  • St. Louis Christmas December 4 - 6, 2020

  • Friday, December 4 (Kickback Reception) Today we board our deluxe motor coach and chat with friends as we journey to St. Louis - the “Gateway to the West.” St. Louis Union Station, a National Historic Landmark, is filled with sweeping archways, fresco and gold leaf detailing, mosaics and glass windows. You’ll find several tasty lunch options, from light fare to classic dining. Take time to admire the beautiful interior and whisper to your friends at the “Thieves Arch.” You might choose to visit the Aquarium, which takes you on a journey along a freshwater river, the shallow water of a salt marsh and into the deep dark abyss of the ocean. Or, experience the fun of a Mirror Maze, one of the iconic attractions of the 1904 World’s Fair (additional fees apply).

Next, we’re going up - 200 feet up for a spectacular view of the city skyline. In a fully enclosed, climate-controlled gondola, we will rotate three to four times during our exciting 15-minute ride on The Wheel. This afternoon we check into the Drury Inn Union Station for a two-night stay. After getting settled in your room, meet your friends at the hotel’s complimentary Kickback Reception serving hot food and cold drinks before we depart for Tilles Park where the annual Winter Wonderland light display will be shining bright. We will board horse-drawn carriages for a leisurely ride through this festive holiday spectacle.

Saturday, December 5 (Breakfast, Dinner) After breakfast at the hotel we depart on a city tour. Our local guide will lead us through historic neighborhoods, along the St. Louis riverfront and past the Gateway Arch. We’ll see Busch Stadium, home of the St. Louis Cardinals, the Anheuser-Busch Brewery and drive through Forest Park where the celebrated 1904 World’s Fair was held. Based on availability, our tour will include a visit to the awe-inspiring Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis, a masterpiece of art and history that contains one of the largest collections of mosaics in the world. Artisans, craftsmen, stonecutters, and masons spent almost a century creating this incomparable church in which over 83,000 square feet of mosaics, that contain 41.5 million pieces of glass in over 7,000 colors, took more than 76 years to complete. This incredible display rivals those found in the grandest churches of Europe.

The vibrant, eclectic Central West End is home to cafes, smart Italian and Asian fusion restaurants, chic boutiques and antiques stores. There is a wide variety lunch options, unique shopping and historic architecture to enjoy during your free time here.

This afternoon we will take our seats at the Fabulous Fox Theatre for the matinee performance of a Broadway-style show. After the show there will be some time to refresh back at the hotel and before we depart for a wonderful Italian dinner at Fazazza’s, a family-owned restaurant in the historic neighborhood known as “The Hill.”

Following dinner we’re in for a special holiday treat at the Missouri Botanical Garden’s annual Garden Glow. Stroll through the garden surrounded by an exhibition of unique light installations as well as hundreds of thousands of lights adorning some of the garden’s most iconic locations including the Climatron, Kaeser Memorial Maze, the Central Axis, and Tower Grove House. Walkways are transformed into an explosion of visual magic, while more traditional displays will delight visitors of all ages. While you’re here also take a moment to stroll through the indoor Gardenland Express Holiday Flower and Train Show.

  • Sunday, December 6 (Breakfast, Lunch) This morning we will visit a true St. Louis gem - the Magic Chef Mansion - decked out in all of its Christmas finery. This 12,000 square foot home was built for Charles Stockstrom (1852-1935), the founder of the Quick Meal Stove Company, later renamed Magic Chef. Construction began on this beautiful German Renaissance palazzo in 1907 and was completed a year later at a cost of $49,500. His daughter Adda Ohmeyer continued to reside in the Mansion until her death in 1990. Over the next 20 years, the home was painstakingly restored to its turn-of-the-century elegance, including original lighting fixtures and period furnishings.

As we begin our journey homeward, we’ll stop in the quaint river town of Kimmswick during their Old Fashioned Christmas Festival. The town stands as a living museum stocked with homemade crafts, antiques and simple charms. We’ll first relish friendly service, a home-cooked lunch and specialty desserts at the Blue Owl Restaurant. This charming restaurant is home to “The Famous Levee High Apple Pie” and has been featured on The Food Network, The Travel Channel, The Today Show and in O Magazine. After lunch you have time to explore the town, enjoying carolers while browsing through the shops, many located in historic buildings dating back to the mid-1800’s. Don’t miss a complimentary tour of the historic Burgess How House, circa 1840, adorned in festive holiday decor.

This evening we will arrive home filled with the Christmas spirit and fond memories of our festive trip!
