Pastor’s Column

Dear Parish Families,

First, here’s something practical. For the foreseea-ble future, the next couple pages of the bulletin will be labeled “Mark Your Calendars.” These pages will include information about various events coming up, many of which are both SV and SJ. It will help us stay organized.

Second, I keep hearing good news about COVID. For one, the CDC now believes the virus does NOT spread easily on hard surfaces. That’s a relief. I’ve also learned that it is debatable whether asympto-matic COVID-19 virus carriers are contagious. The more research on all this, the better. We continue to take many precautions here. Sr. Joan and I have written a piece about masks later in this bulletin.

Now, about miracles! If you read the Acts of the Apostles, as we have been at Masses, and the Gos-pels, you’ll find story after story of miracles. Miracles are all over the place. God’s power is so far beyond what we could ever expect or hope for.

If we live a life of prayer, a life of fasting, a life of ser-vice, a life of the sacraments…..miracles are all over the place!!!

CS Lewis said that there are two ways of living. One is to see nothing as a miracle. The other is to see everything as a miracle.

I told the story of Mary Reuter in my homily last weekend. There are several others. Billy told me today of a friend of his who attended an online retreat during COVID that moved her to enter a con-vent where I have a friend who is a nun there. I commented that Billy’s friend will owe her vocation to COVID. God, in his miraculous way, redeems every-thing.

Take a look at the photo below. See how the host is in the powerlines!!!! Makes sense- JESUS IS OUR POWER~!! And look at Seminarian Tyler’s devotion.

Blessings and prayers, Fr. Mike

St. Joe Jog—July 27

After consulting with the School Commission, Mrs. Bor-land, and the teachers and staff, I'm happy to announce plans for this year's St. Joe Jog, which funds the schol-arship account as SJS. Last year this event brought in nearly $10,000. As you know, this event normally takes place festival weekend, but sadly we weren't able to do that this year that weekend due to COVID-19. Instead, the St. Joe Jog is a 5K run/walk that will take place on Monday, July 27, 2020 at 6:00pm at St. Joe, right before the Day celebration, also at St. Joe. After the run, we will have hot dogs and other treats!! There is also the option to take part virtually, which would get you a shirt but allow the space to run at a place and time of your choosing. Please signup online now!! You can sign all family members up at once using the link here. There's a link on this form to pay online too using our secure donation portal. Sign up here: https://www.stjoeshelby.org/summer-signups/ You'll get a COOL SHIRT and you'll make a big differ-ence. Please sign up sooner rather than later so we know how much scholarship money we can promise to families who are in need.

St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery Clean-Up

During this time that you cannot be around other people, please plan to take a walk by yourself in St. Vincent Cemetery. While you are there please take the decorations off of your loved one’s grave. The winds have blown many around. You might even pick up some fallen branches and sticks and put them on the brush pile by the Pollinator Habitat Plot. May God bless you and keep you healthy.

St. Vincent Parish Picnic Cancelled

The Parish Picnic has been cancelled for this spring due to COVID-19. We look forward to our combined parish picnic with St. Joseph on Wed., August 19th.

Sr. Joan’s Corner

Dear Parishioners,

This weekend we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost. We are celebrating the fact that Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to be with us always. I pray to the Holy Spirit often. I really believe that any good idea I get about anything comes from the Holy Spirit.

In the readings at Mass this week we get two very different versions of how the Apostles received the Holy Spirit for the first time. In the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles, the Holy Spirit came fifty days after Jesus rose from the dead when the apos-tles were gathered in one place and still confused and afraid. The Holy Spirit came with a strong wind and appeared as tongues of fire resting on each one. After that happened, they were not afraid to speak about Jesus to anyone from all nations and all could understand.

In the Gospel reading it seems like the Holy Spirit came to the Apostles on the evening of the Resurrec-tion and gave them peace and the power to forgive sins.

It doesn’t really matter which version of how the Holy Spirit first came to the Apostles. What is important is that the Holy Spirit did come and is with us until this day. The stories also tell us that the Holy Spirit comes when we are afraid and not knowing what will happen next. The Holy Spirit also gives us courage to speak about Jesus and to forgive one another, even our enemies.

This week as we pray, let us pray to the Holy Spirit to give us peace and the ability to forgive ourselves and others, especially those we find difficult to forgive.

News for Both Parishes

Ask Seminarian Tyler

Question. Dear Seminarian Tyler, I don’t understand Noah’s ark. Why did God want to kill all the people? Why would God hurt people on purpose? I thought He was a nice guy. Your friend, Sam Answer. Wow, these are some good questions. I have been praying with Noah’s story this morning. I think we can’t separate this story from the story of creation when God made Adam and Eve.

God made Adam and Eve, and he loved them very much. God loved them so much that God gave them the choice to love Him back. God made us for this kind of love, which is a great gift. But, God also gave us the freedom to not choose this love, and to turn away from God.

And that is what Adam and Eve did. We call this “sin”. When Adam and Eve chose to not love God, Sin entered the world and affected all of creation. It affected people, it affected the animals, it affected everything.

After Adam and Eve sinned, their children and their children’s children kept sinning and turning away from God. Some of the children loved God, but many of them did not love God.

This is where Noah comes into the scene. Noah loved God, but many people around Noah did not love God. God wanted to renew all of His creation. People had fallen into sin by their own choices, but God wanted to renew his loving relationship with people. So he called Noah to build the ark. He was protecting his beloved people and renewing all of creation. He was cleaning the world from sin. It is like our baptism. We are born with Sin due to Adam and Eve’s sin, but the waters of baptism renew us and clean us of Sin.

God loves us and knows that He is very good for us. He wants to wipe away our sin so we can love Him more. We were created for this kind of love, and we need His help to respond to this great love. He acts in our lives just like He acted in the life of Noah, bringing us closer to His great love.

A Prayer for Priests

O Jesus, Eternal Priest, keep Thy priests within the shelter of Thy Sacred Heart, where none may touch them. Keep unstained their anointed hands, which daily touch Thy Sacred Body. Keep unsullied their lips, daily purpled with Thy Precious Blood. Keep pure and unworldly their hearts, sealed with the sublime mark of the priesthood. Let Thy Holy Love surround them from the world's contagion. Bless their labors with abundant fruit, and may the souls to whom they minister be their joy and consolation here and their everlasting crown hereafter. Mary, Queen of the Clergy, pray for us: obtain for us numerous and holy priests. Amen!

When Will the Adoration Chapel Reopen?

The last holy hour in our chapel was 2:00pm on Friday, March 20th. It was a sad thing for me to take Our Lord out of there, not knowing when I could put him back.

Because of the small space and the difficulty that presents with respect to social distancing, and given the number of parishioners who are older who have hours in our chapel, we are unable to reopen our chapel at this time.

I HOPE it will be safe to reopen on the chapel’s anni-versary, which is June 23rd. We’ll see. - Fr. Mike

St. Joseph News News for Both Parishes

Congratulations St. Joseph Seniors!

Seminarian Tyler’s Bookshelf

St. Francis de Sales was a priest in the sixteenth century. He was known for his spiritual writings, and this week I will recommend his book The Devout Life. What I love about this book is its universality. Everyone can find something to take away from the text as St. Francis breaks down the spiritual life into many different categories. He begins by discussing what devotion to God can look like, and then he offers meditations to help you consider your own relationship with God. After this opening section, St. Francis touches on a number of topics, including: participating in the sacraments of the Church, acquiring the virtues of a good life, com-batting temptations, and persevering in one’s spiritual life. This is not a book that you necessarily need to read cover to cover. Instead, I find it most helpful to open the text to the Table of Contents and find a topic that seems interesting. Maybe it is something that I need help with in my own prayer life, or maybe a topic catches my eye that I know will benefit one of my family members. The sections are short and easy to apply to your own life. I find myself continuing to go back to this book from time to time, and I have greatly benefited from the words of St. Francis de Sales.

A Poem from Fr. Mike

Fr. Mike’s poem Father Sycamore won the first place award in the Shelby County Poetry Contest held by Three Sisters Books and Gifts. The poem was writ-ten about the priesthood and about the priest that saw Fr. Mike grow up, Fr. Charlie Cheeseborough. Here’s the poem: I know a tree planted some hundred years ago by boys in ties and white shirts tucked into black slacks who got their loafers dirty in their digging. Though once small and thin, that tree somehow grew up so towering as to watch over generations of kids playing tag and jumping rope and first fights and first kisses. That tree heard it all, but quietly kept the secrets of boys and girls struggling with elementary angst, pre-teens with their middle school madness, and the nuns who stood beneath it wondering, just for a while, why they gave up their lives for this. There was something in its wind—always gentle & calm. It sheltered us when the sun faded for the storms, and it shaded us from the burn. I used to think: if I were a bird, I would nest here. Sister Anne said its fruit, the buttonballs, were useless— although we children had found their use— and she said that sycamore was the last to leaf in the spring and the first to shed in the fall. But that shreck of a tree reached up to heaven, brought it back, and then bore us up by its zigzag branches. That sycamore fed us everything we needed. If it were still here, I would water it with wine.
