Doubting Thomas touches the risen Lord! But Jesus says, "Happy are those who have not seen and yet believe." That's us. Jesus the Christ passes on his way and works through Peter, through the other apostles, through the Church. These are the bearers of what is "not recorded in the books" about the Living One, the First and the Last, the One who holds the keys of death and the underworld. Truly, the Christ is risen!

Deacon Patrick's First Mass & Dinner Celebration

SaturdaY. May 29th @ SI. J oseph Church SI. Joseph & St. Clara pari shioners have been honored to ce lebmte Deacon Patrick' s First Mass. Some preliminary effort has occurred wi th the deacon' s fami ly to plan this special event. We would like to assemble a coordination committee to help plan the litu rgy, music, dinner, and reception. if anyone wishes to help coordinate thi s event, please contact Father Greg or Barb Bil lesbach.

NOVENA FOR POPE BENEDICT XVI

We are asked to pray for Pope Benedict XVI and his pastoral mission leading the Church, that the Holy Father may be strengthened and uplifted at this time of unprecedented challenge. The Knights of Columbus and anyone else are encouruged to parti cipate in a sQCcial novena for our Holy Father beginning this Sunday, April I I , and concluding Monday. ApriI19 'h

, the 5'h anniversary of his election to the papacy. The novena prayer is printed to the right. I have ordered some prayer cards but wi ll not arri ve until later this week.

Please set aside June 6th-11th for Catholic Summer Bible Camp!

Run by a team of highly energetic, extremely devout and well catechized college students , our parishes' children and teens always have a blast with it. "Totus Tuus~ means "Totally Yours" in Latin. II was Pope John Paul II 's apostolic motto, taken from a prayer in a book called True Devotion to Mary by Saint Lou is de Montfort: "Totus tuus ego sum, et omnia mea tua sunf - "I am totally yours, and all that I have belongs to you~. By meditating on the prayer when he was a young seminarian , our late Holy Father said he learned "that I could not exclude the Lord's Mother from my liIe without neglecting the will of God-Trinity". Help your child turn themselves over to God by sending them to the Hall igan Center in June!

... _ .. -I' RA YE R FO R l'OI'E BENEDICT XV I Lord, source of eternal life and truth , give to your shepherd, Benedict, a spirit of courage and right judgment, a spirit of knowledge and love. By governing with fidelity those entrusted to his care , may he, as successor to the Apostle Peter and Vicar of Christ, build your Church into a sacrament of unity, love and peace for all the world . Amen.

V, Let us pray lor Benedict, the pope. R! May the Lord preserve him,

gh'e him a long life, make him blessed upon the earth , and not hand him over to the power of his enemies,

VI May your hand be upon your holy servant.

R! And upon your son, whol11 you have anointed.

Forgiven a nd redeemed, let us be forgivers and redeemers

in the world. Rejoici ng in Easter, let us walk in the light of your presence and bring that tight to the world.

We praise yOll , Lord of a ll , ground of our being and source of our life, be our destination and our hope. We ask this through Jesus Christ,

our Lord. Amen.

April 11, 2010 Divine Mercy Sunday

In a wonderful example of lilurgicall imc. the Church ccle~ brates the <lilY of Resurrection for eight full days (an octave) following EaSier Sunday. Thus. even the Muss celebrated today is an extension of the celebration begun on Easter. Last week. in solidarity with those newly baptized at the Easter Vigil. we renewed baptismal promises as we were sprinkled with holy water. Today we do il a ll again. affi rming our Baptism with all()(her renewal of the promises and all()(her sprinkling rite. We continue our life as children of God and disciples of Jesus. The alleluias that retumed at the Easter Vigil eonlinue to resound. During the Easter season. \.\'C leave the readings of the Old Testament to concent rale on the stories of the early Church community in the Acts of the

Apostles. Today. we hear that the sick and possessed gathered in the hope that Peter's shadow might fall on them so that they would be cured.

This is an appropriate reuding for Dh'ine Mercy Sunday. when all lire encoumged to perform acts of mercy and to seek and grant forg iveness. Even more to the point is today's Gospel. which describes Jesus bremhing the Holy Spirit onto the llpostles and gmnting them the authority to forgi\'C sins. On April 30. 2000. Pope John Paul 11 canonized Saint Faust ina. a Polish nun who experienced visions of Jesus speaking aboul Divine Mercy. The Pope declared the Second Sunday of Easter to be Divine Mercy Sunday and commended to everyone the sacrament of Reconciliation.

This Week at Home

Monday, April 12 Born of Water and Spirit As we conti nue to hear from Ihe Gospel according 10 John (21:1 - 19). Jesus ta lk s with Nicodemus about being born "from above:' Nicodemus misunderstands him. thinking he means born agai n- and asks how an)one can reenler Ihe mother"s womb. Jesus corrects his misunderstanding. saying that a person must be baptized (born of water and the Spirit). Frequently in John's account. Jesus uses words thai have both a literal and a spiritual meaning. When people misunderstand Jesus. it is because they do nm see past the literal meaning to the heart of God from wh ich Jesus speaks.

Tuesday, April 13 Easter Season at Home Today is the tenth day of the Easter 5eason. We have 40 more days to rejoice. g ive thanks. and ponder the Easter scriptures. Don't slip back into life as usual ill home. Keep Easter fresh: sing alleluias for your grace at dinner. Float some flO\.\'ers from your garden-even bright dandelionsin a bowl of water on your table. Let each member of your household tel l of the signs of new li fe observed each day.

Wednesday, April 14 God's Mercy Today's Gospel reading is John 3: 16-21. At sporting events you can often see a banner that says: John 3:16. [t reminds us that God did not send Jesus to punish the world. but because God lo\'es us and wants to be one with us. Unfortunately. some people use this verse to condemn anyone who ha.~ not re(:eived the gift of faith. As Cathol ics. we recogn izc that Bapt ism sets us on the pmh to salvmion. but wc also know that God may, in divine mercy. d r,nv anyone to heaven who earnest ly seeks the good. Thank the Lord Ihm it is God's mercy Ihat abounds and nm ours.

Thursday, April 15 Pray for the Persecuted When the apostles preached in the early period after the Resurrection. they converted many but angered others. Peter's response to his captors today (in Acts 5:27-33) is: "We must obey God rather than any human authority:' T hai reason has inspired people of fai th to protest injustice. war. econom ic d isparity. and loss of human rights and d ignity. If Christ ians understand disciplesh ip, they will stand up for what they believe. c\'cn if it means r id icu le and arrest. FOTlUnalcly. such discipleship is usually nO! dangerous in North America. but in many parts of the world it is. Offer a prayer for mi ssionaries and those who labor to bring the Gospel to all.

Friday, April 16 Took, Blessed , Broke, Gave Our Gospel reading for today (John 5:1 - 15) tclls of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. We hear thaI Jesus took Ihe loa\·cs. ga\'c thanks for them (in Greek. Ellc/wrislia). and dis tributed them (presumably breaking them in the process). These actions form the core of Ihe LaSI Supper story Ihm we hear in Matthew. Mark. and Luke. in wh ich Jesus took. blessed. broke. and gave his body and blood in the form of bread and wine. Watch for these actions the next time you are al Mass.

Saturday, April 17 New Life In the northern hem isphere. spring usually coincides with the r:a~ter sea.son. The abundance of new life i~ the perfe(:t echo of Ihe new life of fa ith Ihm Jesus brings. In honor of that new life. fi nd a new flower bulb or seed to plant in your garden or in a pol for indoor bloomi ng this spring. Let it remind you of the gntce that God has given us.
