LITURGY OF THE DAY Today we continue hearing about the first days Jesus spent with his disciples, healing those who are ill or possessed by demons. When he cures Simon Peter’s mother-in-law, she im-mediately rises and serves her guests. She may

not realize it, but she is providing an example to her son-in-law and his companions. She is showing what it means to be a disci-ple of Jesus. The call to be Jesus’ disciple is the call to serve.

Question of the Week What does it mean to be a disciple? How do I serve God and serve others?

Today’s ac-count shows some of the strain or adjust-ment of his new life of preaching the reign of God, healing the sick, and cast-ing out demons. . With the self-sacrificing example he gave until the end of his earthly life, he tells his followers that this is his whole purpose. Through Mark, he is also telling the early church, and he is telling us, that this is our purpose, our vocation: to be tireless in our pur-suit of proclaiming the Good News, and in bringing the healing, reconciling touch of Christ to the world.
