A comment was made on this point in the Education supplement in the Sydney Morning Herald recently by a notable educator: ''There needs to be a reason and purpose for using technology to enhance students' learning, otherwise we'll end up having technology for the sake of technology where we use it for nothing more than Google searches. With the sort of world we live in, creating, innovating and designing are the skills the kids will need in the future”. With this in mind the St Joseph’s staff will be focusing on the use of technology to enrich learning in the classroom on their Staff Development Day on Day 1 next term (28 th April). The particular emphasis will be on the use of iPads and their interface with the interactive whiteboard and the day will be facilitated by Mr Steve Carter who is the Learning Technologies Officer at the Catholic Education Office. We have recently taken delivery of 5 iPad Airs as well as an Apple TV link that allows, for example, ‘big books’ to be projected directly onto the whiteboard for the benefit of the whole class. All of our students deserve congratulations for their efforts in singing the first of some new hymns we are learning for the Parish Masses. Their lively rendition of “Here I Am Lord” at Mass yesterday was very warmly received by the parishioners present. The culture of spirited, engaged singing at St Joseph’s is largely due to the talents of Mr Bennett and his encouragement of the students to sing and perform confidently in front of an audience. There was no better example of this than at the School Assembly last week. I would like to congratulate the students on their presentations at the assembly and thank the school staff for their dedication in preparing the students to showcase so many aspects of school life. Thank you to the many parents and friends who came along to support the assembly. As we approach the final busy week of term we are challenged to reflect on how we have upheld our own Lenten obligations over the last few weeks. Father Paul mentioned just this at Mass yesterday and even though we may have strayed from our initial commitment to sacrifices or positive behaviours, we should reflect on Lent as a period of real spiritual growth and now endeavour to put our deeper faith into practice in everyday life. “See the hand of God in all that happens….” St Mary MacKillop, (1871)

Dear Friends of the St Joseph’s Community 3 April 2014

We are constantly hearing in the media about the use of technology in education and one of

the key ongoing issues is to ensure the relevance of this technology to enhance teaching and

learning. A comment was made on this point in the Education supplement in the Sydney

Morning Herald recently by a notable educator:

''There needs to be a reason and purpose for using technology to enhance students' learning,

otherwise we'll end up having technology for the sake of technology where we use it for

nothing more than Google searches. With the sort of world we live in, creating, innovating

and designing are the skills the kids will need in the future”.

With this in mind the St Joseph’s staff will be focusing on the use of technology to enrich

learning in the classroom on their Staff Development Day on Day 1 next term (28th April).

The particular emphasis will be on the use of iPads and their interface with the interactive

whiteboard and the day will be facilitated by Mr Steve Carter who is the Learning

Technologies Officer at the Catholic Education Office. We have recently taken delivery of 5

iPad Airs as well as an Apple TV link that allows, for example, ‘big books’ to be projected

directly onto the whiteboard for the benefit of the whole class.

All of our students deserve congratulations for their efforts in singing the first of some new

hymns we are learning for the Parish Masses. Their lively rendition of “Here I Am Lord” at

Mass yesterday was very warmly received by the parishioners present. The culture of

spirited, engaged singing at St Joseph’s is largely due to the talents of Mr Bennett and his

encouragement of the students to sing and perform confidently in front of an audience.

There was no better example of this than at the School Assembly last week.

I would like to congratulate the students on their presentations at the assembly and thank

the school staff for their dedication in preparing the students to showcase so many aspects

of school life. Thank you to the many parents and friends who came along to support the

assembly.

As we approach the final busy week of term we are challenged to reflect on how we have

upheld our own Lenten obligations over the last few weeks. Father Paul mentioned just this

at Mass yesterday and even though we may have strayed from our initial commitment to

sacrifices or positive behaviours, we should reflect on Lent as a period of real spiritual

growth and now endeavour to put our deeper faith into practice in everyday life.

May God bless you .

The students were very excited this week to try out the new basketball rings and backboards. These were purchased last year under the Active After-School Communities (AASC) program that was so successful in 2013. We are re-establishing the program in Term 2 and look forward to the benefits of active team sports for our children as the cold weather approaches. Our thanks go to Jarrath Hillyer of Envy Industries for coordinating the very professional installation of the new basketball structures.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is a feature of St Joseph’s and is an integral part of the daily experiences for staff and students. We are very grateful to the CEO for the fortnightly visit of our Technology Support Officer, Mr Dan Marks, whose understanding of ICT hardware and software is legendary. When not on site, Dan is based in Cooma and Canberra and he is readily available to sort out the most complex ICT issues ….. from wherever he is!
