D. Davie, S. Fitzgerald, R. Dean, R. Humphrey, I.Courtney, K. Bishop and J. McKinnon, P. Cramp, D. Buckley, P. Lowery, W. Lowery, P. Clarke and A. Hodgson.
APOLOGIES: D. Foster, M. Gallagher, M. Slater, D. Ford, D. Lowery and J. Stein. Moved that the apologies be accepted. Moved: D. Davie Seconded: K. White PREVIOUS MINUTES: The Minutes of the previous Annual General Meeting held were taken as read
as they had been distributed prior to this meeting. Moved that these Minutes be accepted as a true record of that meeting.
Moved: B. McFarlane Seconded: C. McFarlane President’s Report: The Committee wishes to record the sad passing of Peter O’Donoghue. The
sad event, however, did see the club grow as a community. In addition we would like to express our appreciation offered by the Bell Post Hill Cricket Club in relation to the event.
The drought has had a severe impact on the season just gone, with the competition being reduced in quality and quantity of games played. The committee is examining ways in which it can drought proof the Zampatti Oval.
It should be recorded that the 4th XI won the 2006 / 2007 premiership in wet conditions.
The committee would also like to record their thanks to all those involved in the Milo programme for making it such a success.
Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer’s report was tabled and discussed. The trading result for the year
was a profit of $11,500. The current cash balance stands at $23,374. Receipts from sponsorship were up $3k from the previous whilst sales from the bar and canteen were down by $4k from the previous year, The reduction from sales can be directly attributed to the shortened season caused by the drought.
The margin achieved on sales by the canteen however was maintained at the same margin as for the previous year. Michael Slater is to congratulated on the overall trading performance of the canteen.
The reports were briefly discussed and the meeting was advised that there
would be expenditure during the coming season on upgrading the main wicket square and practice wicket areas.
It was moved that the reports as presented be accepted.
Moved by W. Lowery Seconded by P. cramp The motion was carried. Election of Office Bearers: Before declaring all positions vacant the President, Ken Gannon thanked all
outgoing Committee members for their support and effort during the past year. The President declared all positions on the Club Committee vacant. D. Davie nominated for the position of Junior Coordinator to replace Kevin
White who was not standing for that position. Otherwise all other current members of the committee were willing to remain on the committee.
It was moved that these nominations be accepted. Moved by I. Courtney Seconded by P. Cramp Motion was carried. General Business:
1. The meeting was advised that with the assistance of Barry McFarlane and Arthur Hodgson, the club had received a grant of $2,500 from the GCA to assist with ground preparation.
2. The President outlined the planned programme of capital expenditure that was proposed for the coming year. It was stressed that the club would need to continue trading profitably to maintain this expenditure.
3. The meeting was given an update on the GCA’s promotion / relegation system as well as the assessment process used.
4. The club has yet to appoint a coach for the 2007/ 2008 season. Sam Loftus will remain as Captain of the First XI. If no individual is found to fit the role of coach, it is proposed that a group of senior players will be nominated to share the workload.
5. Dennis Davie wish to acknowledge the work put in by Kevin White to the development of the club’s junior grades. Dennis explained how he saw his role as Junior Coordinator and that he wished to develop a closer relationship with the GCA.
6. It was agreed that the club needed to take some action to ensure the Milo participants be retained as future players with the club..
There being no further business, the meeting was declared closed at 8.20pm. Keith Bishop Secretary
President’s Annual Report 2007/08 Season
Last season will certainly go down as one of mixed outcomes. Some good and what a club is all about
and some especially our collective team results not so great.
The club has been able to meet the greatest challenge we have ever had….extreme water restrictions as
well as could be expected. After not being included in the water allocation that Barwon Water made
available to local cricket clubs because we were not a Council ground, the club was successful in an
application direct to Barwon Water for a limited exemption for the Zampatti Oval. Key to the
application was
The Warm Season grasses we have installed on both the centre wicket and practice areas.
Water tanks installed in partnership with SJC. The tanks allow the storage of over 100,000
litres of water on site.
The water exemption granted doesn’t extend to Carey and Noble St. ovals however. The future still
looks bleak in that regard and each year we have to apply to gain the support of Barwon Water given
we are not a council ground.
On field results were probably our worst as a club for some years. The firsts failed to make the finals, all
other teams were in the finals yet we did not reach one grand final game. Our junior grades also have not
had a great season with only the under 15 team making a strong showing. Numbers in junior teams
however are large and we can look forward with hope for future seasons.
I would like to express our collective thanks to the leadership group that works to get our teams on the
field each week. Chairman of Selectors Peter Cramp was given an enormous task this season with all the
comings and goings of players each week. Thanks very much to Pete. To our Coach for last Season Dan
Lowery and club captain Sam Loftus as well as all the captains we say thanks for the effort over the
whole season.
Neither Sam nor Daniel will be with us next season and we pass on our thanks and best wishes to them.
Sam over the last 5 years has made an outstanding contribution with bat and ball and his records will
stand well into the future. We are all disappointed to see him go to Geelong West but we always knew
that West was his original club and that he wanted to play there at some time with his life long friends.
Dan of course closes a great cricket career not just at this club but in VCA cricket and we thank him for
stepping forward to help us last season. Both Sam and Daniel will always be welcome here with us at
anytime.
Numbers in all grades are a concern over the next few seasons and I would encourage all players to
invite players that they consider appropriate to play at the Club. Should any of the existing player ranks
seek to retire then replacements will be most valued and needed.
On the individual playing side I congratulate all the award winners and especially David Harris for also
winning the GCA Seconds batting award. Of special note is Damien Foster who in winning the firsts
batting average joined Graeme Beaumont and John Connoley as a 4 time winner of the award.
Congratulations also to the players who made their first eleven debut this season. When Jonathon Casey
played his first game he became the 196th player to reach the standard with our club.
The Club continued to improve in the junior area with the off field team lead by Dennis Davie and
Shane Irwin amongst others. So many young players are moving on from Milo cricket that it is most
important to have the right development environment at the club for them to become good cricketers
in the future. Thanks to all the parents and others who help in this very important area.
Our treasurer Chris McFarlane will present the finance report to the meeting, but is it most important
for all members to understand the results and position of the club.
In addition to the normal Treasurer’s Report we have prepared a 5 year analysis of what has happened
at the club. Please note the growth in activity since we have made the building extensions. When
compared to 6 years ago the movement in our business is very noticeable and makes us a very viable
cricket club in the GCA.
Our revenue is up $31k or over 40 % on 2002-03 season
Our canteen sales are now over $50k
Expenses are contained but we still need $83k just to operate the club each year.
Operating surpluses have allowed us to invest $57k in capital items to
The Club is without debt except to pay SJC rent of $5k per season for the 8 yr balance in our 10 yr
commitment made at the time of the Building Extensions.
Again the Club received a high assessment from the GCA and is affiliated in Division 1 for the 2008-
09 Season. The GCA assessment is conducted now over a 5 year rolling average and under such a
system the club has a secure future in Div 1.
Often the regular contributors can be taken for granted in a club, this should not be so in our Club, I
would especially like to acknowledge,
Felicity McFarlane for the tremendous effort in making and arranging the Club’s weekly
afternoon tea.
Barry for all the wicket preparation and all the little things that need to be done around the place.
Reg Dean for not only being the world’s greatest registrar but also for the weekly efforts on the
BBQ especially at Milo and Saturday morning room preparation.
Rick Humphrey for leading a social group and always going that yard further to help the club.
This year his extra work with Brian Thomas in Milo Cricket was great.
To the players who helped in the junior and Milo areas. Andrew Hodgson, Brendan Weymss and
Patrick Lowery thank you.
Robyn for all the work revolving around Milo Cricket as well as the band of helpers who attend
each week.
An area that over the years we have been slow on was player’s history in all teams throughout the
club. Michael Jaques took on the role of chasing player history and the first step in recognizing players
who have made a significant contribution to the club was taken on our Presentation Night.
The club now recognizes players who play over 250 games across all grades and has created The
Shane Fitzgerald Club which also formally recognizes Shane himself for a great playing contribution
at the Club. Shane’s playing days started at SJCC in October 1964 and he is still playing, truly
remarkable, well done to Shane and the players inducted to the club. The players were -

Whilst this report is mainly an assessment of the season gone it would be remiss of us not to look
forward. We wish Patrick Lowery all the best in his endeavors at Geelong CC, Patrick of course has
been at the club since before he could play and we trust he will have great success at the highest level
possible.
It is with great pleasure I welcome back to the Club David Morgan as our Captain Coach and Daniel
Fanning in support. Both players have had distinguished careers at Geelong and for David at
Richmond as well, it is certainly a great feeling to have them at the club. Already a players meeting
has taken place as we look forward to next year and new players may yet join the club as David and
Daniel talk to those interested in playing. The challenge must be to win the next FIRST ELEVEN
Premiership.
So all in all the Committee is pleased to present the Annual Report to the members as one that sees the
club in good position to move forward. We are sure first eleven successes will come if we move
forward from a solid base, but that success must be with the entire club not at the expense of the club.
We believe the club is in that position now.
