For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who

are being saved it is the power of God. 1Cor 1:18

PRACTICE THE PAUSE.When in doubt, pause. When angry, pause. When tired, pause.

When stressed, pause. And when you pause,

PRAY.

The mercy of God - What a beautiful truth of faith this is for our lives! God’s love for us is so great, so deep; it is an unfailing love, one that always takes us by the hand and supports us, lifts us up, and leads us on.

In the Gospel of John (20:19-28), the apostle Thomas personally experiences this mercy of God, which has a concrete face: the face of Jesus, the risen Jesus. Thomas does not believe it when the other apostles tell him, “We have seen the Lord.” It isn’t enough for him that Jesus had foretold it, promised it: “On the third day I will rise.” He wants to see, he wants to put his hand in the place of the nails and in Jesus’ side. And how does Jesus react? With patience, Jesus does not abandon Thomas in his stubborn unbelief; he gives him a week’s time. He does not close the door; he waits. And Thomas acknowledges his own poverty, his little faith; “My Lord and my God!” With this simple, yet faith-fi lled invocation, he responds to Jesus’ patience. He lets himself be enveloped by divine mercy; he sees it before his eyes, in the wounds of Christ’s hands and feet and in his open side, and he discovers trust. He is a new man, no longer an unbeliever, but a believer. Let us also remember Peter; three times he denied Jesus, precisely when he should have been closest to him. And when he hits rock bottom, he meets the gaze of Jesus who patiently, wordlessly, says to him, “Peter, don’t be afraid of your weakness, trust in me.” Peter understands, he feels the loving gaze of Jesus, and he weeps. How beautiful is this gaze of Jesus – how much tenderness is there! Brothers and sisters, let us never lose trust in the patience and mercy of God! Let us think too of the two disciples on the way to Emmaus; their sad faces, their barren journey, their despair. But Jesus does not abandon them; he walks beside them, and not only that! Patiently he explains the Scriptures, which spoke of him, and he stays to share a meal with them. This is God’s way of doing things; he is not impatient like us, who often want everything all at once, even in our dealings with other people. God is patient with us because he loves us, and those who love are able to understand, to hope, and to inspire confi dence. They do not give up, they do not burn bridges, they are able to forgive. Let us remember this in our lives as Christians: God always waits for us, even when we have left him behind! He is never far from us, and if we return to him, he is ready to embrace us. Maybe someone among us in thinking, My sin is so great, I am as far from God as the younger son in the parable; my unbelief is like that of Thomas. I don’t have the courage to go back, to believe that God can welcome me and that he is waiting for me, of all people. But God is indeed waiting for you; he asks of you only the courage to go to him. How many times in my pastoral ministry have I heard it said, “Father, I have many sins”? And I have always pleaded, “Don’t be afraid, go to him, he is waiting for you, he will take care of everything.” We hear many offers from the world around us, but let us take up God’s offer instead: his is a caress of love. For God, we are not numbers, we are important; indeed we are the most important thing to him. Even if we are sinners, we are what is closest to his heart.

O good cross, made beautiful by the body of the Lord, long have I desired thee, ardently have I loved thee, unceasingly have I sought thee, and now thou art ready for my eager soul. Receive me from among

SCRIPTURES ON THE CROSS

Mark 8:34 And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

1 Corinthians 1:18 For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Matthew 10:38 And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.

Romans 5:8 But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Hebrews 12:2 Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

Luke 14:27 Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS - Third Week of the Holy Cross: Philippians 3:17-4:1 & Matthew 24:23-31

1 Corinthians 15:19-34 If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are the most pitiable people of all. But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the fi rst fruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a human being, the resurrection of the dead came also through a human being. For just as in Adam all die, so too in Christ shall all be brought to life, but each one in proper order: Christ the fi rst fruits; then, at his coming, those who belong to Christ; then comes the end, when he hands over the kingdom to his God and Father, when he has destroyed every sovereignty and every authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death, for “he subjected everything under his feet.” But when it says that everything has been subjected, it is clear that it excludes the one who subjected everything to him.

When everything is subjected to him, then the Son himself will (also) be subjected to the one who subjected everything to him, so that God may be all in all. Otherwise, what will people accomplish by having themselves baptized for the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, then why are they having themselves baptized for them? Moreover, why are we endangering ourselves all the time? Every day I face death; I swear it by the pride in you (brothers) that I have in Christ Jesus our Lord. If at Ephesus I fought with beasts, so to speak, what benefi t was it to me? If the dead are not raised: “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.” Do not be led astray: “Bad company corrupts good morals.” Become sober as you ought and stop sinning. For some have no knowledge of God; I say this to your shame.

Matthew 24:1-14 Jesus left the temple area and was going away, when his disciples approached him to point out the temple buildings. He said to them in reply, “You see all these things, do you not? Amen, I say to you, there will not be left here a stone upon another stone that will not be thrown down.” As he was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples approached him privately and said, “Tell us, when will this happen, and what sign will there be of your coming, and of the end of the age?” Jesus said to them in reply, “See that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and they will deceive many. You will hear of wars and reports of wars; see that you are not alarmed, for these things must happen, but it will not yet be the end. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be famines and earthquakes from place to place. All these are the beginning of the labor pains. Then they will hand you over to persecution, and they will kill you. You will be hated by all nations because of my name. And then many will be led into sin; they will betray and hate one another. Many false prophets will arise and deceive many; and because of the increase of evildoing, the love of many will grow cold. But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached throughout the world as a witness to all nations, and then the end will come.

PRAYER BEFORE THE CRUCIFIX

Behold, O Kind and most sweet Jesus, before Thy face I humbly kneel,

and with the most fervent desire of soul, I pray and beseech Thee to

impress upon my heart lively sentiments of faith, hope and charity, true

contrition for my sins and a firm purpose of amendment. With deep

affection and grief of soul, I ponder within myself, mentally contemplating

Thy five wounds, having before my eyes the words which David the

Prophet spoke concerning Thee: "They have pierced my hands and my

feet, they have numbered all my bones."

www.stmaron.orgDear Friend in Christ:

I hope you are well during these most challenging times.

Over the years, this benefit has provided significant financial support to educate seminarians, help parishes and missions, and assist retired priests and ministries of the Eparchy. As in past years, a portion of the proceeds will be dedicated to help the Church in Lebanon and the Middle East – of significant importance this year.

Your participation this year is more important than ever. Leading up to this Virtual Event, we will feature several updates from the organizations, individuals and ministries that are supported by this fundraiser as well as greetings from some very special guests.

I hope you will consider supporting the Eparchy with a special gift this year. Or perhaps you might consider joining the Order of Saint Sharbel if you are not already a member.

Please visit www.stmaron.org to make a gift and/or register for this special online benefit, or return the enclosed reply card in the envelope provided.

Thank you again for helping us make a difference in the life of the Maronite Church and the world, both at home and abroad. I hope to “see” you on October 1. May God bless you for your generosity!
