St. Louis Cold Drawn was founded in 1971 by Lyle and Nadine McNair. Lyle grew up in poverty in Iowa and worked as a custodian during college to pay for his tuition. He studied industrial engineering at Iowa State University, where he met a fellow industrial engineering student — Nadine Hanson. Nadine was one of the first women in Iowa to graduate with a degree in the sciences.

During Nadine’s last year at Iowa State, Lyle moved to St. Louis because he was offered a job there that paid $0.25 more per hour than he could get at any job in Iowa. When Nadine graduated, they married and she moved to St. Louis, too. They became entrepreneurs in St. Louis, starting several manufacturing companies in the area. Among them was an aluminum extrusion plant in Murphysboro, Illinois, which still operates today with several hundred employees.

The final company that Lyle and Nadine founded was St. Louis

Cold Drawn. It began as a start-up company with minimal capital. Operations were carried out in a small industrial garage near the St. Louis airport with an annual production capacity of 2,000 tons, which made STLCD, in 1971, the smallest cold-drawer in the country. Lyle worked in the plant, running, maintaining, and installing machines, while Nadine did the accounting. In their lifetime they grew St. Louis Cold Drawn into one of the largest cold-drawers in the Midwest.

William McNair, Lyle and Nadine's son, joined the company in 1974. When his parents retired, William became president. Under his tenure, St. Louis Cold Drawn increased production to more than 100,000 tons annually, and came to employ nearly 200 people. Today, St. Louis Cold Drawn continues to grow under the leadership of two of William's children, Steven and Ryan McNair.

Name: Larry, “Snoop”, “Scooter” Birthday: July 18 Hometown: St. Louis, Missouri Favorite job at STLCD: driving the forklift Favorite food: steak and mashed potatoes Interesting fact: Snoop is the only child of a single mother

Scooter has a lot of loves outside of work. He roots for the Denver Broncos, the Cleveland Cavaliers, and his hometown team, the St. Louis Cardinals. He loves spending time with his three sons, especially playing basketball (two of his sons are stronger than he is, he says, so they sometimes take advantage of their dad).

But Scooter likes a lot of things about work, too. He enjoys the unpredictable tricks that Sreten can play, and the barbecues that STLCD hosts when companies like Nucor visit. He likes Bernie Kilcullen – “Bernie’s cool. You don’t know whether he’s coming or going. Keeps you on your toes.” But most of all, he likes that the company gave him a chance.

Scooter had some trouble finding work in the past because of his record. But when he came to STLCD, he says, “They gave me an opportunity to make something out of myself. A lot of jobs don’t offer you that chance if you have a felony, but this place opened the door for me. I haven’t walked out on them since.” And if Scooter appreciates the company, his coworkers appreciate the value he adds to it. Snoop gives the company great versatility. He works many different kinds of jobs, and he’s always busy — and always willing to take on whatever task he’s asked to do. Those are just some of the things that make Scooter a great member of the team at STLCD.

Spotlight on Safety

Safety has always been and will always be the top priority at St. Louis Cold Drawn. We devote plant meetings to safety practices; we spend countless hours developing the safest procedures; and we invest hundreds of thousands of dollars in equipment and guards for our machines and for our people. Safety is now a more integral part of our culture than ever, but one key aspect of safety never changes: it needs you. STLCD reminds every team member that your decisions are critical to keeping our team and our plant safe. This starts with choices as basic as always wearing your boots, your hard hats, and your safety glasses. Beyond keeping you safe, these actions remind everyone around you that safety is our priority. Let’s always remember that safety is not the job of one person or one policy: it’s up to all of us.

“They gave me an opportunity to make something out of myself … this place opened the door for me.”
