This Week’s News: -

THANK YOU: Day one began very smoothly and it was lovely to see so many enthusiastic and familiar faces on my rounds throughout the classrooms. A huge thank you to all of our parents who assisted the children to being ready for the beginning of the school year. The children had their books sorted and were prepared for the many new experiences that they were about to encounter. Thank you for your efforts – please know that it assists both staff and students greatly. The new sports shirts and hats look very smart. A reminder that 2015 is a phase-in period for these new styles with both becoming mandatory for the 2016 school year.

We are aware of the hold-up of some of our

uniforms from Wearrito. I have asked Wearrito

to provide the school with regular updates

regarding the delivery of orders.

Please be advised there are still an amount of

uniforms for sale in our secondhand uniform

store.

ADMINISTRATION FORMS: - Students have received their ICT and Code of Practice for while this information has been discussed in class, please support us by reviewing the policy with your child at home. Students will be unable to access our technology resources until the signed forms have been returned to the classroom teacher.

From the Principal:

Welcome to the 2015 school year! I hope that the Christmas break has given you time for relaxation and renewal. We look forward to another wonderful year with many opportunities for learning and growing! On behalf of the St Joseph’s Wandal School community I sincerely welcome all of our new children, families and staff members – it is great to have you here. We have begun the school year with 228

Scott Robertson who will be teaching Year 6 with Natalie Jahnke in conjunction with his role as Assistant Principal Religious Education.

Vikki Watkins who is returning after maternity leave to teach three days per week in 2G.

Lauren Palmer who joins us from St Joseph’s, Biloela. Lauren will be teaching 1P.

Andrea Rutherford who has transferred from St Joseph’s Park Avenue and will teaching our Year 4 class.

Lesha McLeod who will be teaching our Year 5 class two

Friday Afternoon Sport Program Years Five and Six - The Rockhampton District Primary School Inter-school sports program begins on Friday 13th February. This is the commencement of Season A sport for 2015. The children will play each Friday afternoon (with the exception of school holidays) until the end of the Season which will be 1st May. For this season, our Years Five and Six students will be playing soccer and we have nominated two teams for this: one boys' team and one girls' team. Please ensure you have received the letter and Code of Conduct information regarding this – all Code of Conduct forms must be signed and returned to school as soon as possible.

Our Year Four students will join the Years Five and Six students to play Netball and Rugby League for Season B (22nd May – 28th August). More information regarding this will be communicated at a later date.

Instrumental Music Program – If you wish to take part in Piano lessons offered here at school - please see the office for a form and return with $10.00 Administration Fee. Lessons will be Thursday for Piano/Keyboard with Lyn Anstey. Volunteer Induction Sessions - Before volunteering in our school, in any capacity (e.g. class help, tuckshop etc.) you are required to attend a Volunteer Induction Session with a member of the Leadership Team. Parents do not need Blue Cards, however all other volunteers (including grandparents) must present their Blue Cards to office staff before assisting in our school. If you do not have a Blue Card and would like to apply for one, the ladies in the office are more than happy to help with this. The following sessions will be held for anyone wishing to volunteer their time this year: (Please report to the school office) Monday 2/2/15 2.30 pm Wednesday 4/2/15 9.00 am Thursday 12/2/15 2.30 pm

Thanks to Cam and Katie Dunne and their team from All Out Landscaping for their efforts in preparing the school grounds in readiness for the start of the school year. The grounds are looking wonderful after some much-needed rain. Cam and Katie are also coordinating the ‘make-over’ of the bottom court. This is getting closer to completion, with new fencing in place and the planting of shrubs occurring last week. It will be wonderful to be able to utilise this additional play space this year. Thank you too, to the office staff who ‘officially’ worked last week, (although they regularly popped in and out throughout their Christmas breaks) coordinating tradespeople, answering a mountain of emails, and preparing our school for another busy year. Teachers too, have been busy setting up classrooms and preparing valuable learning experiences for your children and participating in a week of Professional Development experiences last week.

Welcome from the

P&F President

Welcome to the St Josephs’ Wandal Community! The start of the school life is a major milestone in the lives of our children – a new school, new friends and new possibilities. However, in coming to St Joseph’s we hope both your child and yourselves appreciate that St Joseph’s is a small school with a very caring community. Very quickly, the new children become known to the older children at the school. This closeness, and an eagerness to look after each other quickly bonds the children together.

The Parents and Friends Association is a strong part of this sense of community in the school. The P&F works closely with our Principal, Mrs Kellie Jenkinson, her teaching staff, the School Board and the school community to enhance the educational opportunities provided to our children. We have over a number of years, provided assistance in the development of the school.

The P&F also have a number of events organised each term with the aim of raising money for good causes for the school, the Church and international aid. These events are always a lot of fun and a good chance for everyone to catch up with each other, sometimes with the kids, sometimes without.

Our first P & F Meeting will be held this Thursday in the staffroom at 6pm. All parents are welcome to attend.

So I encourage you to come along, listen, comment and most of all be involved.

Regards,

Emma Singleton

P&F President

Curriculum Update: Welcome to 2015. I am sure that this is going to be a very exciting year of learning for all of us! The teaching and support staff have been back for a week already, spending the week improving our understanding of school-based curriculum documents and initiatives and the Words Their Way’ approach to phonemic awareness, spelling and vocabulary.

This year we welcome some new teaching staff members to our team and welcome others back! Miss Lauren Palmer has joined us in Year One, Ms Andrea Rutherford is very welcome in Year Four, Mrs Lesha McLeod joins me in Year Five, and Mr Scott Robertson is welcome in our Year Six class. We also welcome back Ms Vikki Watkins in Year Two. I would like to thank these staff members for their enthusiasm and willingness. Of course it goes without saying that I welcome back returning staff and thank them for their efforts so far.

Teachers have also been very busy developing interesting learning environments in classrooms and I would like to thank all of the staff for the hard work they have put in ensuring that your children have exciting places to learn.

All classes will have received a term letter, describing some of the wonderful things that will be happening in classes this term. More information will be available at parent information sessions (which will be held next week). I look forward to catching up with many of you at these.

Have a fantastic week, Janette (APC)

I am a product of CQ having completed both my secondary and tertiary education at Yeppoon and Rockhampton respectively, before teaching at St Patrick’s Emerald and Sacred Heart Yeppoon. My first impression of St Joseph’s Wandal has been the great community feel of the school. I am looking towards this year and its many challenges in my new role.

I have two daughters who are, aside from my work, my other passion. I also enjoy being outdoors in this beautiful part of the world. Please feel free to come and say hi over the coming weeks.
