Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time +JMJ July 12, 2020

Pastor’s Column

Dear Parish Families,

You remember the joke about the priest and the painter. Father decided the church exterior needed a paint job. The painter was looking to save a buck, so he didn’t use as many coats as was necessary. The priest couldn't help but notice, so he asked what was going on. The painter confessed that he was just looking to save some money. “What can I do to make it up to you, Father?” he asked. Father replied: “Repaint! And thin no more!”

For years now, St. Joseph Parish has been going through a good bit of a repainting. For example:

All the classrooms have been repainted. All the hallways have been repainted in the

school. The gym has been repainted. The youth room has been repainted. The office was repainted.

All of these painting projects have taken place in the last few years, some before my time began three years ago. After talks with the Parish Council some time ago, and after talks with school leadership, it was discerned that the next thing on the list needed to be the cafeteria (aka “church basement”). One person in parish leadership was so thrilled about the project that they donated the funds to do the whole project. My deepest thanks to this individual!

Now this one was a bit more difficult due to the glaze-covered green bricks. Turns out there is a nice product that can be put on top of that such that paint can be placed on top. It’s coming along nicely.

I suppose some folks probably don’t like the idea of repainting things when they have been as they have been for so long. As one who hates needless change, I TOTALLY get that! But I don’t think this is needless. I guess I would say this. We update our houses -- inside and out -- to as time goes by. Should this be any different? How we present our-selves matters. The green tiles may have looked WONDERFUL when they were first laid, but things have changed.

The last thing that will get repainted is the inside of the church, but that can’t happen until some exterior work is done. That will be a big project, part of the Master Plan. More on that VERY soon!

Blessings and prayers, Fr. Mike

I have told Tyler, like I told Jose last summer and Owen the summer before, he always has a room in this rectory. We are a seminarian-friendly parish! We love these young men who are such inspirations for us.

Let’s have a farewell for Tyler on Sunday, August 2nd, after the Mass in Spanish. All are welcome. We’ll try and have it outside.

Tyler will be a magnificent priest.

Peace, Fr. Mike

Upcoming Events & Meetings

Many events/meetings are still taking place online using Zoom. That said, in-person parish meetings in parishes across the Archdiocese are resuming. Praise the Lord!

REP Registration—Starting Now

It is time to register your son or daughter for the Religious Education Program for the 2020-2021 school year. REP will start in September 2020.

If your child is unable to attend St. Joseph School, then he or she should definitely be enrolled in REP!

REP is for all children who do not attend St. Joseph School, preschool through eighth grade.

Freshmen in high school attend Confirmation prep at a different time.

The fee to cover textbooks and other expenses is $50 for each child, regardless of program (e.g., Con-firmation, Sunday Religious Ed, RCIC, etc.) up to a maximum of $150 per family.

Please remember that it is our DUTY as Christian parents, godparents, and grandparents, to make sure that our children are being brought up in the Catholic faith! It is a sad thing to see the faith “die out” in one’s family.

Sign up now at: http://stjoeshelby.org/rep

For more information, go to: http://stjoeshelby.org/rep

Please contact Fr. Mike or Billy should you have any questions.

Bible Study—Every Tuesday

Please join Seminarian Tyler Huber for a Tuesday Morning Bible Study! Tyler will guide us all through St. Paul’s Letters to the Corinthians. Meetings will be held weekly at 10:00am on Zoom. Zoom is very easy to use and it is FREE. Tyler will simply send out a Zoom invite link each Monday night to those folks who have signed up. Email Tyler to sign up. His email is [email protected].

Parish Library

A book can change your life! All are welcome to borrow a book from our library anytime. The library is located on the west doorway of the church. Please return the book when finished. Many thanks to Seminarian Tyler for organizing and cleaning up the library. It was a big project and it is so wonderful now!

COVID-19 Youth Trip Protocols

Dear Parents,

As you know, we are planning to continue with our youth trips this summer! Know that we’re following the guidelines set out by the CDC, the State of Indi-ana, and the Archdiocese. Safety and prudence will be our priority in all our undertakings this summer.

We will take temperatures as folks gather. No one with a fever can go. No one who has had COVID symptoms can go. No one who has been in touch with someone with or exposed to COVID can go.

Bus guidelines from the State Health Commissioner mandate assigned seats and masks on buses. We will cooperate with that.

News for St. Joseph

News for Both Parishes

Who Has Got the Better Mask?

Seminarian Tyler’s Bookshelf

This week’s book is Leisure: The Basis of Culture by Josef Pieper. Fr. Mike mentioned this book in his homily this past Saturday evening when he talked about the “workaday world.” There are so many things to take away from this book, but I will begin by saying it is a text that will challenge the way you live day to day. The environ- ment that we live in changes us, for better or for worse. Growing up in a technological world, learning the American ideal of hard work and making it on your own, and studying engineering at a modern uni-versity are just a few of the pieces that make up my worldview. All of these pieces were challenged when I read this book in seminary. So much of my aca-demic career was focused on efficiency, and I highly valued hard work in my own life as well as in the lives of my peers. I placed so much value on this work, on this efficiency. This was the mindset I took to seminary, and wow was it frustrating to switch from studying engineering to studying philosophy. Suddenly, the answer was not the important part of our homework. In fact, sometimes our professors did not have answers at all, for the questions were now what were im-portant. My engineering mind could not comprehend this insanity.

I was asked to read philosophical texts that seemed to go no where at times. I read, and I read, and I read. And I was asked to write papers on what I read. Around and around I went. I “wasted” so much time I thought. But I kept coming back to the ideas in this book.

And so I ask, what is the basis of our lives, of our culture? I still greatly value a good work ethic when I see it in a person, but were we really created to simp-ly work? Is work the great end of our lives on this planet? While it is essential to our lives as humans, there must be more to the picture.

We are a religious people who long for the infinite in our hearts, and only God can fulfill this deepest de-sire. I offer this book to help us journey towards God, to lead us to the wellspring to quench our endless thirst, and I hope that its questions can allow you to grow closer in your relationship to God.

To Grow Your Faith

Think about and read about the lives of the martyrs.

Think about and read about the lives of the missionaries.

Think about and read about the life of the saints -- especially your Confirmation saint.

Think about the life of Jesus and Mary.

Be inspired. Be bold. Be Catholic!

St. Joseph Prayer Line

If you would like your name or a loved one’s name placed on the prayer line but not published in the bulletin, please contact Loretta Eckstein at 317-392-1323.

St. Joseph Prayer Walk—July 12

Join us on Sunday, July 12th, to pray the Luminous Mysteries for Healing.

At 7:30pm, we will meet on the green space to partic-ipate in a "Walking Prayer Meditation" for the healing of our country and our world. Jesus said, "For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them." We will call upon the Light of Christ to shine brightly through these dark times--and for the healing of Spirit to be poured out in abundance. Participants may choose to either walk the meditation or pray seated before an altar to the Blessed Mother. Please note: Masks will be required at this event as well as social distancing of 6-feet.

Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time +JMJ July 12, 2020

St. Vincent News

Sr. Joan’s Corner

Dear Parishioners,

In this Sunday’s Gospel we hear the parable of a sower: the Sower, God, whom Jesus describes, is not a calculating person who sows his grain carefully only onto fertile soil. This Sower scatters seeds everywhere: on the road, in the bushes, in the rocks, into barren soil, as well as into good soil. He has, it seems, unlimited seed and so he works from a sense of abundance rather than from a sense of scarcity. God is so rich in love and mercy that God can be over-generous, non-calculating, non-discriminating and big-hearted beyond our imagination.

Jesus assures us that the measure we measure out is the measure that we ourselves will receive in return. In essence, that says the air we breathe out is the air we will re-inhale. If we breathe out petti-ness, we will breathe in pettiness; if we breathe out bitterness, then bitterness will be in the air that surrounds us; if we breathe out a sense of scarcity that makes us stingy and fearful, then calculation and fearfulness will be the air we re-inhale. But if aware of God’s abundance, we breathe out generosity and forgiveness, we will breathe in the air of generosity and forgiveness.

This week as we take time to breathe with the Lord, let us pay attention to the kind of air we are breathing and thank God for God’s generosity to us.

Outdoor Mass On Sundays

St. Vincent will continue to have 8:30am Sunday Mass outside at Mary’s statute. Remember to bring your lawn chairs, social distance and wear a mask. In Case of Rain and we have to have Mass inside and only about 50 people can safely be in church, please know that you can hear and/or see Mass in the St. Vincent’s Hall and can hear Mass in your car on the radio station 105.3. Holy Communion will be distributed at these places during communion time. You may also watch Mass livestream in your home.

Psalm — “The seed that falls on good ground will yield a fruitful harvest.” (Psalm 65) Second Reading — All creation eagerly awaits the glory of God (Romans 8:18-23). Gospel — Jesus teaches that the kingdom of heaven is like seed that has been sown on good soil (Matthew 13:1-23).

Did you know?

Each week, we are including a fact about slavery in the bulletin as a reminder of our fundamental duty to treat all as brothers and sisters in the Lord. The Catechism teaches that “enslavement of human beings, their being bought, sold and exchanged like merchandise, [is] in disregard for their personal digni-ty. It is a sin against the dignity of persons and their fundamental rights to reduce them by violence to their productive value…” (CCC 2414).

At the outbreak of the Civil War, the market value of slaves in the U.S. exceeded that of banks, factories and railroads combined. Slaves’ worth $3 billion or 48% of the total wealth of the South in 1860.
