Life on Lawler One of the most harrowing and profound experiences in life is the mystery of suffering, either personal or the sufferings of others. We believe in an all-loving, all-powerful God. Not only does all love come from God, but the Apostle John says that God is Love. And we know that genuine love seeks the good for the beloved. If you love someone, you want that person to have what is truly good for him, what truly and most perfectly makes him happy. But God loves us infinitely more than we love each other. Therefore we know that God wants us to have what is good for us, what truly makes us happy. But that is just what makes the sufferings of this present life so odd, perplexing, and even apparently contradictory. If God is all powerful, and truly seeks our good, then why does He allow all the suffering we experience in this life? Today’s gospel describes the scene of two suffering individuals: one we know, Jairus, an official of the local synagogue, and one who is unnamed. Jairus is seeking Jesus’ intervention and aid for his fatally ill daughter, the nameless person, a woman, is seeking healing from a prolonged and chronic ailment. Both believe that Jesus can alleviate their suffering. Each does so in their own unique way: one directly and the other indirectly. Each received the healing they sought.

The relationship between our present life and the life to come is the grounding of purpose and value of our sufferings in this present life. Faith illuminates the insight and truth that suffering is an opportunity given to us to participate in our future holiness by offering our present sufferings, in union with Christ’s sufferings, to God in self-giving sacrifice. Our suffering then takes on a whole different dimension, transformed from the occasion of perhaps, a fist-shaking questioning of God or cause for doubting His goodness or existence into the greatest opportunity to show Him trust and self-giving, knowing and believing that God wishes only our welfare. The unnamed woman thought, ‘If I but touch his cloak, I shall be cured.’ Jairus pleaded that, ‘my daughter is at the point of death. Please come and lay your hands on her that she may get well and live.’ Both are professions of faith. Jesus tells the woman, “Go your faith has saved you” and to Jairus,”Don’t be afraid, just have faith.”

So much of our suffering would seem needless and capricious and even sinister if there is

no life after this one, as many in our society assert. But in the light of the gospel we see that our suffering is a gift, a gift of the same sort as this present life, but even greater. It is the gift of an opportunity to profess our faith and to give ourselves entirely to God in the greatest possible expression of love, i.e. sacrifice: “Greater love has no one than this that one lay down his life for his friends.”

I don’t pretend to have any revealed insight into the mystery of suffering, our own or

others other than to say it can be an occasion of renewed faith and trust in God and a provocative witness to God’s abiding love and goodness. This is why the Christian martyrs rejoiced when they were chosen for martyrdom, and why after being flogged the Apostles went away “rejoicing that they had been considered worthy to suffer shame for His name.” (Acts 5:41) Faith doesn’t perhaps change the circumstances we may find ourselves in but gives us a new perspective from which to see and perceive God’s providence at work in our lives and in the lives of others. It helps us see hope in seemingly hopeless situations. As Jesus exhorted Jairus, “Don’t be afraid, just have faith.” Profound words to live by in good times and especially in bad.

May one and all enjoy a blessed and Happy Fourth of July! Father Joe

The St. Vincent de Paul Society

LOVE IN OUR WORK In today’s Gospel we see how in faith, Jairus asked Jesus to heal his daughter and how Jesus then answered his prayer. In prayer we also come to know that we are loved by God, and in that trust we ask for healing for ourselves, our loved ones and all those who are suffering.

Through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul brought the love and healing of Jesus to our suffering neighbors.

Blessed are the peacemakers, For they will be called the children of God.

“...and a little child shall lead them.” Recently, a little six-year-old boy appeared at the door of the rectory. He wanted to donate money “for the poor.” We learned that while he was at his sister’s First Communion Party, he was given donations for crafts he created. He wanted the money ($17.91) to “go to the poor, so the poor wouldn’t be poor anymore.” The money was cheerfully given, gratefully received and entrust-ed to our parish St. Vincent de Paul Society. If we all had the mindset of that six-year-old boy, may-be none of us would be poor anymore.

FOUNDATION The will of the people is the only legitimate foundation of any government, and to protect its free expression should be our first object. —Thomas Jefferson

Dear Hawktoberfest Sponsor,

The goal of St. Linus, under the leadership of our principal Margaret Hayes, is to educate and inspire

each child with a faith-based, challenging education and community involvement. It has been the privilege of St. Linus to remain committed to our students, community, and the future of Oak Lawn for over 60 years. In that time, we have been able to exceed expectations thanks to hardworking staff, loyal families, and the generosity the Oak Lawn community.

We are so grateful for your previous support of Hawktoberfest, which has been an integral part of St. Linus’

fundraising effort for the past 7 years. In that time, the event has raised over $140,000, allowing St. Linus, to continue to challenge our students with a well-rounded, liberal arts education using state of the art technology. The generosity of the Oak Lawn community has enabled us to install Bright Links Projectors in all classrooms, purchase Think Pads for our middle school students, supply literature eBooks and teaching software to middle school classrooms, update the science curriculum, and purchase iPads for multiple grade levels. We would not have even been able to conceive of such a challenging endeavor if it had not been for your previous support.

Hawktoberfest 2018 is quickly approaching. We are excited to offer many activities for both children and

adults. Children will be delighted with games, sports, crafts and jumpees, while adults will be able to enjoy live music with great food and drinks. Each year, hundreds of Oak Lawn residents of all ages participate in the festivities. Hawktoberfest truly is a wonderful community event that brings people of all ages together for fun and friendship.

As we prepare for our 8th annual Hawktoberfest, to be held on September 15, 2018, we are again reaching

out to ask for your support. In return for your financial assistance, we offer several advertising opportunities. Your business name and/or logo will appear on our website, weekly flyers, and on banners at our event. With a donation of $100 or more, your business name will appear on the back of our Hawktoberfest t-shirts, which are worn by hundreds of adults and children throughout the school year. One hundred percent of your gift is tax deductible (please email [email protected] if a tax receipt is desired). Please consider supporting Hawktoberfest and return the form before September1, 2018 so that we may give your business appropriate recognition.

Thank you for your time and consideration. We appreciate the fact that we live in a community where our

neighbors value the education of our children, and volunteer to invest in the future of our neighborhood and our residents. For questions, please feel free to visit our website at www.stlinusoaklawn.org/hawktoberfest or email us at [email protected].

Sincerely,

The St. Linus Fundraising Committee
