COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

THE FAMILY

Pope Francis has convened an Extraordinary Synod on the Pastoral Challenges of the Family which is currently underway in Rome.

The publication “Inform” makes several important points about the role of family and the Church.

• There needs to be a renewed commitment to the family and to raising children by the Church

and society at large;

• Religious decline results in family decline and vice versa;

• The Holy Family narrative tells us much about the nature of motherhood and fatherhood and

the acceptance of children as a gift from a loving God;

• The special nature of family life draws us towards a radical self-giving for the good of others

and a willingness to accept what is offered;

• The family is not something that was invented by the Church. It has been the mainstay of

successful societies for millennia;

• It is within the family community that children first learn right from wrong and good from bad;

• The natural family existed before the state and has priority over the state in terms of rights;

• Parents’ role as ‘first educators’ of their children must always be respected;

• All of us have a responsibility to build a social environment which protects and nurtures the

family;

• Parents have the right to bring their children up in accordance with the family’s moral and

religious convictions;

• The family teaches children that they are all loved equally and unconditionally;

• The family is the usual way in which each of us learns to develop a relationship with God and

that God loves them for who they ‘are’, not for what they can ‘do’;

• Children are called to show gratitude to their parents for the gift of life and for the sacrifices

they make for them. They also need to learn to show respect and obedience; and

• Parents do not own children – they are gifted to them out of love.

The Synod on the family is expected to be a watershed in terms of the Catholic Church’s teaching and support for families. Already there are signs suggesting that the strict application of Church doctrine will no longer be the basis for decisions. A statement released last week makes the point that “it is necessary to accept people in their concrete being, to know how to support their search, to encourage the wish for God and the will to feel fully part of the Church…”. It is pleasing to see that, through Pope Francis, the Spirit is leading the Church towards a more contemporary, pastoral and supportive approach to people in diverse situations. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear families and friends of St Joseph’s Regional College. It has been wonderful to see our students return this term enthused to settle into their work as they anticipate their end year examinations. At this time I would encourage everyone to keep our Year 12 students in their thoughts and prayers as they continue with their Higher School Certificate Examinations. Next Thursday we welcome Year 11 families for their Preliminary Awards ceremony. We will also announce our College House captains at this gathering. In addition, families are invited to attend our Year 10 Mass at St Agnes Church next Thursday at 9.30am. This will be a very important Mass as it signifies the last time Year 10 will celebrate Mass together as a united group prior to moving into Year 11. Indeed, this will be a sentimental moment for many of our Year 10 students who will be moving to Newman College in 2015. A Reminder regarding Student Report Distribution an d Payment of College Accounts Firstly, I would like to thank the many families who make significant sacrifices in prioritising the payment of College Service fees and Parish Tuition fees. This is, without doubt, a strong endorsement of the work we do here at St Joseph’s Regional College in the formation of our students ‘to become the best possible people they can be ’. As we approach the conclusion of Semester 2 at the College, I would request continued attentiveness to keeping accounts up-to-date. In this respect, I would remind families (as per my letter at the beginning of the year) that the College is not able to distribute reports if accounts are not paid. In this respect, I am very conscious of avoiding any embarrassing moments for families, and would ask if you are in a situation where you cannot pay an account, then it is imperative that you contact me to make an alternative arrangement. Families have received their College accounts either via email or post this week. It would be very much appreciated if accounts be finalised by 14th November 2014. God Bless

Jim Dempsey College Principal

CURRICULUM NEWS

ABSENCE FROM TASK NEW PROCEDURES

These applications are now available from the College office. When the application has been completed at home by students and parents it should be returned to the pigeon hole marked submit

Absence from Task application in the office. The application will then be processed and an email confirming approval details will be sent to families.

Attention Year 10 students and parents

THE FACTS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF ‘WRITING RIGHT’ • Students will do 12-14 units in the Preliminary Course and 10-12 in the HSC. The only subject

that does not require writing tasks is Maths. • English is not the only subject that requires essays. • Practical subjects and science based courses still require written responses. They may not be

essays, but they will require STRUCTURED written responses, often extended. • Example - PDHPE has a minimum 12 essays. These are assessment tasks only and this DOES

NOT include class tasks, drafts, sample answers. To do well in the HSC, a realistic figure of written responses to be completed would be approximately 80-100. This is for one subject only

• 75% of HSC exams will be writing 3-4 essays, which include 3-4 pages each. • 95% of your tasks will require structured written responses. • Whilst most students choose to drop a course in Year 12, this does not mean written

responses/tasks will ‘drop’. On the contrary, they will increase as you prepare responses for your teacher to mark and check.

THE BOTTOM LINE: LEARNING HOW TO PREPARE AND WRITE ‘RIGHT’ IS THE KEY TO ACHIEVING YOUR BEST IN THE HSC.

When: Every MONDAY

Where: GL8

When: Lunch time

What: Learn how to prepare written responses for AL L subjects.

Bring your lunch…lollies provided!

Last Friday, 11 students participated in the Diocesan Gymnastics competition at Coffs Harbour. The students performed very well and should be congratulated for their commitment in training leading up to the event as well as the early morning start on Friday!

Congratulations to Georgia Hickling who took out second place in the Novice Girls and to Makenzie Dobson who was third. Makenzie Dobson, Shan-Del Studders, Hannah Crispim and Tyla Kemp were the Champion Team.

The College Gymnastics team comprised of Georgia Hickling, Makenzie Dobson, Elizabeth Pike, Hannah Garvin, Sarah Degenaars, Emily Nardella, Hannah Crispim, Tyla Kemp, Jorja Middlemiss, Jesse Willis and Shan-Del Studders. Well done girls!

Mrs Diana Walsh, Coach College Rowing Team

On Sunday 19th October our rowers competed in the Port Macquarie Club regatta held on the Hastings River at Wauchope. It was great to see our younger rowers competing for the first time. Sebastian Staunton and Blake McMillan competed in the double sculls and then backed up in the singles. Well done boys.

Bryce Gardner and Mary Shelley both won their single scull events. Congratulations. We had many other fine efforts on the day.

We are also affiliated with the Hastings Region Rowing Group and it was great to see many of the mums having their first race in the doubles and quads.

A big thank you to Port Macquarie Club for allowing us to run a very successful canteen, as a fund raiser for our club. Many thanks to all who helped out on the day.

Thanks to our coaches Mick Watts and Alan McCarthy who worked tirelessly on the day.
