September 18, 2011 25TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME REFLECTION: God our Father is generous with His gifts to mankind. He shows His love in the gift of His only Son and the gift of the Holy Spirit. He calls us to walk in His ways and to reflect His love wi th similar generosity. Generosity is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. It is the opposite of selfishness and meanness. God shows generosity beyond measure. He shows us the way, and His ways are not our ways. Being generous is one way of making my wa ys like God’s ways.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: Do we ever find ourselves resenting the good fortune of others?

Sunday Readings: First Reading: Isaiah 55: 6-9 Psalm 144: “The Lord is near to all who call on Him.”

Second Reading: Philippians 1:20-24, 27 Gospel: Matthew 20: 1-16

POPE BENEDICT XVI “Spiritual Thoughts” – (Homily: St. John Lateran) Christ close to us: Each one of us can be on intimate terms with Him; each can call upon Him. The Lord is always within hearing. We can inwardly draw away from Him. We can live turning our back on Him. But He always waits for us and is

always close to us.

Humour: A wealthy man attended a missionary service and gave a penny to the cause. On the way home he was caught in a storm. He crawled into a hollow tree for protection. The storm lasted longer than he thought, the tree began to swell from the moisture, and the man couldn’t extricate himself. Thinking he was going to be squeezed to death, he began thinking of all the mean sins he had committed. After a while he thought of the measly penny he had given to missions and he felt so small he crawled right out!
