ enter fully into our lives, if we open ourselves totally to Him, are we not afraid that He might take something away from us? Are we not perhaps afraid to give up something significant, something unique, something that makes life so beautiful? Do we not then risk ending up diminished and deprived of our freedom? And once again the Pope said: No! If we let Christ into our lives, we lose nothing, nothing, absolutely nothing of what makes life free, beautiful and great. To develop a habit, and being pious and devout is a habit, start small. First, examine your conscience daily, in the evening, looking not just for sins you committed, but also how you sinned by omission. That is where we ferret out our negligence in regard to the virtue of religion, negligence in respect to God and to neighbor. Second, during the day, silently to yourself, say a brief prayer - Jesus, meek and humble of heart: Make my heart like unto Thine. That just drips with in-your-face piety, doesnt it? That little prayer has it all. And no one need know you have ever said it, unless you are reciting the Litany of the Sacred Heart...another beautiful experience. Third, find out opportunities for public devotions and start attending. Never mind that they are unfamiliar. Just go! ~ Adapted from June and the Sacred Heart of Jesus: Do not be afraid to be pious

Glory to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit: To God who is, who was, and who is to come

The month of June is traditionally dedicated to foster devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. An opportunity to give consideration to your own devotional practices - don’t be afraid to be pious! We lose nothing in being devout and we gain ineffable benefits. Consider the benefits of devotion, and then consider the downside of being – not impious or ‘wicked’ – but slothful and haphazard and lukewarm. How did our Lord describe the fate of the tepid? It wasn’t good. If you are hesitant about the notion of piety, and what you know is going to be the result – giving up things that are incompatible with true piety – here is something from Benedict XVI’s sermon for his inaugural Mass in 2005.

‘Are we not perhaps all afraid in some way? If we let Christ enter fully into our lives, if we open ourselves totally to Him, are we not afraid that He might take something away from us? Are we not perhaps afraid to give up something significant, something unique, something that makes life so beautiful? Do we not then risk ending up diminished and deprived of our freedom?’ And once again the Pope said: ‘No! If we let Christ into our lives, we lose nothing, nothing, absolutely nothing of what makes life free, beautiful and great.’

Second, during the day, silently to yourself, say a brief prayer - “Jesus, meek and humble of heart: Make my heart like unto Thine.” That just drips with in-your-face piety, doesn’t it? That little prayer has it all. And no one need know you have ever said it, unless you are reciting the Litany of the Sacred Heart...another beautiful experience. This week, we welcome the month of June with its beautiful sunny days! So far, 2018 has gone by quickly and has been a busy time for our parish - this is wonderful! We are an active and involved presence in our community and in our families’ lives. Please check the bulletin regularly for upcoming events as the month of June will be an eventful time as well. On Wednesday, we begin our 9-day Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus - a prayer of hope, reminding us that Jesus is always with us. Let us focus on the love and joy of our faith during this month dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. I am happy to announce that we will be having a Bible Camp this summer during the week of July 9 to July 13 for children in grades 1 to 6. More details will be available shortly. Please call the parish office if you are interested. We thank our Music Ministry for their work in preparing an outdoor Mass for our parish on Saturday July 28 at 6 pm. Volunteers are needed for that day...please help if you are available! And, lastly, I will be leading a pilgrimage to the Holy Land from February 22 to March 2, 2019. Please see me if you are interested in joining me for this wonderful opportunity. Detailed information is available on flyers at the back of the church. May the blessings of St. Luke be upon us!

Father Jerry

Glory be to the Father,

who by His almighty power

and love created me

in His image.

Glory be to the Son, who

by His Precious Blood

delivered me and opened

for me the gates of Heaven.

Glory be to the Holy Spirit,

who has sanctified me in the

sacrament of Baptism, and

continues to sanctify me by

the graces I receive daily.

Glory be to the Three

Persons of the Holy Trinity,

now and forever. Amen.

JUST A THOUGHT...There is a story about St. Augustine walking along the beach lost in thought about the Trinity. On his walk, he sees a boy with a bucket who is running back and forth filling it with water from the ocean and emptying it into a hole that he has dug in the sand. St. Augustine comes to realize that just as the boy could never empty the entire ocean into a hole, so too can a human never understand the infinite mystery that is the Holy Trinity. The lesson for us is that we cannot know everything because some things are simply beyond our finite minds. Why would we make such an audacious assumption anyway? Most of us haven’t even explored all the features on our cell phone, why would we think we could understand the inner workings of the Creator? Rather than dwell on what we cannot know, it would be more useful to explore the ways that God touches us in our daily lives. With joy in our hearts, let us discover the Trinity!

The Living Rosary Association meets in the Church on the first Sunday

of every month at 10:15 am to recite the Rosary. Everyone is welcome!

Please contact the parish office for more information or if you would like to join.

Next weekend, June 2/3, we celebrate the

Feast of Corpus Christi. Join us for Eucharistic Adoration

and Benediction 15 minutes before each Mass.

All children are welcome to show their love of God by holding

flowers as Father Jerry processes with the Holy Eucharist.

If your child is able to participate, please arrive

20 minutes before the start of Mass.
