A New Saint , Pope Paul VI

Prayer of Saint Pope Paul VI

Dear Paul, through your example of

unrelenting love for the poor and work for world peace,

you give us great hope.

Grant us your strength of character to uphold the

dignity of human life everywhere;

To work for the reconciliation of matrimony and

to learn to love as you did with courage.

We ask in Jesus name.

Amen.

Father Robert Fulton

Pope Paul VI was born as Giovanni Ba sta Enrico Antonio Maria Mon ni on Sept. 26, 1897. He became Pope in 1963 and served un l his death on August 6, 1978.

In those fi een years, he le an indelible mark, not just on the Catholic Church but on the world. He succeeded John XXIII. He con nued the Second Va can Council, started by his predecessor. This alone was remarkable. In the past, if a Pope died during a council, the council was closed. But Paul VI knew the importance of this council and con nued it un l 1965 - implemen ng its numerous reforms.

Paul VI wanted a church that was in dialogue with the modern world. He wrote about this at length in his first encyclical Ecclesiam Suam (His Own Church), released on Aug. 6, 1964. From the document, it says, “The aim of this encyclical will be to demonstrate with increasing clarity how vital it is for the world, and how greatly desired by the Catholic Church, that the two should meet together, and get to know and love one another.”

He published the controversial encyclical “Humanae Vitae” in 1968. He wrote this in response to a growing number of Catholics, both clerical and laity, wan ng to reform the Church’s posi on on birth control. His encyclical delivered a strong “no” to change, reaffirming the Church’s teaching on contracep on. Even though his papacy lasted for another 10 years, this would be his last encyclical.

The period a er Va can II was a turbulent period in the Church history. Many of the reforms to be put in place required big changes in how the Church worshiped; in par cular, changes to the liturgy like celebra ng Mass in the language of the worshipers. Many of the prayers said for centuries during Mass were re-wri en, to be er reflect modern thinking. Those of us old enough remember the altars being turned around so the priest faced the worshipers and laity were welcomed on the altar to be lectors. The Mass became more par cipatory rather than observed. Today, those changes seem so natural, but when they first came into being, they seemed radical. I think of all the people of our Parish who serve as Eucharis c Ministers, Lectors and Sacristans. How alive the Mass is with so many people taking an ac ve role in liturgy. Pope Paul VI governed the Church during this difficult period. In the words of Pope

Francis, he was a man who “knew how to witness, in difficult years, to the faith in Jesus Christ.”

While Paul VI’s first and last encyclicals are most o en cited and remembered, Pope Francis says Paul VI’s 1975 exhorta on on evangeliza on, Evangelii Nun andi (On Proclaiming the Gospel) is “the greatest pastoral document wri en to date.” It undoubtedly was much of the inspira on for Pope Francis’ own document, Evangelii Gaudium (Joy of the Gospel.)

“The world calls for, and expects from us, simplicity of life, the spirit of prayer, charity towards all, especially towards the lowly and the poor, obedience and humility, detachment and self-sacrifice. Without this mark of holiness, our word will have difficulty in touching the heart of modern man. It risks being vain and sterile,” Pope Paul wrote.

Pope Paul VI will become the third pope that Pope Francis has made a Saint since his elec on five years ago. The others are Pope John XXIII, who died in 1963, and Pope John Paul II, who died in 2005. Both were canonized together in 2014.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As elec on campaigns move into high gear, some mes the phrase “the Catholic vote” is heard. It’s an interes ng concept, since Catholics started out in this country as a very fragile group: fewer than forty thousand of us at the me of the first census in 1790, and only about 2 percent of the popula on by 1830. It was a priestless church for all intents and purposes, lay-led clusters of Catholics wai ng pa ently for the occasional visit of a priest, sustained by gathering when they could on Sunday for devo onal prayer like litanies and the rosary. They tried to hold on to their ancestral faith as best they could. Archbishop Jean-Louis Cheverus told one family in Maine to “every day say your prayers on your knees with affec on, and every Sunday gather to hear the Gospel, to pray in common, and to quiz the children on the catechism.”

Inevitably, some became Protestant, but many more stayed Catholic from genera on to genera on, with very li le encouragement or sacramental ministry from the clergy. Archbishop John Carroll, the first American bishop, tried to make Church law flexible: shortening the length of the fast before Communion, easing the Lenten fast, and even relaxing the rule of Sabbath rest at harvest me. Catholicism in England had been quietly sustained in this way for two centuries, and the first American Catholics carried on as had their ancestors, providing a fer le soil for the unprecedented success and phenomenal growth of the Church in our country. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

When it comes to the Holy Eucharist, the living sacramental presence of Jesus Christ, we hold the receiving of Holy Communion in high esteem because we believe that Jesus Christ is truly present in the Eucharist—body, blood, soul and divinity. When we receive our Lord in Holy Communion, we should receive him in the way we encounter a loved one: with reverence, care, gentleness and humility. For in the Holy Eucharist, the Catechism of the Catholic Church notes, “Christ, God and man, makes himself wholly and en rely present.”

The Church permits Catholics to receive the Eucharist either on the tongue or in their hands, at the discre on of the one receiving Holy Communion. Both modes of receiving Holy Communion have their own value and their own beauty. Catholics who receive should ensure that their hands are clean as they prepare to literally touch the presence of Christ. They

should receive right away, not when they return to their seat. To pluck, grab or pull the Eucharist into their hands is a sign of great disrespect and could lead to accidently dropping the sacred host. For to receive Our Lord in Holy

Communion is, indeed, the most profound union we can have with God this side of eternity. h ps://www.catholicnewsagaency.com/resources/roman-missal-3rd-edi on/bishops/the-manner-of-receiving-holy-communion

Be a Trusted Resource if a Child Discloses Abuse.

Parents are in a unique posi on to know about not only their own children, but their children’s friends. If you are a trusted parent, your child’s friend may come to you with secrets. What do you do if a child tells you about abuse? As an adult, it’s cri cal that you remain calm, and don’t overreact. Child vic ms are o en frightened and confused, and your confusion and anger does not help their situa on. Your concern and support, however, will affirm the child in important ways and can help begin the healing process for a child vic m who has suffered at the hands of a predator.
