ASKING FOR HELP The Beatitudes praise the poor in spirit. One characteristic of those who are poor in spirit is their ability to ask for help; they know when others can provide what they lack. Today’s readings encourage us to practice poverty in spirit by asking God for what we need. What could be more natural than to ask God for good things? God is, after all, the inventor of goodness and the giver of all good things. Asking God for help puts us in conversation with God. These conversations take many forms. The reading from Genesis shows Abraham bantering with God like a skilled negotiator, while Saint Paul’s letter to the Colossians praises God for answering us even when we don’t deserve it. In Saint Luke’s Gospel, Jesus not only gives us words to use in our conversations with God (the Our Father), but also promises that God always listens to our prayers.

The problem is that our culture often confuses what we really need with what we simply want. Many people need very little. However, we usually want so much more. A good steward only asks God for what he needs.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The pilgrim experience of going by foot to Santiago de Compostella, the shrine of St. James, reached its high point this week at the feast of the Apostle, with tens of thousands of pilgrims on the road. Typically, they cover twelve to twenty miles a day through rough territory. The difficult journey and the often primitive lodging facilities are made bearable by the joy of the pilgrims, their songs and prayers. When their journey is documented properly, they receive the scallop shell, a reminder not only of James the fisherman, but also his call to fish for human beings and to baptize the nations. In the Middle Ages, those who wore this badge on their hats were granted lodging and hospitality wherever they went. Next to the palm, the sign of a Jerusalem pilgrim, the scallop shell was most highly prized. In the Middle Ages, some people so enjoyed the pilgrim road, although it was filled with discomfort and danger, that they spent most of their lives on the road. Today, some people take up the route for exercise, but are drawn gradually into the spirituality of the journey. As you make your summer travels, always fold in an element of pilgrimage: a long walk through beautiful countryside, a visit to a church, a prayer of gratitude for your journey through life’s hills and valleys.

WHY THE CHURCH ALWAYS NEEDS MONEY Every need is an unfailing sign of life and growth. Body, mind and soul have their needs and they must be met continually. A ministry that is constantly in need of funds is alive and growing and going somewhere. A dead ministry has no need and will not bother you.

RUN OF THE OX The line of storms rolled past & the Run of the Ox 5K got underway on Saturday morning. Thank you to all our participants & organizers. Look for race results on our website as soon as they are available from race organizer HMA. A shout out to our race sponsors: AWL Transport, Inc., Fall & Stebbins Automotive, Inc., Ellerhorst Russell Insurance Agency, LLC, University Dental of Garrettsville, Inc., Carlton Harley-Davidson, Sisterhood of St. Joseph, CYC - Carlton Yarnell Chipping Service, LLC, Coldwell Banker Schmidt Realty (Deborah Kruis, Agent), Oscar Brugmann Sand & Gravel, Inc., Jake's Eats. SURPLUS GOES TO CENTER OF HOPE Our leftover food products that could not be returned to suppliers is donated each year. This year these items included b e e f , p i e r o g i e s , shredded/sliced cheese, apples, spring/iceberg lettuce, shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, lemons, cantaloupe, watermelon, cucumbers, carrots, hot dog buns, Kaiser buns, hamburger buns, sausage rolls, Texas toast, sour cream, potato & macaroni salad. We also froze some beef & other items to be used for upcoming Free Community Meals. It’s wonderful to be able to reach out to those in need. 2019 TRADE BOOTHS We appreciate the folks who had booths at this year’s Fair: Cutco Cutlery, Bath Fitter, Marshall Power Equipment, Erin's Home Decor & More, Soldier Solutions LLC, Nectar of the Vine, Ohio State Waterproofing, Breakaway Excursions LLC, Universal Windows Direct, Renewal by Andersen, Backup Power Solutions, Unique Home Solutions, Great Day Home Improvements, JR Luxury Bath, Buckeye Boilers, Wicks, LLC, The Dancing Puppets, Shelf Genie, WSTB 88.9, For Rednecks By Rednecks, Surprize Novelty, St. Joseph Church Info. (+ St. Joseph Cares, Pro-Life). DID YOU KNOW? The Sisterhood of St. Joseph made orange & pink ribbons to support Loretta Brugmann in her cancer battle. Her daughters helped fill the announcing void in her absence. Radio station WSTB 88.9 was here helping with announcing when Lori Duriak & Debbie Bailey were busy doing other things. This is the Streetsboro High School radio station that students man during the week & other DJ volunteers handle on Sunday with a Sunday Oldies Jukebox format (listen for our own Guy Zumpetta, aka “Guy Z”). Thank you for your support!

SUMMER AT ST. JOSEPH’S CHURCH The PSR office closed at the end of May, but there is still summer fun to be had here at St. Joseph’s. Check the website and the bulletin for upcoming events. The PSR office reopens on August 6. Have a great summer!
