FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK By Fr. Terry Kerner
Thank you to all who supported the Capuchins with a purchase of baked
goods. At the end of the weekend $2,635 was raised and many sweet tooth (or per-
haps, sweet dentures) was satisfied. The “On the Rise Bakery” was started by the
“Caps” a few years back to help recovering alcoholics and addicts get back on their
feet with a meaningful trade and job. The bakery has had a very high success rate
over the years. (Edward, who spoke at all the Masses, mentioned that some larger
suburban parishes have not done as well as St. Kateri did last week.) THANK YOU
to all who made the effort to help and purchase some great treats.
We have planned to have the bakers back during Lent taking pre-orders for
Easter coffee cakes, breads and rolls. Stay tuned for all the details.
All Saints Day, a Holy Day of obligation is this Friday. Masses are scheduled
for 9 AM, Noon and 5 PM. The Feast of All Saints dates back to the fourth century
when Christianity became “legal” and protected by the Roman Empire. The feast
was celebrated on many different dates until finally in the ninth century Pope
Gregory IV set the date on November first. The feast has meaning when we realize
that countless saints exist but have never been officially canonized. It is even more
significant when we reflect on family and friends who have passed and who were
truly holy persons. Take time this Friday to remember those folks who inspired you
to be a good person and maybe even want to become a saint.
Saturday, November 2nd is the Feast of All Souls. Though not a holy day of
obligation but one that instinctively calls us to remember deceased loved ones. On
Sunday at the 11:00 AM Mass we will recognize with a lighted candle on the altar
all our parishioners who have died since last All Souls Day. Family and friends are
encourage to attend, present the lighted candle, and pray for their loved ones in un-
ion with the St. Kateri community. You may want to utter the following prayer for
your deceased loved ones:
Almighty God and Father, by the mystery of the cross, you have
made us strong, and by the sacrament of the resurrection you
have sealed us as your own. Look kindly upon your servants,
now freed from the bonds of mortality, and count them among
your saints in heaven.
Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord
And let perpetual light shine upon them

were purchased. Thank you to Ed from On The Rise Bakery for sharing his story
with the parish and for all his hard work in bringing these goodies to us. Thank
you to Fr. Kerner for the opportunity to host this event and lastly to all the vol-
unteers who helped with the set-up, sales and clean-up.
Thank you to the Pastor and all of the parishioners at St. Kateri for their support!

HALLOWEEN
Question: Is Halloween a pagan holiday or a Catholic one?
Answer: The short answer: nowadays, a little bit of both. But it wasn’t always
that way. Halloween and All Saints’ Day are closely connected. In the 800s, the
Catholic Church began celebrating All Saints’ Day. It was originally called All
Hallow’s Day or Hallowmas. The celebration began early on All Hallows’ Eve. But
if Halloween is really about the saints in all their victorious glory, where do we
get haunted houses, costumes, and pranks?
All Saints’ Day became associated with the other deceased rather quickly. Novem-
ber 2
nd
is All Souls Day, where we pray for the souls in purgatory. Throughout the
European world, especially with the Celtic and Germanic peoples, the dead were
honored in the autumn months. The Celtic pagan celebration of Samhain had its
own folk rituals and occurred around the same time as these Catholic feast days.
Within the last few hundred years, this included dressing in disguise and going
door to door, asking for food in exchange for a rhyme or poem. Some people mas-
queraded as “dark” spirits and pulled pranks on others. Today’s celebration of
Halloween tends to take on these later
practices, rather than the original mean-
ing of celebrating the saints. But remem-
ber … this feast was Catholic first!

ST. KATERI PARISH GIFT SHOP NEWS
November is upon us, the month of All Souls and All Saints. (So we are all
covered!) To remember the souls of our departed loved ones, the Gift Shop carries
outdoor cemetery candles, cemetery candle holders and memorial ornaments.
We will be open before and after Masses on Friday, November 1
st
, the
feast of All Saints. Take some time this month to read about the saints. We have
a separate bookshelf dedicated to books about these holy men and women...some
contemporary and some traditional. There are also books with collections of saint
biographies for both adults and children. Your children and grandchildren need to
learn about these real super heroes who walked the earth and faced similar chal-
lenges to ours.
Some parishioners are already asking about Advent and Christmas
items. We will be putting those items out soon. We hope to have some new items
out such as ornaments, cards, manger figures, and vinyl window décor. Thank
you for your continued support!

A Prayer for First Responders
Pray for the family and loved ones of first responders.
Lord, have mercy on those who must wait, trust and hope every
time a first responder goes into action. They are all too aware of the
dangers their loved ones face. Please, as Your word promises, keep
them in perfect peace; steady their minds and help them to trust in
You (Isaiah 26:3), in Jesus' name, amen.
