PARISH MISSION STATEMENT

We, the Catholic community of St Joseph, Placentia, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit,

center our lives on Jesus Christ. Together we grow as disciples of the Lord in faith and action.

Pastoral Letter [The Pastoral Letter will be written by a different member of our pastoral staff each week. This letter will be reflective of the readings or Gospel for that Sunday and will be written through the lens of their ministry here at our Parish. We hope you will enjoy the perspectives of the wonderful staff we have here at St. Joseph’s.]

Dear Parishioners, Thank you for welcoming me to Saint Joseph’s! I have enjoyed coming to Placentia from Palm Desert each weekend to celebrate the Mass with you—it is a real privilege for me, especially in my retirement. The clergy and the staff here have been especially helpful to me—and thanks to them, I have lots to do! I understand that our new GIFT groups—”Growing In Faith Together”—have been very successful so far in the Parish, studying the coming weekend’s Scriptures in small groups. Remember that you can still join a group—just call the Parish office for help with this. Did you know that we priests and deacons have our own kind of GIFT group, too? We meet every other week, together with Chris Boyle, our Music Director, and Mike Arias, Youth Minister, to discuss the readings and the music selections for the coming weeks. Father Miguel has started this to keep us on our toes, I think! The Gospel reading for this weekend is the Parable of the Ten Virgins, five who were wise and five who were foolish. We had a good discussion of this parable in our group meeting, and two lessons from the parable stood out for me. Both concern the wisdom we need to live our faith lives. The wise virgins knew these lessons, and the foolish did not. First: there are some things in life that can’t be borrowed! Our faith in Christ, finally, is a personal decision that only we can make. No one—no parents, nor teachers, nor spouse, nor friends, nor priests nor deacons—can make it for us. We can’t borrow their faith, we have to accept our baptis-mal vocation on our own before God. God gives us the grace, of course, and our family and friends help us for sure, but finally, living our faith is up to us to do. Second: there are some things in life that can’t be postponed! I know that many of us love to pro-crastinate, and I’m one of the worst. Joking around, I like to tell people that, while long-term plan-ning pays off in the long run, procrastination pays off right now! But seriously, we know that really important things, like our faith in Christ, cannot be postponed until “tomorrow.” To live in Christ is a daily decision we make, so that it will grow stronger, and so that we will be awake and alert when the Lord comes. Let’s be wise and watchful, not foolish and forgetful. Sincerely yours in Christ, Father Don Romito

WISDOM We consider wisdom today. The first reading from the book of Wisdom presents this precious gift as a feminine spirit, a very desirable virtue sought by many and graciously present to all who seek her. In today's Gospel, Jesus tells a parable to illustrate wisdom in a practical, measurable way. The wise will conserve their resources, use them prudently, and mark the passing of time. The foolish, on the other hand, not planning ahead, will be in the dark. Both of these readings tell us how accessible wis-dom is to all who simply and honestly seek it. Paul's words to the Thessalonians are not about wisdom, but describe one result of true wisdom: To the wise person of faith even death holds no terror. Our faith in Jesus' resurrection tells us we will all one day rise to new life in Christ. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

The Bethlehem Christian Families The Holy Land

November 18 & 19 2017, the Bethlehem Christian Families will be here to sell their hand carved

religious articles made of olive wood. The sale of these precious articles supports their Church Mission which is to maintain the roots and the existence of the Christian Families who are struggling to remain in Bethlehem. At least ninety percent of the funds raised through these sales go directly to Christians living in the Bethlehem area. The proceeds will create more work which will help them to survive and stay in the Holy Land since they have no other source of income and are dependent on the olive wood industry.

Thank You for your support and generosity.

Advent 2017 Bible Study

Advent of the Savior: The Infancy

Narratives of Jesus There’s still time to register for the next Bible Study!

Please get a registration form from the parish office.

Classes begin

Sunday, November 12th 10 am- 12 Noon

Tuesday, November 14th 7:00 PM- 9:00 PM

Wednesday, November 15th 9:30 AM- 11:30 AM

The infancy narratives have enriched the lives of believers through the centuries. These accounts

serve as overtures to the writing of the evangelists and as bridges connecting the Old and New Testa-ments. They point back to the history of Israel, and forward to the ministry of Jesus, culminating in the

cross and resurrection. This short, four-week study, perfect for your Advent reflection,

will not meet over Thanksgiving Week.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED “Passages” Grief Support has been ministering to our community for over a year. This is a unique Christ-centered

support group that is offered at St. Joseph’s Church to help those indi-viduals who are mourning the death of a loved one. This support group meets on Thursdays. The facili-tators of this group would love some helpers to join in. If you feel called to compassionately accompany

people through this season of loss in their lives, contact Kathleen Li, let’s talk about how you

might get involved! Kathleen Li [email protected]

ST. JOSEPH SCHOOL NEWS & EVENTS

The first graders at St. Joseph School are sponsoring the November Canned Food Drive. Please donate canned food items to help feed needy families. Food items will go directly to St. Vincent de Paul to help our parishioners who are in need. Let’s really make a difference this year. Our food drive will begin November 1st and run until November 18th. Place your canned goods in the donation box in the Parish Center. BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION® Join St. Joseph Catholic School in the Box Tops for Education program. This is an easy way for St. Joseph Catholic School to earn cash to fund programs and activities for our children. This type of fundraiser is easy! It’s just a piece of paper on a food container you may already have in your kitchen or in your weekly grocery cart. No amount is too small to submit. Saving those little Box Tops can add up quickly, partic-ularly when everyone participates! Please drop off box tops in the Parish office.

Thank you for your support PRESCHOOL We have a comprehensive curriculum that follows the California Preschool Learning Foun-dations and the Diocese of Orange Preschool Learning Standards. We have full-time and part-time availability. Please call the school office for more information at 714-528-1794. Tours are also available.

See what SJS has to offer.

World Day of the Poor - Sunday, November 19 Pope Francis states, "Let us love, not with words but with deeds."

"This new World Day should become a powerful appeal to our consciences as believ-ers, allowing us to grow in the conviction that sharing with the poor enables us to under-stand the deepest truth of the Gospel. The poor are not a problem; they are a resource

from which to draw as we strive to accept and practice in our lives the essence of the Gospel." (Pope Francis) This day can be a way to promote your Con-ference within your Parish; a way to remind the Pastor and Parishioners about the people in poverty around us and the Society's good works to help them. It is a good time to remind your Parish Com-munity that every day is a "Day of the Poor" with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, as Vincentians grow spiritually by putting their faith into action as they serve people in poverty.

Program Purpose: As Knights of Columbus, we have always been interested in the develop-ment of strong, vibrant families. In support of this philosophy and to create an even greater awareness of our many fine Catholic families, the Supreme Council instituted the “Family of the Month” Program in 1978. Since that time the “Family of the Month” Program has grown to be one of the Order’s most successful. St. Joseph Council 10287 has started the Program to recognize and honor some of the outstand-ing Catholic Families in our St. Joseph Parish. At the beginning of each month, the Knights of Columbus will select a Family of the Month and present to them a statue of the Holy Family to take home and display in their homes for that month. St. Joseph Council 10287 has selected Sam and Mariana Martinez along with their sons Andres and Victor and daughter Sophia, as “Family of the Month” for November 2017. This is in recognition for their many con-tributions to St. Joseph Parish. Sam and Mariana take a very active role in St. Joseph School activities such as coordinating the Mother/Son and Father/Daughter dances. Sam is the Den Leader for the Cub Scouts and as-sists with the Boy Scouts and is a member of the Knights of Columbus. Their son Andres is an Altar Server. The Martinez Family leads by example, attending Mass weekly and actively participating at the Mass.

a Mary Lou Juster - [email protected].
