Half the liturgical year 2016 is completed after six months of extraordinary celebrations. The Incarna-tion mystery: Jesus’ advent, nativity, epiphany. The Paschal mystery: Jesus’ passion, death, resurrection, Pentecost’s Holy Spirit. The solemnities of Holy Trin-ity and Jesus’ Body and Blood. Today the Church re-sumes Sundays in Ordinary Time, but with a Gospel of extraordinary mercy: Jesus raises a dead man to life. Yet the one who benefits most from his extraordinary mercy is not the dead son but his widowed mother. With her husband and only son deceased, this wom-an’s material support, in that patriarchal society, had vanished. So had her emotional support, leaving her helpless, abandoned, on society’s “peripheries.” One of Pope Francis’ hopes in calling this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy is to transform us into more extraordinary Christians, by making our caring out-reach to just such vulnerable people, and our practi-cal self-sacrificing love for them, our ordinary, daily, Christian way of life!--Peter Scagnelli, Copyright (c) J. NEXT SUNDAY’S READINGS

First Reading -- The LORD forgives David for taking the wife of Uriah, and for having Uriah killed (2 Samuel 12:7-10, 13).Psalm -- Lord, forgive the wrong I have done (Psalm 32).Second Reading -- If justification comes through the law, then Christ died for nothing (Galatians 2:16, 19-21).Gospel -- Jesus forgives the woman because of her great love (Luke 7:36 -- 8:3 [7:36-50]).

QUESTION OF THE WEEKAdult: To whom can you show a greater sense of com-passion and mercy?Youth: To whom can you be more caring this week? How would you show that to him or her?

Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today, the Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, we return to numbered weeks rather than seasons or solemnities. We are told stories of two widowed mothers whose only sons have died. They find themselves grief-stricken and alone. Jesus was himself the only son of a widowed mother so his compassion for the grieving mother described in Luke is especially poignant. What is perhaps sur-prising is that it takes something as catastrophic as the loss of a son and his restoration for the mothers and the crowd to recognize that God is in their midst. Through their personal experience of death and resurrection, they recognize God, but a God who had always been present to them, even from their mother’s womb. Today’s readings ask us how we recognize God in the face of terrible loss and suffering.

GOD IN OUR MIDSTIn our reading from First Kings, Elijah visits the house of a widowed mother whose only son falls ill and dies. Elijah, calling upon God, restores life to her son. The grieving mother recognizes Elijah as a man of God only after he restores her son to life. In Galatians, Paul fails to recognize God in his presence even as he is persecuting and trying to destroy those who follow Christ. Through God’s grace, Jesus Christ is revealed to Paul, who then proclaims that reality. In Luke, another widowed mother’s son has died and is restored to her through the compassion of Jesus. In each instance, God is there, with the mothers and with Paul, waiting to be recognized. God is only recognized, however, when what is most precious, most beloved, most central to the life of each person has been lost and restored, has died and been resurrected.

TURNING MOURNING INTO DANCINGThese readings tell the all-too-familiar story of loss and death. Each also tells of resurrection, life restored. Death and darkness transform our lives in profound and terrible ways. But our faith promises us that there is a dawn, a resurrection when we will rejoice. There is a time when our mourning will be transformed into dancing. These readings remind us that we can choose the time of rejoicing and dancing because it is with us now, even as death, despair, and darkness seem to overwhelm us. God is in our midst if only we will recognize the light, the joy, the dance that is present in our lives and within our world. If we choose the darkness, then we will not recognize the presence of God. If we choose to rejoice and dance even in the face of loss and death, then will our mourning be transformed. Then will we know God in our midst.

DID YOU KNOW?Pool safety is about more than swimming Swimming is a fun way to have some fun and beat the heat during the summer. Parents should teach their children about swimming safety, including how to identify and handle uncomfort-able situations. Although you may be watching closely to make sure your kids are safe in the water, don’t forget about when they’re walking around, sitting out by the pool, using the re-strooms or out of sight. Teach your children what to do when they feel uncomfortable at the pool, and let them know it is okay to walk away and find a parent or trusted adult at any time. For more information and a copy of the article called “Know the Rules…Summer Safety Tips to Teach Children” from the National Center for Missing and Exploited, email: [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227.
