Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Parishioners,
The students across all year groups are to be commended on their start to Term Two.
It has also been pleasing to receive many compliments from visitors to the College
who have commented favourably on the friendly and polite manner of our students. I
encourage all students to build on their solid start to the term by:
• being caring and considerate towards their teachers and peers,
• being punctual to school each day and to their classes,
• being properly prepared for class and up to date with their school commitments,
• seeking assistance from their teachers when necessary,
• wearing their correct uniform with pride,
• being positively involved in the various aspects of College life as a ‘participant’
rather than a ‘spectator’!
Each of us has a personal responsibility for making St Joseph’s College a happy and
safe place in which to learn by aspiring to look after each other and our campus.
Congratulations to Oliver Pass (5G) who will be competing in the State Cross Country
in Perth next Friday.
Tuesday’s Mothers’ Day Mass was very special. Thank you to Father Randolf, Mrs
Palfrey, Mrs Mielens and the students for their thoughtfulness and effort. Over eighty
women were in attendance and our liturgy certainly was affirming of mothers,
grandmothers and other significant women in the lives of our students. After Mass
there was a morning tea and song by the choir in the Junior School Undercover Area

ST JOSEPH’S COLLEGE NEWSLETTER
From the Principal
A Blessing for all Mothers, Grandmothers and Significant Women in our Students’ Lives
God, our Father, we ask you to bless all the mothers in our school community, together with those others who, in various ways, fulfil a mother’s role.
Give them your love that they may love those entrusted to them with the love which only they as mothers can give.
Give them your strength that they may never weary of the demanding role that is theirs, always ready to support, advise, encourage and sustain those who are so
precious to them.
Give them your warmth that they may radiate to their children the human and divine qualities of compassion, understanding, patience and kindness.
Above all, give them your joy and peace that they may always know the special place they have in your heart.
May these women who give so much to others, so unselfishly and generously, know that you are with them always.
Amen.

kindly organised by Mrs Cavanagh, Mrs Strophair, Mrs
Thomas and Mrs Findlay. Today our P&F ran the Mothers’
Day stall in the undercover area. There were some
excellent gifts available and I’m sure there will be many
spoilt mums on Sunday. Many thanks to Mrs Toni Saunders
and Mrs Cath McCracken for coordinating this event. Many
donations for the stall were received from families
throughout the school which were most appreciated.
I joined the Year Ten students on Tuesday for the Prevent Alcohol and Risk-related Trauma
in Youth (P.A.R.T.Y.) program. This is a trauma prevention and health promotion initiative
that seeks to build resilience in young people through the lived experience of a major
trauma service. With presentations by the clinical staff from the Albany Hospital that care
for trauma patients, tours through critical care areas of the hospital, a re-enactment of a
trauma accident and hands on rehabilitation activities, the students spent the day gaining
insight into the consequences of traumatic injury. The program also continually reinforced
the importance of teenagers making good choices in their lives in relation to alcohol, drugs
and driving a car. The Albany Hospital did an excellent job in the way information was
presented and the interaction of staff with the students. Thank you to Mr O’Donnell and Ms
van Hulssen for integrating this experience into the Year Ten Health program.
Last week, our Year Twelve students travelled to Walpole for their Retreat. This is an
important part of the spiritual journey of our Year Twelve students and we thank Mrs
Bennett, Mrs Tompkin, Ms van Hulssen, Mr Rutherford and Father Randolf for the time and
effort spent ensuring students found their time in Walpole challenging but an enlightening
experience.
The Year of Youth is the theme of the Catholic Church in 2018 and
this was celebrated on Wednesday at our Youth Rally; the first of its
kind outside the metropolitan area. Central to the rally was the idea
that all are made in the image and likeness of God. In daily life that
means teenagers and adults have a responsibility to
respect the integrity and dignity of each other.
St Joseph’s College was extremely fortunate to have Mr
Steve Angrisano who can only be described as a man of
many talents; no wonder he has been a presenter at six
World Youth Days! Through his music, humour and story
-telling, Steve challenged and affirmed our students. In
addition, he positively had them reflect on the presence of God. Looking around the
gymnasium, for some of our students this was the happiest experience at school for a long
time. For others their boundaries were challenged, and they rose favourably to the occasion.
Keren Conlan (Year Twelve) and Regan Anderson (Year Eleven) completed an outstanding
job as the Masters of Ceremony throughout the entire day. St Joseph’s College was also
fortunate to have: Father Tony Chiera (Vicar General), Alan Buckley, Tristan Faure, Aaron
Faure, Simone Meuzelaar and Angela Gorman (Youth Workers), Anita Finnean (Caritas) and
Deborah Robertson (Catholic Mission) working with the students. As a College we are
grateful to each of these guests for the time and effort given to our students. Thank you also
to Father Christian and Father Randolf, both of whom, were very keen for our students to
experience the Youth Rally. Staff from St Joseph’s College, our student band and leaders
were also instrumental in ensuring a successful experience for all.

Principal’s Report
Our Year Six students have been on Camp for the past three days. Thursday night was the
perfect opportunity to catch up with them and their teachers. The students were very eager
to share their experiences of archery, raft building and canoeing. A major highlight was their
success at catching a variety of fish. The evening was spent playing ‘Spotlight’ on the beach
where it soon became clear you need to be an energetic Year Six student to fully appreciate
this game. Well done to the students for their enthusiasm throughout the camp and thank
you to Mr Morcom, Mrs Palfrey, Ms Cramer and Mr Scarterfield for providing this
opportunity for our students.
The Catholic Education Commission of Western Australia has endorsed a process of
performance review for Principals. I am one of several Principals in Catholic schools to be
reviewed this year. This Principal Review Process relates only to the Principal’s Duties and
Responsibilities (as enunciated in the Principal’s Contract of Employment) and is not a
School Review or Evaluation. The aims of the Principal Review Process are:
• Accountability to the Employer
• Renewal of Contract and
• Professional Development
The process will involve the following members of the school community: Selected Staff; the
School Board; the Parents & Friends Executive; and the Parish Priest. This review will be
conducted by means of written evaluation, followed by interviews with a review panel which
will take place during Term Three.
NAPLAN testing will occur next week. The National Assessment Program in Literacy and
Numeracy is an annual national assessment for all students in Years Three, Five, Seven and
Nine. All students in these year levels will participate in tests in reading, writing, language
conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The test schedule for all
schools is as follows:
NAPLAN Test Schedule
Basically, next week, students will be come to school and complete literacy and numeracy
work like they normally do. The only difference will be the work has to be completed
quietly and on their own; no other hype needs to be associated with this event!
Applications for enrolment into St Joseph’s College for 2019 are now due. Interviews have
commenced so please submit your application now to avoid missing out on a place
particularly for Kindergarten and Year Seven. This is especially important for any families
who currently have siblings at the school now. If you know of any families interested in
applying, please encourage them to do so straight away.
Together everyone achieves more at St Joseph’s College.

National Walk to School Day
National Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is on Friday 18 May 2018. Now in
its 19th year, it is a campaign and annual event when all primary school
children, their parents and carers are encouraged to walk and commute
regularly and safely to school. It is a community event seeking to promote Road Safety,
Health, Public Transport and the Environment. Australian children are becoming less active.
One substantial contributor is the decline in walking and/or taking public transport to
school. Children who are regularly physically active are healthier, perform better
academically and less likely to be obese or overweight, which can lead to the long-term and
costly risks of heart disease and diabetes etc.. Walking regularly is the best exercise because
you can build it into your daily routine.
The Objectives of National Walk Safely to School Day are:
• To encourage parents and carers to walk to school with primary school age children.
• To promote the health benefits of walking and create regular walking habits.
• To help children develop vital road crossing skills and ensure children up to the age of 10
years hold an adult's hand when crossing the road.
• To help children develop the vital road-crossing skills they will need as they become
mature pedestrians.
• To reduce car dependency and traffic congestion.
• To reduce the level of air pollution created by motor vehicles.
• To promote the use of public transport.
Staff from St Joseph’s College will be meeting in the Spencer Park IGA carpark at 8.00am
on Friday 18 May for the short walk to school.
Parents who drive their children to school are encouraged to park their car and walk with
their children to St Joseph’s College.

Eagles Cup
The first game of the season kicked off on Tuesday 8 May in Denmark. A skilled and
strong group of students took to the field against Denmark. They fought hard the whole
game and you could not split the score in the first quarter and half. It was low scoring
with many highlights. One highlight was Oliver Pass taking on Denmark with his pace and
agility to get the ball forward quickly. Sean who was the best player, played an amazing
game at fullback where he read the ball well and saved multiple goals.
Unfortunately the score blew out in the second half and we lost by a touch more than six
goals. The support of Jim Morcom and Glen Scaterfield prior to the season starting and
on the day was greatly appreciated.
Next game is Week Four at home and hopefully we see you there.

From Head of Secondary
Year Twelve students completed their Retreat last week. I trust that students enjoyed their
time out from the rigours of their academic course and have made the most of the
challenges and opportunities that were presented to them during this time. No doubt there
will be more information in this newsletter. Thanks to Mrs Bennett, Mrs Tompkin, Ms van
Hulssen, Mr Rutherford and Father Randolf for their involvement in this event.
Over the past two weeks Year Ten students have participated in the P.A.R.T.Y (Prevent
Alcohol and Risk-related Trauma in Youth) programme this week at the Albany Health
campus. The programme is an important component of the students’ Health education
Programme as it addresses the ever increasing need to reduce death and injury in alcohol,
drug and risk–related crashes and incidents. No doubt some of our students had their “eyes
opened”. Thanks to Mr O’Donnell and Ms van Hulssen for organising this opportunity.
On Thursday, Ms van Hulssen, Mrs Hines, Mrs Loveridge, several of our parents and our
netballers travelled off to Katanning to pit their skills against other schools in the region.
Congratulations to all.
College Photos are not far away. Please ensure you check the schedule (in this newsletter)
to know when your child will have their photograph taken. Parents are reminded that
students must be in their formal College Winter Uniform. Parents are also reminded that
the schedule may be subject to last minute change.
Examinations for students in Year Nine to Twelve are almost upon us. Please see the
schedule for Year Eleven and Twelve in this Newsletter. The Year Nine and Ten schedule will
be published next week.
NAPLAN is at our door step! Students in Years Seven and Nine will participate in this
National Testing programme next week, beginning on Tuesday 15 May with Language
Conventions (Grammar, Punctuation, Spelling etc.) and Writing. Wednesday will see
students tackle Reading and Comprehension and on Thursday students will have the
opportunity to demonstrate their skill in Numeracy both with and without a calculator.
The highlight of this week was no doubt the Youth Rally held in the Gym on Wednesday.
What a fantastic event for our students. I encourage you to speak to your child/ren about
this experience and what they may have learned. No doubt Mr Browning will speak much of
this in his letter to parents in this Newsletter.
The way our bodies thirst for water, so our souls, our spirit thirst for God…

ANZAC DAY
The term has commenced, and we have all hit the ground running. Some students represented St
Joseph's College with pride during the holidays, by marching and attending services on ANZAC Day.
Thank you to all who participated. St Joseph's was well represented with the most amount of
students and staff marching in recent years. The College looked wonderful in full uniform and I
thank students and parents for bringing their children to represent the College on this day.
Thank you especially to Aidan Dallimore and Sophie Lynch, our Head Prefects, who represented the College
and were our wreath layers at the Albany Dawn Service, and Lucas Maffei, Santino Pietropaolo, Cassandra
Swarbrick our leaders from the Junior School who represented our College and lay a wreath of
remembrance for the morning service.
Retreat
Last week the Year Twelves attended their retreat in Walpole at Outward Bound. We don't want to give too much away, as it
will spoil it for all those who attend in future years, but ... everyone discovered they could most certainly achieve more
than thought possible. We survived cyclonic winds paddling up Deep River; learnt we can cook a full roast, including cake for
dessert in a camp fire; and that sometimes you just need to ask for help. I am so proud of our Year Twelves, it was a fabulous
couple of days, which have prepared each for many challenges that will be faced later in life. I would especially like to thank
Mrs Bennett for all her hard work in organising the retreat and Mr Rutherford, Ms van Hulssen and Fr Randolf for coming along
on retreat and helping with all activities. You didn't complain once - thank you!
Leavers Jackets
This week Year Twelve students were presented with their Leavers Jackets. The jackets were fully
designed by the students, and they have been waiting patiently to receive them. Presenting them at
our informal assembly at our Youth Rally on Wednesday seemed the perfect opportunity to present.
Acknowledging their efforts in conquering Retreat and hitting the half way point of their final year of
school seemed fitting.
Jackets can be worn to school each Thursday and Friday in place of the school blazer for the
remainder of the year.
Finally, there are a couple more things you will see from Pastoral Care this term, a Year Eight Team Building Afternoon and
Pancake Breakfast to name a few.
With exams in a couple of weeks, we need to remember to all look after one another, and never be afraid to ask for help.
